It is scary realistic, because it's a mother who in some ways puts a lot of effort and money into their child, but at the same time is dismissive, unkind, cruel, physically abusive, emotionally abusive ect. it's so complicated. because a kid in that situation will often feel guilt and like the owe their parent so much, but at the same time they've treated them in a way no one would think it was OK for an abusive partner to treat them...
For real. The mom just wanted her to succeed for her own personal benefit. She acts kinda like my mom, ever since i told my mom about what i wanted to be in the future she always brings up stuff and tries forcing me to do stuff that im not up for yet and always brings up my future career and guilt trips me over it. This movie really gave an actual realistic portrayal of a very abusive mom and i like it cause it feels so real.
she was a narcissist mom, she saw Tonya as an extension of herself. She was frustrated in life and wanted Tonya to succeed not for her daughters happiness but for her own ego.

My mom was very abusive to me as a kid. Then at 25 she told me she never remembered hitting me. So slapped her hard 1 time across the face and said, "you'll remember that I bet." The look she gave me was priceless. Like your kid will eventually hit you back one day. We have a great relationship now because she knows I'd fuck her up if she tried anything now.
I love that I wish I could do that but if I hit my mom like she deserves she would beat me unconscious. My mom never threw a knife at me but she did hit me a couple times growing up and when I was a teenager she would always dig at my acne on my back and arms with her long nails even though I told her over and over again to stop. It hurt so much. Oh once when I was 5 maybe she held me down to pop a zit and wouldn’t let me go even though I was crying hysterically hanging off the side of the couch.

You also see Mo'Nique break down and make excuses for herself whereas Tonya's mom knew she was a monster and just didn't care. Both Tonya and Precious were poor, had no education, were sexually abused, beaten, and left on their own as teens thanks to their moms. Tonya, though, finds the strength to move on, while Precious still has to work on her self- confidence for the rough road ahead of her. Both films offer a nice contrast of how 2 girls can be born in a dysfunctional world, and have very different reactions.

Some people have hard lives because their relationships break down, they yearn to go back to the time when they didn't have such problems and responsibilites but they cant because of the child, so they end up associating their problems with the child, rather than realizing that it was their actions that made their situation.
