  • Part of The Salvation Army's mission is to meet the needs of individuals of all backgrounds, without discrimination. Some needs are more unique than others and require special attention.
Dalton was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at a young age, but when he arrived at the Bakersfield Corps he was welcomed like every other kid.
Watch today's video to see how the church body embraced him and made him feel at home, and be inspired to reach out and make others feel welcome at your own church.

Dalton is a very kind person. Every time I walk into the church he is always there to give me a hug and say hi. He will always bring a smile to your face. ❤️

While I'm not Salvation Army (I'm Anglican and was diagnosed with Aspergers when it was a separate diagnosis from ASD), this is great to see, there should be more churches (including my own) that follow this temple / congregations lead.

This you tube has really made me cry. I am an older woman recently diagnosed with ASD. I have had a horrible time in churches and they have criticised my behaviour. I too am good at music and singing but when it comes to trying to reach out to other believers, I still feel they don't understand. It's so exhausting and frustrating after a life of exclusion. He is fortunate to have you. My family wrote me off years ago so loneliness has been a constant issue in my life. I don't like or trust "normal" people any more.

I too have the hardest time in any group ( not just church) but God soothes my soul from expectations.
Love you, be blessed in the Lord

@@RestfullyRenewed Thank you so much for your lovely, kind comment. Yes, you are right that expectations can lead to dire disappointment. It was because I was diagnosed so late that I earnestly believed for many years that if I could just "pull myself together", I too could enjoy a more regular life and fit in. Forgiving and even loving oneself can be difficult when countless goals are swimming in the opposite direction and you find yourself on the "duffers" pile. Then again, we need to continually remind ourselves we are fearfully and wonderfully made for His purposes. We are I believe without boasting in myself the vessels for extraordinary use mentioned in scripture. We have LOADS to offer and we are examples of our Father Creator's loving sense of humour, (think of the ostrich, the seahorse and other fascinating examples of His Creation!) Be blessed🙏👍🌈

@@cristinaroe2166 thank you. You're right God can use any one of his created for his glory. I have been narrating books of the Bible on my channel, reading slowly for better processing, with autistic people in mind and I'm excited about how he is leading me. Thank you for the chat. Blessings x

🤍🤍🤍🥺 I'm christian and autistic...Jesus Christ is ALL YOU NEED, I guarantee you!
Religious people would judge Christ back then and it's still going today!
      But "you're wonderfully made"✨
PS: I'm good at music and singing too! God has clearly a purpose for each autistic person!

My thing is this I learned that churches are no more than a tax exempt business that cares only about the dough coming in. People treated me like shit at the church and there’s no wonder why people are leaving religion in huge numbers.

It be good to see national church bodies fund study and research into residential "rehabs" for dysfunctional late-in-life diagnosees like myself.
I noticed that the main difference between myself and those on the spectrum who'd become successful in life at their comfortable level, or were on their way to it, was that they ALL had informed, generally professional parents or guardians instilling a routine in a way that worked best. Which, if ADHD is also present, is the best environment to be using those meds well.
Routine, and a healthy mentorship, sensitive to interests or passions which benefit the service user and wider community, but careful not to impose political/cultural bias upon the Bible teaching in a residential setting, ideally rurally away from over stimulation, based loosely upon, say, the Teen challenge template, but with some of the addiction-centred restrictions lifted (playing musical instruments, practicing your skills in whichever way is possible, or finding your niche within the house or grounds work, or supporting others.
    Dealing with impulses, overloads, others.
Sound solid Bible teaching from the simple through to whatever level, with secular or spiritual vocational mentorship for either going home with, or onto further training to continue serving God and God's people. Be the people we'd WANT to spend eternity with.
Right now, too many folk like myself are dysfunctional and the system is wasting us and all of our money by not helping us not be dysfunctional. We have so much to offer, including supporting other ASD folk who've been later-in-life diagnosed.
Right now I'm just living in a dysfunctional world of isolated anxiety with no depth.

Please don't call yourself dysfunctional. You deserve love, acceptance and understanding. As for me, I refuse to accept the label of "the lost generation". It is NEVER too late. Any ablist rhetoric against us is unfounded. Jesus died for us too, maybe even especially. You are WAY too self critical. Love yourself and your talents. Yes, I would love to change deep rooted and biggotted mind sets in the church which have caused so many issues. We don't need rehab. Love and understanding is what we need. We're not the wrong ones to be medicated out of existence. We may be angry, hurt, resentful, depressed and all that but I do believe that if we persevere and cry out to Jesus for healing, He will hear. Believe me. I understand what a long and painful Road it's been.
