I once met Chris on the Avon at Ellingham (he was on the opposite bank) we chatted across the river for an hour or so. After a while he packed and as he left he called across and said ‘I think you’ll get one any minute’ (at this stage I hadn’t had a touch) He’d gone just 50 yards when my rod lurched over and I landed a 7.5lb barbel.

My Angling Hero , I met him at the NEC some years ago where he showed the audience how to cast with a Centre Pin reel , I was agog at his ability with a pin & stuck almost dumb just at his immense presence . Yes, I loved A Passion for Angling & still do . This man is an absolute champion of fishing . Please also know I am a match fisherman ! not what you would expect I know but that is the pull of this great man.

I had the pleasure of meeting Chris, pretty sure it was at Chatsworth at the Game Fair, he humoured me whilst I chatted about my Barbel fishing on the Dove at Tutbury around the turn of the century, he was a real gent and even offered to have a days fishing on the Hampshire Avon with him, but I moved to Scotland and it never happened. Salmon and trout fly fishing is my sport these days. Such a pleasant chap to talk to.

As a born-again birder, Chris might enjoy our Keyhaven marshes in the New Forest. Avocets, spoonbills, merlins, peregrines, lots of divers and grebes in the winter, and particularly marsh harriers. Being on the sea wall at dawn is an advantage, and maybe a problem for lie-abed sorts, but later getter-uppers can still see all the above, often at close range. A peregrine flying upwind in a blow, carrying a green plover, passed me so closely, I felt I could reach out and touch it. Maybe an occasional change from Cranborne Chase?

I always remember watching a passion for Angling in my council house in Manchester aged 13. I would then go to my local pond and imagine i would catch a big carp on my 4lb line. The best i managed was 12oz perch but i always dreamed. I maybe should of used a wiggly worm, a wiggly worm.
