Leave no stone unearthed, you sound like my grandfather, there's been no other man like him, I say it like this, leave no stone unturned, nice vid and worke Mike, wish u was in my little town, we need one of you here badly,
I've been doing heating and cooling for almost ten years in western PA and encountered my first steam boiler ever last week and it was oil fired. I can handle the fuel oil part but your videos I watched over the past few years made easy work of the diagnostic and maintenance of the steam boiler part. I did a flush, pressuretrol and pigtail clean out, sight glass replacement and LWCO probe scraping and descaling and it has been running perfectly since thanks to your informative videos. Plus a hefty quote for steam pipe replacement. Thank you very much!
Nice. Back in the dark ages, pre internet and cells. Had a call at an apartment building for no heat. Maintenance guy met me and watched while I diagnosed. Bad LWCO. Maintenance guy says he has one and can change out. Billed out my time and left. 3 weeks later read about it in the paper. He wired out the lwco. By the time the fire department got there the boiler room and steel door was just over 600 degrees. Took 3 days to cool down.
Leave No Stone Unturned --- Great job of troubleshooting! It can be a real pain when a machine goes to working and you have no idea what caused it. Intermittent problems are the worst!
Nice job troubleshooting, Mikey. I'm glad you waited for the complete cycle. A quick and 'delicate' test of that aquastat is to check for voltage across it's terminals. If voltage present, the switch is open. I like to use this method whenever there's easy and quick access to terminals.
I had the same issue couple years ago but with aquastat relay, it was overheating the system and the relief valve was popping off. If I would wait like you did here it would save me a call back and my face in front of the customer. Never rush to leave, lesson learned.
That was a brain teaser ❤ Great job! Question tho? At 15:30? hooking up the common for the low water cut off. I would have used a piggyback spade connector.. I mean it will work either way. I just like to have it on spade connector so if I have to replace it, it’s just kind of a plug and play deal. That’s the only thing I do differently than you do but regardless, we can put 100 guys in the same room and all 100 of us will do something a little bit differently, but I love the piggy back spade connectors.🤷🏻♂️
Open Circuit = Broken Wire or Open in Device. The thermal portion of the high limit switch was probably bad. If it was a short in the wiring or high limit device the gas valve would have ignited the burners and remained on.
I'm always trying to be honest! Remember if you live in the Long Island New York City metropolitan area and need a plumber for heating repair give us a call at 516-348-6300
Great video Mikey! Lots of details. One question for you. Does it matter if the LWCO is on the "from system"water pipe. Or if it is on the "to system" water pipe?
No OBD port to run an all-component diagnostic? Reminds me of the days before cars had such a port. Amazing when tradesmen ask clients questions, in order to help figure out what changed from when things worked to when they did not... I get the same kind of responses.
Mikey , Im also a HVAC tech and just pass along a tip perhaps, when it comes to stranded wire around a screw it can be more frustrating than looking for sasquatch!! Use a quick crimp connector, so easy and quick, without the frustration!!! In many mini split connections jammed , crimp connector is your friend 😉🖖🤙
I would charge this dough bag double!! Especially since you asked him if anything was done, he said No! Then it's like oh yeah I turned off them 3 valves, replaced thermostat, after troubleshooting for 10 min!! These types of people drive me nuts!! Just be honest, it would make it easier, and say you money! No BS Charge him at least double
You’re right! DIYing your boiler is like trying to perform surgery on yourself-just don’t do it! Leave it to the pros like Mike, who actually know which end of the wrench to use!
It seems that it was the Aqua stat after that moving around it could have been tripped and didn't close back, but unplugging the wires, could have "fixed" the contacts to close again. 👍🤠
Not ever living anywhere where boilers are used, I am curious if they require periodic dusting or cleaning and are they for heating the house or water or both?
Had to clear a p-trap of grease one time, asked the tenant not to pour grease down the drain. Said they didn't do it. Asked them if it was working fine the week prior, they said it was draining fine then.............the look on their face after they said it was priceless 😆
@@PipeDoctor They should at least have left a putz sticker on the machine, you you know they were there. I still like the no license-no permit basement remodeler who capped off the heat ! That was funny.
As an electrician easily the conversation I have when I first walk in is 75% of my trouble shooting. Hold back information then it just goes to billable time.
these kind of customers are the reason why I always assume customers are holding back or just plain lying to me. "has anyone serviced your equipment lately?" "no.. well... yeah i closed those valves... etc"
Was it a short or was it the damper motor not finding the right position , it seem to me after you forced the damper and got that odd feedback sound is when the damper cycled and then it lit .. you messed with the shaft on damper it 1/2 cycled to the home position you then went right to the stat pulled the wire plugged it back in and you look right at the damper as its powered back up & it fully cycled to the open position and lit you then said right off it was a short ... I can only assume that if that damper is not in the right place it won't light , mind you i'm not a HVAC tech but i am a appliance tech . I was the same way as to not throwing parts at the customer & would just let them know to keep a eye on it and let me know but that damper would be suspect number one in my mind .
That's why my old boss would say spend time check it twice three times no call backs back in the seventies you would have your coffee and a Marlboro cigarette😅 and watch the boiler work properly
I am lazy, I add cold water into the system when I want to see it cycle. My Dads boiler would never reach the target high limit, if it was set to 180 it would only hit 140 and short cycle.
The Characters you Meet and the Stories they tell yo7 are Priceless. It’s Obvious they’re Clueless if they Think you’re going to Believe 20% of what they Tell you🤪👎
I always wonder why you don't bring your tool bag when you walk up to the house. Yes, I know occasionally all you have to do is turn on the emergency switch or press the reset button. But those are few, and the vast majority of the time you make the trek back to the van for the tools when you could have them with you at first look. Not a criticism, you do it your way if you like, it just seems like a waste of four or five minutes to me.
As a young tech I think we are expected to bring in our tools everytime but as an old tech if we can ;get by with just a multi-meter, our brains and an 8-1 to save our knees and back a little; it's worth it in the long run. Check out Anti-DIY HVAC: He brings in an 8-1, a voltmeter and a pair of kleins and that's how he solves like 80 percent of his calls. Imagine how much priceless strain he saves his knees and backs in attics and crawlspaces lol
@@joziahcorbett2399Mike is right when l did service calls a T 100 fluke meter and a 5 in 1 screwdriver in a small tool pouch with small refrigeration gauges which l did a lot of refrigeration calls. I laughed at new tech with a tool box or tool pouch that’s pack with tool that weighs over 50 pounds going up ladder and across roof . For me l had different tool pouch’s set up in my service van one that did compressor change out , one for installation, plumbing .
