It takes a lot of confidence in your own star power to not get around to opening the box in a video about its contents until the six-minute mark. Brava.
Years ago I bought a $79. Tele-style guitar online, so I could learn setups and upgrades. I bonded with that lil guitar and love it as much as the expensive ones. Thanks Landon. 🎸
I once grew Paulownia Trees at my old farm. They grow very, very fast. In 8 years I had a 30’ tree. But the roots protrude from the ground. Paulownia is basically like Bamboo - branches are hollow on the inside like bamboo. Great smelling flowers in the spring. Strange tree though.
For mods: Take the pickups out, take off the cover and tape, and carefully squirt superglue into the copper coils. This will "pot" them on the cheap. You can also use thinner epoxy/resins, or wax to do this, but superglue is quick/cheap. Set-up the action, check the nut slots, all the usual other stuff. I bet it comes across like a different beast altogether.
I think you should definitely NOT mod that guitar. Paulownia wood is the lightest, softest wood ever. I'll bet there's a bad neck dive. And no screw is gonna stay tight in that crappy wood. But hey, knock yourself out if you want. I'm sure it will be an interesting, entertaining video.
Judging from the things we see coming out of China… they don’t strike me as at ALL interested in things like patents or copyrights. Things like the tsunami waves of ‘Chibsons’ that have been coming into the states stand as solid evidence of that. I wish though that if they’re going to copy names & products like Fender, Gibson, etc. without any legal worries at all, they’d concentrate on making better/closer ‘copies’ of the real thing. Now that I’ve typed that out… it dawns on me that this would only make the problem worse. 🤦♂️🤣
@@gearmeister I don’t think anyone is suggesting such a thing. I have to imagine that the difficulty of doing so is pretty much the reason that Chinese companies do it.
I bought one as a gift for a buddy 2 years back - routed and added a humbucker bridge and put in a p90 sized humbucker (then an esquire pickguard). He loves it and uses it every day, and now he's famous while I salt away in the wilds of New Brunswick...
It would be great that you upgrade the shit out of this guitar and do an A/B comparison too see if this is worth modding it ! Great video as always Landon and its so true what you say about the actual society we live.
Many of the original telecasters were made from pine and were surprisingly light. Recently I tested some new ‘made in the USA’ telecasters and they weighed a tonne (10lbs plus). When I commented on this to an old timer who lived next door to the Fender factory back in the day he said “And many of the Gibsons were really light back then as well.” I couldn’t believe that as every Les Paul I’ve ever touched has been a boat anchor (including my own). Next time he visited he brought his early-days LP with him (must be worth a fortune) and it was 2lbs lighter than my 2010 model.
Cheap guitars are usually good except for the tuners. Good machine heads cost $140-200 Canadian. I have an excellent Harley Benton, but it needs locking tuners.. which is worth doing for playability, but you’ll never get it back when you sell. And I’ve sold every guitar I’ve had except my first.
Just got my first “Amazon cheap guitar” a Westbrook Racer and I have to say fit and finish are on par with guitars 3 times as much money. There are some incredibly nice guitars out there right now for very low cost.
I liked the blonde bodies on the LYXPRO so much I bought two of them and changed all the hardware and put Allparts necks on them and now I got two super light Tele's that play and sound as good or better than most Fender USA custom shops. I bought Fender USA & MIM bodies in the past and they were all boat anchors. There's no need for an electric guitar to weigh 8 to 10lbs. The neck pockets are about 1/8" wider than Fender but not a problem getting them to work. Yes, the stock neck is pretty decent. Amazing what they can make now for little money.
Paulownia doesnt even feel like real wood its so light. Had a strat unfinished body made from that once, felt more like hardened cardboard or styrofoam than anything else. Returned it.
Bought a used Squier bullet for like 70 bucks that didn’t sound as bad as this thing to begin with. You can upgrade and modify the hell out of anything and make it sound and feel like something twice as expensive. Just need a solid foundation and you have to decide if it’s worth it.
I'm interesting in seeing how this performs with new tuners, pickups, and strings...if the neck and action can be setup well, it might be a fun project...
It's kinda pretty, and I kinda like a light guitar... But dear God it sounded horrible. I felt bad for your poor Princeton having to make those noises. I would be interested in knowing just what it takes to get playable. Clearly tuners and a FULL setup. Probably recut or replace the nut, possibly shim the neck just for "playable" condition. Only then would we have any idea if the PUP's and controls are salvagable. It's like Amazon is selling guitar tech training material. So, while I find the setup and mod videos quite enjoyable to watch, I almost feel it's not worth the effort unless you simply need the content. The time and materials are going to cost way more than the guitar did.
I have a LyxPro. Seafoam Green. I put aftermarket pickups on it. New tuners, swapped out the tone cap. Oh, and put brass saddles on it. I also dressed the frets. Plays great! Mine was $139. I play it regularly.
If the saddles are slammed for height, a flat shim in the neck pocket for full size cures the higher action & saddle/string break angle that won't ever happen if the fretboard is slammed to the pickguard. Just have to adjust the pickup heights for the shim thickness. Basically a set up that most every guitar needs to be finished off to preference. The sub $ 100 guitars are basically assembled for being "in the cheap seats of the ball park". As long as the pickups aren't microphonic, it's going to eventually play in quite well. Might take a set of strings.
I want to see the add new pickups , tuners , adjust the neck , dress the frets , add new bridge plate with modern 6 saddle set up... perhaps add new full sized pots and switch.. or whatever you think it needs update please.
It said the guitar is made of paulownia wood. Paulownia is very light weight. Paulownia is prized in Japan. The best wood for making their beautiful, lacquered boxes.
I wonder what the radius of the neck pickup is? and if it is even close to the fretboard radius, I like the grain on the body but the colour is a bit too dark for my liking. That high action might be an indication of big problems with either the neck or the pocket, hopefully its a neck shim that they messed up!
I like that you showed the full experience of unboxing and tuning a cheap guitar. It’s a good thing for people to see. Too bad they come with such high action, because If you bought this as your first guitar you wouldn’t be able to learn very easily on this.
Agreed, but they come with the Allen wrenches to adjust that and RUclips has a zillion videos on basic set up. If the nut action is high all you have to do for a temporary fix is tune it a whole step down and capo it at fret #2 and then re- tune. Learning basic guitar set up is just like owning a bike. It is essential to know how to adjust your brakes an air up your tires. Folks too lazy to do that need some therapy.
Depends, if one is learning Cowboy Chords & staying within the first 5-7 frets pf the neck, how bad can the action really be as an issue that dropping the saddles & pickup heights is a learning instrument ? I get it though, if one is learning guitar, they'll assume that the build & set up on a new & out of the box guitar was done for them. Even a beginner is going to have to learn how to tune it for Standard E.
Hey I bought one of these from lynx. Looked great but sounded like crap out of the box did not sound good .a lot of buzz. My neck and action was perfect. I put new Ernie ball strings and it sounded sweet. No buzz. Blew me away for $100. I always restring my new guitars. Hooked to a fender front man and it was night and day. Kept in tune with the original tuners. Just new strings
Palawania wood is super light, like BALSA wood. I have a strat body I never used made of this. They used to make rickshaws and carriages out of this because of its light weight. I have no idea if it has good sonic qualities but other guitar manufacturers would be all over it if it sounded good.
A good Fender or Gibson beats any copy any day of the week. I think boycotting fake Chibsons and Chelecaster guitars is the way to tell scammers to eff off and make their own designs...eh. Ibanez makes their own designs and they are great.
I'd like to see this in a quick demo after it is set up with a more normal action.Btw, that action reminded me of a Raven Bass I bought in '72 or '73. It was like trying to play on a cutting steel trampoline. Boingy! An upgrade video is definitely in order so we know if the bones-body and neck- are good.
Mod it Landon, see what you can do with just tuners and pickup upgrade. And of course a proper setup. That will be interesting for sure. Theoretically, if you drop some pickups & tuners in it, and do a setup - you would have something like an upgraded Squier Classic Vibe Tele, for less than the sticker price of a CV Tele.
Harley Benton Do the best cheap Telecasters but only advantage to that LyX guitar is it's light so would be great for live shows as you won't get worn out using it.
absolutely, do the improvements for us to see. Also would be nice to see a step by step set up, for those of us who have never done that before. By the way, your price on the photo states $89.00. You said out loud, $149, for what its worth.
I tried this one. Wanted to like it - like, so bad. Unfortunately it holds the distinction of possibly being the worst guitar I've ever played. Could have been just the one I got. Clear-coated mouse-dropping? Check. I could go on. I won't.

3 ply pickup may refer to the thickness, rather than a number of layers. At times "Chinglish" is difficult to understand. I think Tele and Strat may be out of copyright, but a lot of them say "Strat-style" or "Tele-styel" I don't like the cheap flange type strap buttons. I just bought a cheap "other brand" short bass and it has Glarry on the headstock
It could use a quick setup but overall, it doesn't seem too horrible. I wonder what it will sound like if it gets intonated and the bridge set up and the nut filed I want to get one of these, or the Glarry mustang looking guitar (which is around 59$ usd in America right now) and use it to learn how to solder and wire new pickups
Mod it, good sir. MOD IT! 🤣 I spent the lockdown(s) learning to work on guitars, and it’s turned into a really enjoyable hobby. I’d like to see what you can do with this & maybe get a few ideas along the way. So yes - mod it. 👍🏼 I can’t help but wonder if maybe the body is chambered. A lot of the less expensive guitars seem to be lighter than usual. But that sounds REALLY light. The truss rod access caught my eye too. Looks like a really long rout… all the way to the first tuner?
Fun video, thank you for sharing! Yes please on doing a video with you modding up this instrument. I believe it is very nice looking. I've heard worse pick ups on other cheap guitars. My beater practice guitar is a StratOGlary, and it doesn't sound great. Your LyxTelCaster looks quite nice.
It's nice when you get surprisingly good cheap guitar .A few months ago I bought a Harley Benton TE 20 HH T style for £76 +p&p for a laugh expecting very little and its a great little player .The fact that that one is so light makes it very appealing and interesting to see how it turns out after a bit of work .
Would love to see this set up properly, and to see it ridiculously modded (like Cunife) and perhaps go crazy and add a piezo and synth output. I mean, go beast mode crazy.
The body is Paulownia wood, an Asian species. There are some plantations in the US, the Jimmy Carter estate, for example. The “mahogany” in the description is a bit misleading, probably referring to the colour, although that’s a bit inaccurate as well.
Thanks for putting this video out. I would be curious to see how this would sound with a setup. After that, you can decide what you want to do with it. That's my input.
The UK Amazon has one for £102.40 it looks horrible in the pictures and there are complaints in the comments. Someone ordered a rh version and got a lefty instead. They call it a 30’’ version.
bought 2 of these a few years back because they were beautiful looking but had to send them back......technically they weren't the effort. Main issue constantly going out of tune no matter what I did.

About two and a half years ago I decided that after playing for 20 plus years, I wanted to finally try a T-style guitar. I ended up ordering three different ones from Amazon. One of them was a Lyx Pro identical to the one you have in this video. My experience was similar to yours. The finish on the body was nice, and I really liked the neck, but everything else was "meh"... I ended up sending the Lyx Pro back. I do think that it could have been a good base for a mod platform though. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours...

I guess you don't know how to set up a guitar properly. Take it to a luthier. Check the neck for straightness. Adjust the string height. set the intonation. Set the pickup height. ... its a cheap guitar yes.. I bought the same guitar as a Halloween prop,,, but after that I set it up properly and it actually plays pretty well.

It could use a quick setup but overall, it doesn't seem too horrible. I wonder what it will sound like if it gets intonated and the bridge set up and the nut filed
I want to get one of these, or the Glarry mustang looking guitar (which is around 59$ usd in America right now) and use it to learn how to solder and wire new pickups
The Grotes are a great value and just a bit better and more consistent. Rock on!
Is it light? Is it a light guitar??
For real, it looks really cool for the price and I'd love to see how good it can become with some mods!
It doesn’t look too bad from a distance. Up close, I’d prefer to back up. But if it’s what you can afford, go for it. I’ve seen much worse.
Hey Landon! would you interested in trying one of our guitar racks?
Just looking at it when you pulled it out you can tell it needs a shim and proly a truss adjustment. That thing looked like a banana!🤣
First thing I thought as well. The action was so high because the truss rod needed to be loosened a bit. The neck is bent over on itself.
Mod it, good sir. MOD IT! 🤣
I spent the lockdown(s) learning to work on guitars, and it’s turned into a really enjoyable hobby. I’d like to see what you can do with this & maybe get a few ideas along the way. So yes - mod it. 👍🏼
I can’t help but wonder if maybe the body is chambered. A lot of the less expensive guitars seem to be lighter than usual. But that sounds REALLY light. The truss rod access caught my eye too. Looks like a really long rout… all the way to the first tuner?
yeah i ordered the mezza goobie 1.21 gigawatt duel rectumizer... and it turns out it has nothing to do with the electric guitar!
Fer Crissakes dude, it's Paulownia. That stuff makes basswood seem heavy. I love your tongue in cheek videos. Youre my favoriteRUclips star.
I know this sounds like a dumb question but I’m a beginner. What did he do around the 14 min mark to make it sound electric?????
Distortion pedal you mean?
I figured it out, it’s the amplifier. It’s pretty old. Doesn’t have a gain knob. Appreciate you inquiring 🫡
Yes, I'm curious if you're able to fix it up nice. That Chinese guitar of mine is just collecting dust. lol
The body is Paulownia wood, an Asian species. There are some plantations in the US, the Jimmy Carter estate, for example. The “mahogany” in the description is a bit misleading, probably referring to the colour, although that’s a bit inaccurate as well.
Everyone loves finding that one little cheap guitar that just gets to you. it's a quest to find these little gems, few and far between.

Please check out the FGN JIL2 "tele" type. It's Fujigen factory Telecaster, made in Japan.
bought 2 of these a few years back because they were beautiful looking but had to send them back......technically they weren't the effort. Main issue constantly going out of tune no matter what I did.
..I think my Ash Tray Bridge is defective, the butts just fall off onto the floor every time I put out a cigarette in it, ..I'm up to 3 packs a day, ..so, butts all over the floor. ..wtfck. 🤷🎃🚬
Hi Landon, thanks for the video. Yes, it’d be really interesting to see what a full upgrade (tuners, bridge, p/ups, pots etc) does to/for that guitar. Greetings from South Africa
Hope to see what you can do with it Landon. It looked like it had potential.
electronics and pickups to the trash ! The amp made no miracles lol . Thank you for the presentation !
Is it light? Is it a light guitar? 🥴😁
Kidding! Do a follow up/fix it video! 🤘🏻🔥 Love your content and your sense of humor 😎
Do you plan on selling that fender mustang competition bass anytime soon?
Did the video with the 30 inch get removed?

@landonbailey - Thank you. I hadn't scrolled far enough back in time. oops 🤦♂️. And the stupid RUclips app still doesn't have the Channel Search option.
You don’t need a luthier for a setup

Is it 39 inches?
Loving the vid so far! Cool to see you trying out more long form ones as well as the Shorts content
