I guess, because this is evoking ghosts, this is Halloween music. Love it. But, also! Man 'o' man! The second movement of the Cello Concerto ("Blues") has lots of mysterious passages, too. Much more mysterious than bluesy really. Thank you, John, I love it! AND! Can Yo-Yo be BELIEVED? How does anyone get that good? I rarely use the word astonishing, but it's time...the cadenzas are astonishing.
Technically, they already did a ghost movie together- Always (1989). But of course, that was more of a romance film than a supernatural one. Look up “Always: Title Theme” if you haven’t heard it before.
As the story goes: in 1990, Maestro Leonard Bernstein was visiting Highwood, an historic property on the Tanglewood grounds. There, he claims to have seen an apparition, a ghost of some kind. So, in celebration of what would have been Bernstein's 100th birthday in 2018, John Williams wrote the piece you hear based on that encounter with "Highwood's Ghost".
Wow! I love mysterious music and the name John Williams did not seem to be the name of a composer of mysterious music. Some sections of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich, but mostly I had to settle for sci-fi soundtracks and Halloween music. But now, John Williams, who always does deliver great music no matter what is called for, has come up with a definitive mystery-note informed entire piece! Kudos! And, of course, as always, Yo-Yo Ma is 137% perfect. Always that extra bit of excellence...
My favorite Williams concert piece, alongside the Bassoon concerto.

absolutely astounding
Spielberg should make a ghost movie with Williams! This is so evocative of the supernatural!

Reference to Elegy at 13:40?
What is the genesis of this piece? Is that a home that belongs to the Maestro?
