- What are MixFX, and how do they differ from simply putting a plug-in on your mix bus? MixFX are powerful tools inside Studio One Professional (included in Studio One+) that apply not to the mix bus itself, but instead to all channels across your entire mix. Check this out!

Hi Joe. Old dude here. In the analog days we spent our money trying to reduce noise, distortion, wow and flutter and crosstalk.
Now in the digital age, we spend our money trying to recreate those things. I remember hearing early DAT (remember that format) mixdowns and being impressed but simultaneously confused, as to why tracks were sort of one dimensional.
Lesson: We Recordists/musicians love a wee bit of distortion. Pretty crazy... : )
Noise is life, silence is death.
This is the true magic of Studio One! The Brit Console "Superb Analog" Preset always puts a smile on my face!
Since I really figured out what MixFX does, I never mix without it! The Brit Console and Softube Tape modules are the secret sauce 😋
Now it's no longer a secret. haha the brit console is great on drums!!! I concur, Sir!
hey brother, so should I use this after a mix? or can I have it on when first load into session?
After mix.@@anthoni8337
We need updates on MixFX 😮💨👌🏻
VERY COOl!! Wow. Very cool stuff. Had no idea S1 had this built into it. Thx for sharing, Joe!
One of the best features in s1, softubes tape is amazing!!!!! Hopefully more plugin companies will make mix fx plugins in the future. great as always Joe 🤘
Yes, every time. I’m using all of them. The hard part is picking which one because so many of them sound so good.
You have an awesome voice tamber, you'd be really suited to radio etc, I used to work in radio production and your is the much preferred kind of vocal in this field 🎤🎙️
When I was in school for telecom, the instructors said “Midwest” was the preferred “accent”
Did they same something along that lines when you were in school. Wondering if the ideal articulation region changes 🤔
I actually use the porta one on full mixes for lo-fi. My go to for others is the softtube tape.
The Porta Cassette drive is so good
Yep, I use em all the time. I like the flavour they add.
This is one of my favorite features...EXCEPT ONE THING! for using amp modelers the processing is done BEFORE the amp. I wish there was an option to move where the mix engine beings on the channel. I've thrown this into the forum but no luck or response. This would literally change my whole workflow and use mix engine more
Either you freeze your track or put your amp plugin in the Event FX slot (through F4), it seems to work even without rendering the FX. I just tried with a simple tone generator and I see the harmonics from the consoles
"Hey Joe", Excellent! I did not know about this! I do know now know, look out world!! My next task is to get sep tracks from my drummers Roland digital drums into studio One.
very well done
Console strip emulations are a must to get closer to pro studio mixes. You can turn your DAW into a simulated analog console. Easy with the noise. It adds up fast.
I gotta say it again...this is the magic bullet. The "glue" everyone is after. The final touch to a finished mix. I use it every project. Edit: It's the CTC-1 Tube platform, or the retro mix FX for me. The Brit console adds a nice sheen to rock tracks, and the cassete emulator is great for a vintage feel. I did a live tracking of an 80s band last month. sent the demo without it...and finalized track with the cassette...it was night and day to them.
so should I record with it on from the beginning, or do I strictly use it after im happy with a mix?
thank you!
Jo you are the best presenter
I like using Softube Tape as MixFX.
I fell in love with exmix.
Holy crap this is nuts 🥜
Hey Joe, this is awesome. 🙏🏽 Question. How does this affect stems when exporting if you're using the bleed?
I use the Alpine Desk in every mix. I think most people try to turn the dials too far. I have everything set at around 1% and it's gold. The Alpine Desk is an emulation of an API console and the FAT channel has the Alpine 550 (API 550 emulation). I use the Alpine Desk on mix fx and have the VT1 channel strip on every track.
Hi sorry for butting in but just wondering how managed to get the extra mix fx, I have studio one + but only have ctc and console shaper available??
Used it few times but it is a CPU eater and heater even with my 32go ram, i710700k. But it is cool.
Is this a promotional video for Studio One Plus?
Appreciate it Joe
Can you show us how to do different effects sounds on our voice like hight pitch vintage alvin and the chipmonk kinda stuff .?
Can you explain the different functions, channel vs buss. Also it s use on a group buss.
What a cracking track! which song is it? one of yours?
These are now behind a subscription wall. I'd be scared to use them because my perpetual license does not include them.
Sonimus makes a nice Neve and api emulation that works like this. No subscription paywall. Fork that.
Please add a tape machine buuilt in the mix engine or just the effect inside redlght distortion. I know that softube one was a choice but I´d prefer a presonus one. Regards
I'm always stunned when people use S1, but talk about summing somewhere else.
There is a bus and channel setting/button on the mix fx. Can you email a video and explain these. As it makes a difference ons the sound a lot. Especially on the Brit console when using modern. Also, is it better to place on busses or only on the main out.
The real question is do the affect the individual channels associated with the bus? Or does it all happen at the summing point?
If I use this on my mix bus and then bounce the multitrack will I get the saturation and crosstalk on those tracks?
Or would I only hear it on the stereo mixdown?
Hi Joe, great channel, I have recently bought Studio One Artist, when I’m trying to use Mai Tai, I get all the sounds through the headphones but no signal to the track and it won’t record, can you help please
I do but it drains cpu
Hey Joe I’ve been trying to setup a template using my carbon interface, with its headphone output is there a way to do that or no.
the problem is we can't choose where they sit, meaning we don't have a pre and post mix fx. and we are limited to only one, where as it would be great to have a console and tape.
I always bounce all tracks and use the CTC in a separate mastering song file in order to reserve CPU, and that way I can use the boost feature without it clipping🔥🔥
I am working with console emulations a lot... I am wondering, is the Pre or Post gain?
Why I can't do a Key Signature change on Studio One 6 Artist I had to buy another DAW that allows me to do so why I am learning and the other DAW is a fully operational software for the same price as the Artist.
Secret stuff from the company i see joe kk
what is the different between channel mode and bus mode? is console shaper in channel mode by default? Those are more important thing!!!
Me thinks, Joe has to find that out for himself first. It may take some time. My experience is that with channel mode, just look at your channels then, the gain is up on all channels, in bus mode nothing happens to the gain of individual channels but at the "summing" point there seems to be an increase in gain. What it does to cross-talk or noise I'm not sure at all.
Does Presonus RML32 cascade with an RM32? Thanks!
Mix FX has been VERY VERY Slept on by Presonus... Imagine how many companies they could have incorporated their emulation plugins to be featured within Mix FX and especially NOW in the day where everyone wants the console sound ITB..
They missed a huge opportunity there imo.
why are so many tracks panned? is that all guitars? just asking bc i always wondered if i can have different instruments playing together but panned the same.
I spent a few minutes wondering in frustration why I couldn't get it on my listen bus when I remembered (as Joe said), it's not on the mix bus, it's on all the channels. Forehead slap. Remember, kids! Don't be dumb!
Does crosstalk bleed just to adjacent channels, or do all channels bleed onto all others?
The money I have wasted on magical plugins.... But I had the power all along...
I love MixFx ‘Alpine & Brit Console’ is the TRUTH !!!!
Slate VCC got left alone, a longtime ago…
Don’t 😴 sleep on them!
My mixes be hittin’ 😂
I bought two of the MixFX with the intent of buying the others later. Now this is not possible because of BS business practices from Presonus and Fender.
I really wish you would cover how to get a swing beat for us old school guitar players. Something in the ZZTop kinda feel. I've got toon track, but it just does not feel right. I'm sure it a button I'm missing in studio one.
EZD3 or SUP D will swing. The ride cymbal is a good way to build a groove. Try 6/8 in the time signature or similar. You can search “swing” in the library for ready made midi. Try different ones in the grid and adjust the bpm.
Manually programming note by note and bar by bar is time consuming, but may be the best way to build your arrangement.
Copy and paste is everyone’s friend.
If you are referring to ZZ Top, you might be referring to a shuffle not a swing. Old school ZZ Top incorporated the Texas Shuffle in most of their songs.
@@spkldgecko correct. I should have said shuffle
@@CurtisDart I have Superior Drummer and it is hard to get that feel to it even when I play it out on my electric set/midi. So I definitely get where you are coming from. What I have found useful is to use the groove function and tap out what I want to hear and Superior Drummer will suggest some loops. I then take those and study how they used articulations and velocity to get their sound and then try to emulate that. I don't know if that is helpful or not.
@@spkldgecko thanks. I just have easy drummer 2. But it has that groove function as well. Just doesn't seem to feel the same when I play it in Studio one. It does feel right in easy drummer
No one seems to want to tell me where exactly to place this plugin. I don't see that info in any comment and Joe didn't specify it himself.
I use this whenever I can.
But for some reason it is VERY CPU INTENSIVE for me. Even in Eco Mode. Any mitigations for this are welcome.
Do you use plug-in napping?
@@Endless_Skyway_Adventures It's always on.

i do and they are fucking great
Very cute, but this function has been there for a long time, and so far, with exception of one single Softube plugin, no one has fixed their plugins to work in this function. I have a ton of tape, channel and saturation plugins, but nothing, besides the one, is showing up in that list...
Joe...WHERE is the MixFX??? I cannot find it in the presonus effects??
Drop down arrow on top of master channel output
Whats the deal with the serial number???
i dont get it ... What does this plugin do?!
emulates analog consoles. The audio samples he showed are subtle..but when applied to a mix can really tie things together. Its funny...i always apply these after a mix, but Joe said he uses them upfront. But I would suggest trying them on a finished mix and see if you like the result.
It recreates having an analogue mixing console. On an actual console each track has its own eq, compressor, etc. But since it is analogue, none of the tracks are identical which gives it characteristics on top what the desk has by itself (all the circuits, the transformers,...) - so instead of putting say an SSL Channel or SoftTube effect as the first plugin on every track, you could use one of these MIxFX simulations to put it on all channels at once, before any of the other plugins are processed. The main purpose being to give your song an analogue feel.
@@Take-the-Ticket Thank you really much sir, on point!
S1 does not work with Logitech mice.
It sure does! I am using a Logitech mouse myself. Please make sure to install Logitech’s driver software, though. -GBY
@@presonus I have and I contacted support and they said there is a problem with those mice and their software. I can not scroll horizontally in S1 but have no problems in other DAWs.
Yes thats a problem since studio one 4 😂 delete the logitech software is the solution
I have deleted the software and it still does not work. Crazy thing is S1 support knows about this for years and has done nothing to solve it. All other DAW have no problems. Your mouse is a very important device, it's crazy that support told me they have know about this problem a while and you just need to search it and you find it's a well know problem. I canceled my Studio + sub and now do all my mixing in Reaper all because of a mouse.
I've tried the Console Shaper several times on various mixes over the years and have come to the conclusion that for me, it is a useless piece of software and I will NEVER use it on my mixes. However, some of the other options available may be fun to play with.
I concur. I really dug into these when they released the 2nd round...the Retor Mix FX. And I love how they give different flavors for whoevers mixing, or for different projects. Like the CTC-1 Custom might be better for hip hop...but the tape emulator for acoustic tracks...the options are great to have.
You must not have used tha Alpine Desk.
why would you want to add noise to audio ha ha
Telephone.
Losing control over your mix, no thanks. The whole S1+ thing have made me look for alternative daw's where "professional" actually means something, not the level 2 tier..
It's no different than HEAT in Pro Tools. Same concept and loads of professional mix engineers use it daily. It's on hundreds of songs and movie mixes every year. I'm sure those folks aren't losing control over their mixes.
@@terrygray7465 I’m sure they’re not, but there are plenty other tools to do that with. I don’t need a stinkin subscription, tnx. Maybe S1 want to be the next Pro Tools, good luck with that.
