October was a bit all over the place. I'm going to say Nine Sailed Star by Glynn Stewart, for the familiar-but-unusual world building, generally likable characters, and casual queer representation. The runner-up was Shadow of the Lantern Bearer, for the interesting world building again.
Hugs! The world is a hard place with hard things going on all over, it's easy to be overwhelmed by it all. Sometimes the only way that I get out of bed in the morning is because of books and watching videos like yours. Hang in there.
Glad you’ve mentioned Palestine. I’ve been so dissatisfied in the silence of many of my favorite creators. Oh! And I agree, I hated “Notes on an Execution”.
Already two fav booktubers of mine talk about what happened in Palestine. And acknowledge it's a genocide. Thank you so much for talking about it although yes, you are not obligated to talk about it. Still, I appreciate you. And yes, do not push yourself when doing it could hurt you. I took my time to read Mornings in Jenin too because it's so close to heart especially with what's going on.
Thank you for mentioning what's happening in Palestine. I agree that it kinda feels silly and pointless to go about our lives normally while a group of people is being murdered
You put into words how I’ve felt this month, feeling like things are pointless in light of world events. It feels wrong to get lost in books (or games for that matter) when there is so much going on and feeling so hopeless. It was a perfect month to fall into cozy so Piranesi and Prayer for the Crown Shy are my favorites of the month I think. To Be Taught If Fortunate is another great one that I loved. I’m currently slowly meandering through Legends and Lattes and more of NK Jemisin’s work as well.
Thank you Emily for acknowledging the horrid gen○cide happening in Palest!ne ❤❤ It has been jarring and disheartening even, witnessing this nightmare and mourning yet seeing youtube going on as per usual.
Emily I am crying... as someone who has Palestinian friends and family in Palestine and here where I live..... Thank you for actually calling it a genoci*e and not a war :). Thank you for being the best. Sending love and hugs your way and the kittens
Emily thank you for mentioning the genocide and your feelings about it. I’m so disheartened and disappointed when I see people putting out their usual content as if nothing is happening. It’s honestly hard to function these days.
I really wanted to address it in this video since I was talking about it in the vlogs and they never went up. It feels weird to do our daily tasks while this is going on :/
It's okay about the vlog, I think a lot of us completely understand and are in a similar boat. Trying to keep up with world news right now, while also trying to juggle normal stuff just feels...strange, silly, false. I really appreciate you mentioning it. 💚
I haven’t read Middlemarch, but I struggled with George Eliot’s Adam Bede when I was in university. Her main character was so morally uptight and perfect (obnoxiously so) that I spent the whole book rooting for the morally grey characters.
I am happy to announce that I have followed Emily's wise advice and have started Children of Time. I am loving it. I live for it now. Emily has ruined my life for a few days.
I usually dont comment on stuff but i had to i really can not thank you enough for calling things as they are ❤❤❤ and i hope u fell better and vlog soon
October was an ok month, my favorite was definitely The Thursday Murder Club. From the ones you've read, I'm very interested in Finna, The Factory and As Long As The Lemon Tree Grows! I hope you're doing well despite everything going on🍁
honestly i saw from the start you were a little bit down :( so sad about everything thats happening in Palestine, hope the books can cheer us up a little in a moment like this
There was definitely a moment in As Long as the Lemon Tree Grows that had me in tears! Sad you didn't love Notes on an Execution. I have been meaning to pick it up!
I'm so glad to finally see someone feel underwhelmed by Notes on an Execution. So many people rave about it being the best book ever and it was so *fine* for me. The writing is good, but I didn't feel much beyond that.
I know I'm two months late, but with everything that has been happening the past few months, I haven't been able to go on with my life doing what I usually do, including watching booktube videos. All this to say that it makes me so relieved that one of my favorite book-influencers had it in herself to recognize a genocide when she saw one and to publicly express it. It's basic humanity, but at these times it feels like rare currency. I'm grateful that I don't have to cut off an other "friend" from my life. I'm binge watching everything I missed now
I read two books in October that were 5 stars for me and had older female protagonists (since I know you're also looking for that) - one was An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine, the other was The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington. Quite different except for the older ladies that were doin' it for themselves. And I had a third 5-star, The Stromness Dinner by Peter Benson, which was so wholesome and lovely and I do *not* get book crushes, but I think I might've had one on Ed. And if you're someone who likes good food descriptions, it had that too. Highly recommend all of those.
Notes on an Execution was also underwhelming for me… I listened to it as an audiobook. I saw several booktubers rave about it as a 5 star book and it just didn’t work for me either. 3 stars. Totally understand about your comments regarding Palestine. It feels rough to live life as comfortably as we do when so many others struggle. Take care ❤ we can be patient for the videos ❤
Thank you for speaking up about Palestine ❤ Everyone’s been feeling heavy at heart and it’s challenging to not feel guilty resuming your daily living activities. Anyways, hope you and the cats have been doing okay!
You have no idea how happy and relieved that you mentioned “Palestine” ❤ It’s so heart wrenching to see all of the innocent people die, and specially the children 😢
I read 13 (two still on the go) A Phoenix First Must Burn is a sff short story collection writen by black women, the title is an Octavia E Butler quote!
My bf and I are Buddy reading all of Brandon Sanderson and we are on Words of Radiance! However, the best book I read was Dear Jacob by Patty Wetterling. For those who don’t know, her son Jacob was kidnapped and murdered in rural central MN (40 min from my house) in 1989. The murderer finally confessed and led police to his remains in 2016. The book is the story of Patty’s journey through grief and it was so beautifully written. I cried at least 4 times before I got half way through. It is tragic but the ending does give you hope, which is something Patty and her family never lost throughout those 27 years.
I was similar to you this month, been emotionally slumped and also read only okay books (mostly). I loved the new Percy Jackson book (Chalice of the Gods)! I also loved City of Stairs and wish I'd read it much sooner hahaha.
I'm definitely curious to see what you think about Lone Women. I finished it at the beginning of this month & I really wanted to love it... but I don't know... the more I think about it the more I want to round it down to a three stars.
Strangely enough, because I didn't grow up as a fan, Britney's - The Woman in Me - was my favourite book in October. Thanks for the wrap-up, take care of yourself and take it easy.
I read seven books in October (which is incredibly huge for me as I am quite slow), and among them I really loved The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and Vicious by V.E. Schwab. first books of her that I’ve read and I instantly bought Vengeful and A darker shade of magic! I also liked The Quiet Tenant by Clémence Michallon. looking forward to reading more cosy fantasy this month!
Best was a little life oh how it wrecked me, I did just finish starling house (started it on Halloween) and it was so good. Did you hear about kitty karr? Was also really good it felt like an evelyn Hugo/vanishing half mash up.
October was a mixed bag for me (I was so busy and my library books were expiring left and right, lol), but I really enjoyed the Clocktaur War duology by .T Kingfisher! There were some pacing issues, but it really feels like two parts of one whole book, and all the vibes were fun like the movie D&D: Honor Among Thieves. And then for nonfiction, it took me almost 3 weeks to listen to the audio because the chapters were long and the content was enraging, but Dark Money by Jane Mayer was a deep look at the wealthy assholes currently destroying American democracy.
The Clocktaur War books are on my list. Glad to hear they are a good read! Especially after lots of mentions of the war in the Paladin series (which I do recommend if you haven’t checked it out).
I DNF'd Notes on an Execution for the very reason there was a focus on the murderer. That was not what I signed up for --everyone was saying it was about the women, I think they lied to me. I don't think you're going to like Miracles of the Namiya General Store, I'm calling it now.
I have sampled a few, Jimmy Carter's Palestine: Peace not Apartheid (interesting for historical perspective, but not really what I was looking for). Killing a King about Rabin...but so dry. I have ordered The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977 by Gershom Gorenberg and The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine by Ilan Pappe. I have looked at lists of recommendations with too many to mention. While I appreciate an academic books, I need a bit more narrative to keep me going. It's okay. I guess it can be difficult youtube culture and all but you are in no way obliged to appease us. Do stuff as you want to do it and you dont have to explain yourself to anyone. Lots of love❤
I really love that you addressed the genocide happening to palestinians. I too have been feeling like my life is just so silly and insignificant compared to the suffering of our brothers and sisters currently suffering and dying on occupied land while the west is as always taking the side of the coloniser… everything is just so meaningless and dreary. I feel you
Thank you for calling it a genocide. Thank you for speaking up. I’m losing respect for a lot of people I love to watch and listen to and I was scared I’d lose you too.
The Burmese government is committing genocide on its own people as well. It’s really sad how the media cherry picks what to report. I am incredibly angry at what’s happening in Palestine but also equally sad for all the other world issues that are not being reported.
Respect for mentioning Palestine in your video. I admit i'm a little surprised by the amount of silence from booktubers that read about similar situations in fiction but have nothing to say when it happens irl, when they also have no problem speaking up about other injustices and minority oppression ect...
There are probably lots of reasons for it but my guess would be a mix of: not wanting to deal with the backlash, not knowing enough about the topic (we don't hear much about it here for example, but it doesn't take long to educated yourself), not wanting to lose sponsorships (I know I turned down a collab with Disney + to support the boycott and I'm planning on keeping an eye out on who is promoting it in mid-December), etc. Too many people try and stay neutral but in the face of oppression, neutrality only serves the oppressor.
@@BookswithEmilyFox thank you for taking the time to explain i understand the situation a little more, which is why i respect you even more for speaking up and joining the boycott when it's against your personal interest, much love 🙏
What’s the best book you’ve read in October?

The great pumpkin queen ❤
