While Spartans earned the name of Demon.... the ODST still earned the name of Imp. So they did put fear into the Covenant, which is quite impressive for unaugmented humans without power armor.

Everyone forgets Halsey was forced into doing the Spartan-II Program... ONI asked her why their Super Soldier program failed and she explained that it failed due to using adults... ONI then used her investigation to come up with the Spartan-II Program and when she initially refused they told her their next option was Ackerson, whom Halsey straight up demanded to know why they would consider 'that butcher' for the project. So she took on the Spartan-II Program to try and ensure that some of the candidates would survive instead of the guaranteed dead if Ackerson was incharge. The book The Fall of Reach coveres it all.

I've always felt that the ODSTs should be given Semi-Powered Infiltration armour as standard-issue equipment, and given more clandestine operations than Spartans. That way, the ODSTs get to maintain a valid and useful operational niche. If nothing is done to either lightly re-role or beef up the ODSTs, then I feel as though they will either be (further) relegated down the special operations 'food chain' by the expansion of the SPARTAN-IV programme, or just simply absorbed into the SPARTAN-IV programme entirely.

    • @ironclamp5325
      @ironclamp5325 5 месяцев назад +3

I personally see the ODST program being integrated into the Spartan IV program as one of the more probable possibilities. Becoming one of the Spartan Special duties. Like being a Sniper or Sapper.
And as far as the SPI armor I think that it’s probably cost reasons. SPI armor is EXPENSIVE and considering while ODSTs are capable of commando style operations the ST in their name establishes their main role: Shocktroopers. UNSC high command probably views it as not being cost effective enough. Though I can see if a certain unit of ODSTs show that they are especially good at commando style ops they MIGHT get issued some SPI armor. But that’s still a big MIGHT. I see it only really happening when the UNSC find a way to streamline, mass produce and make more cost effective version of it. Like what’s honestly happened with a lot of forms of military equipment in our real world.

    • @giselleluzern7336
      @giselleluzern7336 5 месяцев назад

Personally I feel that the ODSTs already fill a perfectly acceptable niche. They're the upper limit of what a Human soldier can be without expensive augmentations and expensive power armour and fill the role of a Tier 2 SOF like the 75th Ranger Regiment as compared with the Spartans which fill the Tier 1 role (DEVGRU, Delta Force, that kind of thing). And there are a hell of a lot more ODSTs than there ever will be Spartans simply because of that cost element. It is possible that some of the more niche elements within the ODST structure itself may end up subsumed by the SPARTAN-IV program but ultimately the role of the ODST as a (comparatively) low-cost, easily deployable mid-tier Special Operations Force is not inherently threatened by the expansion of the SPARTAN program.

would be interesting to see an ODST that speak with a spartan 4 and learn that she could have been one but chose to go helljumper simply because she read the contract and saw that retirement is impossible or improbable. Followed by the argument that if they do manage to retire, got a house and a family, ONI would most-likely get involved and monitor everything they would do, might even kidnap their children and replace them with defective clones, to try and make better Spartans. And that would be if the Spartans are still able to procreate. So yeah she chose the one job that was high risk but with the bonus of being a regular citizen after service.

Also the way to fold them into the spartan IV’s is first you have to be able to become an ODST and must serve at least one tour more like 2-3 as an ODST, then you can become a Spartan 4, if you’re good enough, and if you were and ODST before a Spartan 4, mainly for the older/first gen of Spartan 4’s then you retain your ODST designation, just with Spartan IV added on the end. So they are still ODST’s at the end of the day. And somewhere between the true gods of war in this universe, Spartan II’s and the lesser/expendable, cheap, mentally unstable 3’s, used up like paper towels after you spilled something and the more valuable. Already proven as soldiers and marines, or space navy/oni types that were the first Spartan 4’s now you’re almost as good as Spartan II, that they dislike for various reasons, but still an ODST. And yes Spartan 4’s as a whole are inferior in pure capability, experience, and savagery brought by age of the S-2’s and a life time of war, while being old enough to be some of their parents. The ODST’s and S-4’s that is. Just a handful of S-2’s could and did turn the tide of entire planetary campaigns, through direct action. Not to mention save earth outright from the first massive planned attack that woulda steam rolled earth and humanity and ensured we woulda been hunted down and exterminated. And one thing people forget, the longer you are augmented, the better you become as you fine tune everything about how you work. Not just knowledge and experience, but biologically, you become a bit stronger. A bit faster and quicker, a bit tougher, then add in all the experience, and knowledge, they get even better on top of that. Then upgraded armor at the end, which their body and augmented bodies and knowledge and all that make even better, leverage even more. If any sieving S-2 or especially John wasn’t concerned with killing a S-4 that opposed them in single combat…they’d steam roll them 99.9% of the time, without a doubt, if you take all the facts of what they have done, know and learned, and how much better they are, the very best elites in their top of line armor, we’re just as fast, stronger, had even greater range of movement than any human, S-2’s beat them in hand to hand, even outnumbered, they beat brutes in hand to hand, and even hunters, who have more, effective armor than most UNSC ships and a weapon that can in one hit, the fusion gun, or a shield that can even several wound, disable, and lead to the death of a S-2 in single hit, or stomp that will kill them, they also work in pairs always and yes single S-2's have killed lore than hunter pair. solo and lived to talk about it, in close quarters, with maybe one kill from longer range/ambush. theres only a few S-4's that could ever even dream of accomplishing that. let alone actually pull it off, not cause they wouldn't try, they certainly would, they are just not flat out good enough, nor do they have the experience to do so, on the regular, as this is what S-2's did time and again, battle after battle. planet after planet. boarded ship after boarded ship. ODST's who seen them. learned what they could do and lived through it are exceedingly rare, as they all, almost died, not to mention all but a fraction of a percentage could even hope of survive becoming an S-2. not shit talking, they are completely different levels, just like only a tiny fraction of a percentage of S-4's could ever hope to live through becoming an S-2, literally none of the S-3's could live through that. and by that i mean the augmentations, the most powerful, oldest and the ones that scale over time, that makes them essentially immortal, at least for a while, and by that. i mean from natural causes, they dint have diseases, have highly accelerated healing, are even stronger, faster and quicker than earlier on. its funny cause S-2's are what actual USMC is, in idea and how viewed, reputation, being both loved and hated, at times lots of publicity, and always performing. getting the mission done, no matter how impossible. take WWII for example. silly imp jap admiral said it take a million men a hundred years to take an island, took us 72 hours, with uhh, a magnitude of ten less…another earlier island, a junior japanese officer seen our landing craft approaching and wrote that, i quote "The gods of death have arrived" those are but two examples of real life and history. let alone future space, kidnapped kid war. not even in sci fi has an enemy once called humans or marines the gods of death, so given all that, ODSTS would be even kore terrifying as Marines make up most of them by number, and ODST's make up most S-4's, and S-2's are even better than them, head and shoulders above them, that is scary, should be absolutely terrifying. that USMC earned the title the gods of death by our enemies, S-2's only demon, lol.

Except your forgetting the part where you surviving 2 to 3 tours in the ODSTs is that your not becoming a Spartan by just surviving. You have to be the best of the best. Because the Spartan Branch only offers the chance to go through selection to the top 1% of each ODST class. IE the Spartan Branch only takes the equal to the top 1% of the Kasrkin or Catachan Devils. Basically the Sly Marbo's , Bharath Obeysekera , Alwix Vradenrik , and Death Korps Grenadiers get the opportunity to go to selection for the Spartan Branch. They are chosen based on their achievements and skills as soldiers in other branches of service.
This selection process is going to suck . As in the Trainers are a mix of fully augmented Spartan IIIs with some Spartan IIs being involved in advanced training. Going to sniper school means passing a course built by Linda-058 of Blue Team. And at the same time you get ONI Spooks hand selected for the task. Who enjoy doing their job. To include interrogation training aka torture. And the trainees go through the first part of training exactly as the older generations did . Completely Unaugmented and yes the Spartans use live rounds in training occasionally. Kind of like the baptism by fire in basic training Except the people shooting at you are fully augmented super humans putting rounds inches from your head.
So it would be a terrifying and painful. Followed by Augmentations followed by more advanced combat training. Spartan IVs have to earn their armor. And they aren't a Spartan until they earn it.

@@John2r1 oh definitely and the S-II’s are even better than them, even more experienced against humans and the covenant, not saying they are bad, but they are hands down worse than any S-II, who when the 3’s and such tried sneaking up, with optical camo, they knew and immediately man handled them, lol. The fight with John and what’s his name, woulda been over, fast, even without John killing him, he’s not as good. Or experienced, or well trained. They are different levels, is my point, and don’t actually warrant a comparison. 4’s are more stable, maybe 3’s with better armor, that’s it, from just regular humans, with a weakened augmentation process that can accept anyone who is militarily fit, not the top few percent at best, of hundreds of billions of humans. With the literal best genetics. To ever exist. Thats like trying to compare a dreadnought from the oldest chapter masters, to some constrict guards man with a flashlight. Not saying they don’t have their uses. But replace John with some weak ass S-4 or S-3, and humanity lost, at reach, they wouldn’t reach the covenant breaking up into civil war. And no, no S-4 or S-3 was actually at reach, on not the S-2’s existed at that time. Unlike what the game tries to say, that lore was established long before even the S-3’s existed. Kurt hadn’t been MIA yet, so he couldn’t have set up the school for the S-3’s where he trained them for ONI…which definitely means the S-4’s couldn’t exist yet either…so yeah, the lore and time line don’t make sense, they couldn’t be where they were yet, to do the things they tried to retcon in, which is impossible die to their own lore. It was only S-2’s st reach, and all but blue team as the main ones holding the planet, against the largest assembled covenant invasion fleet, they did a pretty damn good job. As only 93 candidates lived and were functional at the point of reach when they got their armor with shields. The first ones humanity made, besides the ancient humans anyways. And we choose to govern shields to the S-2’s over our massive fleet of warships, whose armor cost more than a destroyer, per Spartan. John was still two or more generations behind in tech. While still slaughtering the covenant and S-3’s and 4’s were dropping like flies, as he walked through the battlefield leaving g one dead aliens behind, or annihilated entire fleets, bigger than the reach invasion fleet. By blowing up their main station and fleet headquarters. Completely different level. He’s killed hundreds of billions to trillions of enemy combatants by his direct actions and leadership, choices he made and was a part of also. All the S-3’s and 4’s put together are like we maybe got a hundred million or so, didn’t defend earth directly against the covenant, the fractured remnants or the flood, nor did we kill tens of billions at the lowest, at once by blowing up the unyielding hierophant and the massive fleet with her.

@@Plastikdoom Um actually The Spartan 3s are comparable to Spartan IIs . As kind of a middle ground between the 2s and 4s . To be exact a Spartan IV named Edward Buck the former ODST. Had this to say about the 4s augmentations compared to the older generations.
"We're not exactly like those artificial gods from the earlier generations. More like demigods. And I'll be damned if that usually isn't good enough."
He goes on to explain .. "When I say walking gods, I mean the Spartan-IIs. Like the old Greek Titans in the way that they live among us but are literally head and shoulders better in every way. And they’re just about as hard to kill. The fact we lost so many of them during the Covenant War tells you something about how horrific that conflict was. The soldiers in the SPARTAN-III program were more like your standard gods of myth and legend, the Titans' kids. Hermes and Apollo and Aphrodite and such. If the Spartan-IIs are more powerful than you can imagine, Spartan-IIIs are probably just inside your limits. The Spartan-IVs-my new designation-are like demigods then, the offspring of the real gods. Think Hercules. We can pass for regular people most of the time-something folks would generally have a hard time mistaking the earlier generations for-but inside, we're far more than that."
      - Spartan Edward Buck, comparing the augmentations of the Spartan-IVs to the previous Spartan generations.
Also the majority of Noble Team were Spartan IIIs . Jorge-052 was the only Spartan II on the team.
The Spartan III project spanned from 2531 to 2552 aka the end of the war. July 24 to August 30, 2552 - NOBLE Team participates in the Fall of Reach. All but Jun-A266 are confirmed KIA.
Concurrently, SPARTAN-IIIs are deployed to Casbah City on Tribute to assist civilian evacuation operations.
So yeah there were Spartan IIIs on Reach. A handful of them. Also when it comes to kill count Spartan B312's background is highly classified due to his involvement with ONI's operations.
A statement about his career by everyone's favorite war criminal tells you everything you need to know about his career.
"Noble Six. The team's most recent addition ... my, my. So much black ink ... Six has made entire militia groups disappear. Curious ... "hyper-lethal". There's only one other Spartan with that rating."
      - Dr. Catherine Halsey.
Yeah there is at least one Spartan III with a kill count that at least nearly matches the Chief. And Spartan-B312 had get his kills based on skill not luck. Over the course of B312's career, the Spartan gained a reputation as an efficient lone-wolf assassin, having single-handedly broken terrorist organizations and made entire rebel groups disappear. The Spartan was also a test pilot in a top-secret UNSC project, the Sabre Program, which resulted in the development of the FSS-1000 Sabre space fighter.
Meaning Spartan - B312 and Chief have a similarly feared reputation among the enemies of the UNSC. These two aren't the boogyman they are the kind of guys you send to kill the boogyman. Of course that means there were two hyper lethal Spartans . One from each of the god like classes.
As to Chief vs Locke well Chief wasn't actually trying And he was gimped by the armor he was wearing because in case you didn't notice he was wearing MJOLNIR Gen 2 armor which is designed to scale to Spartan 2 wearing gen 1 armor. So it wasn't really enhancing his ability unlike his former armor or his new Gen 3 armor. And he still whooped that boy's ass. Spartan IIIs weren't generally given the best gear . The cheapest part of the Spartan 3 Program was the Semi Powered Infiltration armor. Oh and it was a Gamma Company Spartan III that went hand to hand with Kelly -087 and held their own for a short period of time before being knocked down with a punch to the chest plate denting the plate. This cheap armor has been phased out by 2558 with the Spartan 3s adopting MJOLNIR because well it's just better.
Now Spartan 3s from Gamma Company are the Spartans that just get pissed when you shoot them. And have a minor side effect of the possibility of uncontrollable rage requiring bipolar medication and a drug to counter the negative effects of said bipolar medication. So mentally unstable Superhuman with all the same augmentation advantages as a Spartan II but done mostly chemically. Now wearing MJOLNIR power armor as post war MJOLNIR GEN2 and MJOLNIR GEN3 are standard-issue for all Spartans serving in the Spartan branch, including Spartan IIIs. Most of which are from Gamma Company.

@@John2r1 oh I know all that .the 3’s were pure luck as they were unstable and not suitable for mass adoption. I don’t disagree with what buck said overall. Even he knows, so him winning against chief. Either chief completely threw the fight. Or he pitied him, reality, would be over I. Hundreds of seconds, before even high as an S-4 realized Chief moved. Without killing or crippling buck. And no, no they weren’t et the nettle of reach, literally only S-2’s and the very remanants of S-1’s existed, aka Johnson. Get over it, sure they are “good” but they ain’t shit, never have been. Never will be S-2’s stomp all over them, all day long. Every day. Which is my point. They are at best a value added strategy and far, far weaker. A-2’s can and do manhandle them. In heartbeat. So fart they can’t even counter them. Even when the 3’s and 4’s have gay ass and weak optical camo, and the “same training and armor” or “better” 2-3 generations ahead, S-2’s dominate and kill by the billions. They win or “lose” whole campaigns so costly it cripple the covenant that could wipe out earth with a single strike. And noble six is bs. He never existed as S-3 or 4, literally only S-2’s existed then, retcon is dumb, not real and doesn’t make sense. That was all a money a grab. No spartannin lore delivered or guarded Cortana, except S-117, John. Halsey gave John directly, Cortana, an Aai copy of herself. When she was younger. Theninot human to survive making an AI. So get out of here with your lies and balsphemy, not “real” for the setting, doesn’t follow lore, just another modern fan boy, spreading lies, not the actual, amazing story of what it is. Noble six, who never existed, didn’t kill shit, cause never existed, lol. And there still was zero S-3’s to 4’s at reach. Cause they didn’t exist yet. Try reading a book, that isn’t retconend bs, and doesn’t exist, countering their own lore. Yeah, doesn’t exist, so try again. Not “real” for the setting. Never was, sadly for you, was all S-2’s up to then and after. So deal with it. Or else I’ll tell you your stupid and a liar, lien I do know. So get over it, not real in the story, never was, the reach game was all bs, never happened. No matter your power fantasy a decent game, but not lore. The ODST are not going anywhere. While it is true that the Spartan IVs are better than the ODST and regularly scalp their recruits, this is something that can be said of every other branch's special forces programs, a fact that is NOT appreciated by any of the other branches of the UEG military and especially because the Spartans are now, canonically, considered their own separate branch of the UEG/UNSC Military and are commanded by a Spartan II washout (he washed out in the augmentation process but there is nothing wrong with his brain). They also do NOT operate under SOCOM, this is something none of the other branches like especially ONI. It was a move done in universe so that "Spartans would be commanded only by other Spartans" and to "avoid political entanglements" which was stupid as shit. The META reason, though, was because 343 and Microsoft wanted to move the image of Spartans away from being soldiers to super heroes.

What Keys saw in Halsey, I’ll never know, and I understand why their daughter took his name. Hell, Halsey would get along with Fabius. Primarch program at least had the excuse that humanity was genuinely up shit creed with no paddle.

She used to be more complex at least. Being convinced that the Spartan program was a grim necessity for humanity's survival, and she attempted to minimize the pain caused the program in her own way. Still guilty of horrible things, but not without remorse or reasons for the audience to understand why.
After Halo 4's Campaign is really where she went into mad scientist with zero regard for laws, ethics, morals, etc.

8:12 I dont get the whole Halesy hate, she was the mind behind the project but ultimately it was the UEG/UNSC/ONI who bank rolled it and gave it a green light. She wasn't the one running around kidnapping children, those where ONI agents.
Theres multiple times when Halesy is regretful and as remorse for the kidnapping of children, she is the one who stopped oni from making the spartan 2s mindless emotionless robots (oni essentially wanted to lobotomize the spartans) Halesy also didn't want to lie to them just incase they ever found out about their past. (I highly recommend anyone to ready the fall of reach by Eric Nylund it explains all of this)
It doesn't really matter if you disagree with the methods or not Halesy really did indirectly save the human race, not only because of the spartan program and mjolnir program but also cortana and a depper understanding of forerunner technology (alot of her work is the reason the Infinity even exists in the state its in halo 4 onwards)
If anything shes a morally gray character with more nuisance then people give her.

I mean, there’s also ghost of onyx. Halsey gets hate because despite their being people above her: she’s still the direct hand in it, she’s still the person making the project work, she’s still the person who handpicked every subject by meeting them in person and knowing half of them wouldn’t survive. The mind pushes the body, just because the heart pumps blood doesn’t mean it makes the arm move.

The ODSTs were amazing soldiers... Sadly the UNSCs naval doctrine was created by a child with a crayon considering how moronic it was before the Human-Covenant war started. Seriously none of their ships are desicated to anything, they're all "does everything" ships... Which well just think of how much space the MAC cannon takes up in a ship, then add in missiles, more traditional cannons, and hanger space for star fighters... Oh and the ship's engines, and storage for tanks and the ODSTs drop pods...
Yeah all the UNSC ships have more stuff than they have space for. They somewhat fixed this problem by the time Reach came around but lets face it their doctrine was moronic, no one... No one, thought of "hey these MAC cannons are awesome maybe we have a ship dedicated to firing a bunch of those in rapid sequence so we can gun down a fleet in a instant!"
And because their Doctrine they are forced to operate under is so horrifically stupid, the ODSTs rank vastly lower than they should in terms of overall force power.

Part of the reason why a fleet of multi tools would be more appealing than having more dedicated designs is that there was no peer adversary, so being able to spread out forces more while always having valid equipment when responding to a situation would make a decent amount of sense. Heck, with the scariest ships around being UNSC, the need for dedicated MAC platforms wasn't all that present.
Mind you, they could still have done better with designs specifically created for countering insurrection operations, but if anything, the UNSC was overequipped before the Covenant showed up. More in need of words than guns.

@@bthsr7113 which I certainly give them. You tend to make bad decisions when you're the sole super power without even regional powers to challenge you, the Roman Empire comes to mind letting Praetorian Guards persist for as long as they did.
But (minus the hero ships) the design philosophy bit the UNSC in the ass, especially when the lives of Marines or ODSTs were on the line, especially since (outside videogame logic) their ships had no means to support a land operation in any meaningful way in terms of logistics, even when the ships weren't engaged in life or death battles.

God i hate the Spartan 4s their whole shtick is to be "Super" """""""soldiers"""""" with the military awareness and skill of a 10 year old, unless a cutscene calls for them to play Avengers and skateboard on a Elite's face down a mountain because elites are of course nothing more than petty weak unskilled chaff troops magically for no reason.
I didn't really like them in Halo 4's take of the Spartan 4s but then by Halo 5s first cutscene i knew the 4s were nothing but hot air running off of sheer plot armor.

I will have to say, I love the concept of ODSTs, but the game is by far the worst in the series, the game is so bad at telling you what to do, I end up just wandering around the end of the level trying to figure out what to do just to end up skipping the level. The first time I played ODST, I walked around the first level for half an hour before having to look up what to do just to find out that an NPC hadn't spawned where it was supposed to so I had to restart the level.
