- It's been about 100 days into the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte.
Since he took power, the Philippine president has overseen the killing of more than 3,500 people in his war on drugs, offended world leaders and strained relations with the US.
In an exclusive first interview since he was sworn in, we talk to Duterte about his controversial war on drugs and foreign policy - including deteriorating relations with the United States and potentially warming relations with China.
"We have three million drug addicts, and it's growing. So if we do not interdict this problem, the next generation will be having a serious problem ... You destroy my country, I'll kill you. And it's a legitimate thing. If you destroy our young children, I will kill you. That is a very correct statement. There is nothing wrong in trying to preserve the interest of the next generation."
But Duterte admits that children and innocent people have also been killed in the bloody crackdown, and promises to investigate these extrajudicial killings, but he also says calls them "collateral damage".
When asked about the contested South China Sea, Duterte says:
"We will not give up anything there; it's an entitlement ... You can only negotiate to prevent a war ... They invited me for talks, and I will go."

We live in Davao City and we are always safe because of this person. As a dabawenyo we are proud that he became the president of the Philippines.

I'm not gonna lie... With all the bad press about Duterte, I was starting to really dislike him. But after hearing his thoughts and looking at things from his point of view, I understand him now 100%.
He is easily misunderstood because he is not the typical scripted politician. He speaks his mind. He's a no bullsh*t, straight to the point and honest man.
His "collateral damage" statement was soooo on point. I've never heard anyone say that about the West, and it's so true. He took the words out of everyone's mouth who's afraid to counter the West.
Hearing him speak, you can sense his intelligence, logic and wit.
He's a breath of fresh air... Specially for the Philippines.

Six years weren’t enough for him to clear out decades of problems piled up by the previous administrations but he has already done so much. It’s saddening that his term is coming to an end but looking at the overwhelming support towards the most possible successors, BBM-Sarah Duterte, gives me hope. Revisited after 5years.. Man this President deserves more than a nobel prize. Ive neve been interested in our country politics till he became a President. He is a genuine person. Very compassionate, patriot and boy he meant every word he says, straight forward no BS no politics.. His passion for our country send shockwaves of patriotism and struck every Filipinos heart . What hes achieved and done was ovverly remarkable that even all the previous Presidents combined has never done, not even a quarter of it.. I'm a Caucasian male from the U.S. My first visit in Davao City in 2004 while he was Mayor, I never got ripped off, and felt totally fine walking anywhere at night! Now 20 years later, the city has had major development, and well known as the best city in the Philippines! Just the facts.........👍

Drug problem was severe in the Philippines before Duterte came in. I am not even from Manila but everyday as I go to work, I feel at risk being robbed as it was like happening every hour everyday. I was dragged by a robber on motorcycle once but the worst almost happened to me when I was poisoned by a fume while inside the taxi, could have been raped as it also happens a lot. Thank God I was always vigilant. The crimes were a result how rampant and violent drug addiction is and it was getting worse everyday before he came in like there was no hope. Duterte is really our answered prayer. Nobody compares to him. May God bless our President Duterte.❤
It's sad that the United Nations are concerns about the killings in my country and yet they are not doing anything about the war in Syria who clearly need an immediate help. Our President is fighting drugs to save the next generation. Most of the casualties are the DRUG ADDICTS and PUSHERS who refused to surrender, they have given a chance to surrender and yet they chose to fight. We, as a Filipino citizen are supporting him so back off! We want change, and it's coming!

I am a Canadian Married to a Filipina. It's about time to see the Philippines acquire a president who really cares and who is going to do something for the people rather than his own good. The past number of president should be tried for corruption. He is putting himself in harms way for the country of the Philippines. I am a Canadian that understands the issue in the Philippines, i'm getting exhausted of media going into these interviews not knowing the facts and the intrinsic nature of the issues facing the Philippines. Media: learn your facts before you take on an interview. Because you look uneducated otherwise.
