Thanks for the video! I am new to recording (but lifetime musician) and literally working on my first recording (with Studio One). I’m at the mixing stage and struggling “where to start” with mixing. Watched a few videos last night that kind of confused me. Woke up this morning thinking … I need to Google “how do sends and busses work,” but instead looked up “mixing basics” and cam across this. This was awesome!! I know get it! And the added bonus of the VGA! Now I need to go search your videos (I subscribed) for how you put your Addictive Drums to individual tracks. Mine are all on one (also using Addictive). Hoping I can go back in time and split the exits if channel and not have to recreate them. I still suck at drums and literally draw them out in midi editor. lol Thanks man!!

Hello Mike, I like your channel and the demonstration you do. Just a reminder, Studio One do have fader for midi. You turned it off earlier in your demo. Studio One had fader way back at studio one 2. That's when I started using it. No worries just didn't want someone thinking there's no fader for midi. Keep up the good work. 😎
Thanks for another great video. That 35 minutes will save an awful lot of time figuring stuff out. One thing I miss (and haven't found yet) going from tracking to mixing in studio one is the "screen sets" which Cakewalk had. Is that available - or is there workaround?

Mike, is the Input Control checkbox that reveals the gain controls for each track serve the same purpose (and take the place of) as the Mixtool plugin that you demonstrate in your Gain Staging video? Thank you.
Hi Mike Can you explain the input gain in more detail? I have a pretty high end mic that wasn’t getting a good enough signal forcing me to turn my preamp up too high and causing lots of noise. I turned up the input gain to about 13db, turned down my preamp and it fixed the problem. It sounded fine to my ears, but does this alter the sound at all? Thanks Love your Channel !!!
I just want to clarify something as I use bis fx2, but to understand your insert FX. when you moved your delay before the amp is that the same as using the amps FX loop. It seems like it is so I just want to be clear.
Ok, I'm still struggling to get a good drum balance for my kit. So, 2 questions for now. What does VCA stand for? If I add a VCA to my template (my different drum tracks) will that balance out my kit? To say I'm frustrated is a huge understatement

Currently just have Garageband so I don't have the fader bars. Looking at getting a DAW that has them. I greatly appreciate the Intro explanation of Buss, Insert, and Sends. This is a topic I am needing more help on. Would love to hear more about that topic. Few questions--1. Why would you send the guitar to a buss when you could simply put the effects in the "Inserts" in the guitar track itself? 2. Does Guitar track with any inserts and the Buss mix with any inserts both go to the Master mix? If so, does that mean the Master Mix is getting 2 signals from the same instrument in a sense? Thanks for any help
1: He's managing the clean signal on the audio track and the wet on the buss. This lets him do different delays or volume changes. Let's say you want clean and dirty, make a pre-fader buss send and then you have both to tweak individually. There's a lot of creative reasons to use them, but functionally it's similar to duplicating the track and adding ampire. 2: Yes. The clean signal from the channel goes to the master. It also sends to the Buss which goes to the master. Same instrument, but one is dirty and one clean, so two 'different' instruments in that sense.
Hi Mike, I have learned a lot from your tutorials, and it's fun at the same time. Thanks for that! I have a question you might know the answer to. I am fairly new to Studio One. As a former Sonar Platinum user I liked how they had a master bus, and a separate output bus or busses. Whenever I used reference tracks I routed them straight to the outputs, so they weren't affected by plugins from the master bus. In Studio One the master and outputs are the same (main). My solution is to make a new master bus, to preserve the main bus solely as outputs. This works of course, but I wonder is there an official Studio One way to do that? Have you already made a video about this issue that I might have overlooked? By the way I am not sure this is the right route to ask you a question.
Hi Mike, a little of topic mate but as you explain things so well I will ask, I feel a little silly asking this but here goes. When recording real instruments such as guitar, bass and lead vocal, the choice to record in stereo or mono is as simple as how many microphones you have available so usually mono for bass and guitar unless doing a stereo acoustic guitar track for example, whats the go with virtual instruments like kontact that gives you a choice of either stereo or mono outputs for virtual instruments as I only knew how to set up stereo outputs in kontact that how I recorded them but I learnt how to set up mono tracks in kontact from one of your videos and now other than bass and electric guitar I am uncertain which outputs would be best to choose for piano and strings drums etc, as many of us record with virtual instruments a quick video on this wold be great, take drums for example I presume most output would be suited to mono except the overheads. In your setting up multiple outputs in Kontact video you chose to make some strings parts stereo and some mono, do you mind discussing your methodology to these choices. Hi, thanks for the question. You assumption with drums is correct. With others, it depends how they have been sampled. If you try in stereo, but find when looking at the meters, that L and R are identical, then it's likely a mono signal. We just have to be aware of our assumptions they. For example, a guitar may be mono when dry, but stereo processing may have been added after - for example a stereo delay.

Like so many others, I have not yet received my Spark Amp. As a Utube personally, you can probably get one for free to review with Cakewalk. I am interested to see if I can plug it directly into my Audio Interface or do I have to plug it in directly into my Computer via the Spark's only USB connection. Have you worked with a Spark Amp yet?
I would like to record an album using studio one. The songs will be entirely acoustic, so acoustic guitars, drums, etc. Is there a (simple) way to create multiple songs with all the same channel settings without having to configurate the inputs, effects, etc. individually for each and every song?
Love these videos but I'm struggling to find out how to record one track, while listening to a previous track, without the previous track re recording over what I'm doing.
I hope this finds you or anyone that can help me figure this out. if you have access to any of the dozens of requests to PreSonus that I've submitted you can see what I'm talking about. now I'm going to repeat the request here. when I finish a song I save it by clicking SAVE then move on. what happens is somehow all the audio gets removed, the tracks (stems) are still there but the content is gone. what I have found is somehow the audio (not MIDI) gets moved to the windows media player and/or "Groove Music" and there is no way to put the tracks back. I know how insane this sounds but I have loads of screenshots of what I see when I revisit a song. when I open the song there is a box with all the audio tracks listed telling me that Studio One can't find the tracks. a few weeks ago I submitted a song to you and you said you liked it. well, imagine my frustration and anger when yesterday I wanted to have a bass player work on it only to find the audio is gone. last week I had a tech from Obedia spend 45 minutes remotely run my computer only for him to tell me he can't figure it out. I'm at the end of my tether. I'm at the point where I don't want to write and record anything. the only solution I can think of is to buy a new computer which I can't do and who knows if the problem will follow me. I really hope you see this or if there is anyone out there that has any ideas or even knows what I'm talking about please, please contact me. joeypinter55@yahoo.com

I am new to recording and this is my first daw as well. trying to get a handle on inserts and sends concept which im failing miserably, you said that you were putting the guitar thru a delay and a ampire effect thru the insert, then you created a buss through the sends path and did the same set up. what i cant understand is why the insert isnt distorting the signal and it is a clean sound. did you turn off the path thru the insert to option for the buss route instead. what i understood you say was that you were gonna balance the clean sound with the effects sound and i didnt understand why you created the insert path if you were not gonna use the insert, but use the buss instead. forgive the inability of the understanding as learning isnt easy for me because im over 60 and things dont come as easy as they used to...
Yes, when he's using Ampire on the buss he has the insert turned off. The signal flow is gain knob > Inserts > Fader > Sends (Sends default to post-fader. This can be changed.) He created the buss path to show multiple options as an example, not to use both in practicality. Hope that helps.
What confuses me most about mixing is busses and sends. I'm a newbie so please pardon my ignorance. If I could understand it I wouldn't be posting. Anyway, it seems to me that the only reason to use a buss or send or fx channel is to lighten cpu load. Again, to me you're just adding more channels with more faders, and therefore, adding more confusion. You have the basic track...why not just add your goodies onto that track and be done with it. Another issue and my most concerning is: if you have a main track, but also a buss and send and fx channels associated with that one track...what is the master fader listening to? All of them? Hence...so much added confusion. Please help me to understand this. It seems to me the master fader is being swamped by several different things. How do you make the master fader listen to just what you want it to hear? Shouldn't just one signal be hinting the master fader? If so...again, why so many branches off the tree when you can just feed the one main signal to the master fader? Thank you.
ok, so i have looked at the video for a fifth time and still trying to figure out the relationship between the inserts and sends function. seems as though the prefade and post fade is having a big effect on the relationship. what i think is happening is that the sends always gets the dry signal no matter what the inserts are doing. im thinking that the control over the mix of the processed signal and the clean signal is the advantage, only i havent quite got it figured out yet. i also think that there is no substitute for just using it and seeing how it affects the final output. proof in the pudding sort of stuff. difference between engineering and real time stuff. things dont actually work no matter how detailed the engineering drawing are. the real time world usually works differently.
i recently purchased a Presonus Studio 24 interface (from Sweetwater) and it came with Studio One Artist. Saved around 100 bucks and got some free plugins as well. Made a big difference over Prime.

Where that gian control is concerned, you just closed the stable door as I just had to add the mixtool to do my gain staging.

I saw in the video that you had Ampire XT Classics. How can I get that. I like the old classic sounds and Version 6 Pro doesnt have them.

I know how insane this sounds but I have loads of screenshots of what I see when I revisit a song. when I open the song there is a box with all the audio tracks listed telling me that Studio One can't find the tracks. a few weeks ago I submitted a song to you and you said you liked it. well, imagine my frustration and anger when yesterday I wanted to have a bass player work on it only to find the audio is gone. last week I had a tech from Obedia spend 45 minutes remotely run my computer only for him to tell me he can't figure it out. I'm at the end of my tether. I'm at the point where I don't want to write and record anything. the only solution I can think of is to buy a new computer which I can't do and who knows if the problem will follow me. I really hope you see this or if there is anyone out there that has any ideas or even knows what I'm talking about please, please contact me. joeypinter55@yahoo.com
Hey. Are all of your tracks in the song folder that you're mixing? If not sometimes it can happen that waves get lost. I've experienced it more than once...

Yes, I'm thinking I may knock it down for videos. They are 4K monitors, but I actually use them in 2K as they are quick unusable otherwise!

I am new to recording and this is my first daw as well. trying to get a handle on inserts and sends concept which im failing miserably, you said that you were putting the guitar thru a delay and a ampire effect thru the insert, then you created a buss through the sends path and did the same set up. what i cant understand is why the insert isnt distorting the signal and it is a clean sound. did you turn off the path thru the insert to option for the buss route instead. what i understood you say was that you were gonna balance the clean sound with the effects sound and i didnt understand why you created the insert path if you were not gonna use the insert, but use the buss instead. forgive the inability of the understanding as learning isnt easy for me because im over 60 and things dont come as easy as they used to...
Yes, when he's using Ampire on the buss he has the insert turned off. The signal flow is gain knob > Inserts > Fader > Sends (Sends default to post-fader. This can be changed.)
He created the buss path to show multiple options as an example, not to use both in practicality. Hope that helps.
What confuses me most about mixing is busses and sends. I'm a newbie so please pardon my ignorance. If I could understand it I wouldn't be posting.
Anyway, it seems to me that the only reason to use a buss or send or fx channel is to lighten cpu load. Again, to me you're just adding more channels with more faders, and therefore, adding more confusion.
You have the basic track...why not just add your goodies onto that track and be done with it.
Another issue and my most concerning is: if you have a main track, but also a buss and send and fx channels associated with that one track...what is the master fader listening to? All of them? Hence...so much added confusion.
Please help me to understand this. It seems to me the master fader is being swamped by several different things. How do you make the master fader listen to just what you want it to hear? Shouldn't just one signal be hinting the master fader? If so...again, why so many branches off the tree when you can just feed the one main signal to the master fader?

ok, so i have looked at the video for a fifth time and still trying to figure out the relationship between the inserts and sends function. seems as though the prefade and post fade is having a big effect on the relationship. what i think is happening is that the sends always gets the dry signal no matter what the inserts are doing. im thinking that the control over the mix of the processed signal and the clean signal is the advantage, only i havent quite got it figured out yet. i also think that there is no substitute for just using it and seeing how it affects the final output. proof in the pudding sort of stuff. difference between engineering and real time stuff. things dont actually work no matter how detailed the engineering drawing are. the real time world usually works differently.
The sends will always send AFTER the inserts are applied. Gain > Inserts > Fader > Sends is the default path, as sends default to post-fader.
by the way, is studio one free?
There is Studio One prime, a free version of Studio One but it is very limited. If you want a full version of studio one, you will have to pay
i recently purchased a Presonus Studio 24 interface (from Sweetwater) and it came with Studio One Artist. Saved around 100 bucks and got some free plugins as well. Made a big difference over Prime.
