Caitlin 3 point shooting is much different in the WNBA than from Iowa. The WNBA started guarding Caitlin as soon as she get out of her car 😊. Full court press on her and try to stay so close toher it like they trying to hug Caitlin 😊. She don't get those same looks from 3. However Caitlin game because of the intense pressure started relying more on her teammates. Her passing has started to be what she is known for now.

    • @stevehardwick7285

she's been double teamed her whole life and never really got wide open looks at the basket. Her legs are fatigued from going steady since the beginning of college season. I think after the Olympic break and a couple weeks of rest, she's going to light it up.

also, she answers to the coach, her playing style could be a forced change. Wouldn't put it past Sides to intentionally make her change her playing style to being support instead of the point leader. Sides isn't a good coach.

I believe her style of play is deliberately being stifled to keep her from running away with records. She should have at least 3-4 triple doubles! Sides pulls her to prevent it from happening! 😢

@@justdafax Reese's average game would be 10-11 rebounds, 3-4 layups and put backs and 4 foul shots. You guys act like she's another Shaq. She's a slightly above average rebounder and sub par offensive player that misses 60% of layups. If Caitlin was black, there wouldn't even be a conversation.

I didn't see CC struggle in those first games. The team had no chemistry. She was still scoring pretty well. Her passes were surprising her teammates. Now they are getting their chemistry. I watched a video documentary about CC and she was intense, to the point she tend to push her team mates to the edge. CC is built to be a general, a leader, and she's clashing with Sides style of play that obviously hadn't worked in the past.
You don't stick a player like CC in a team. It's more like you build a team around CC. That's what Iowa did and obviously worked. She needs a coach that can handle her intensity and Sides is probably not it.

Lisa Bluder (Caitlin's college coach) said in interviews that it became clear to her that she couldn't use her traditional playbooks with Caitlin. She said she needed to "let Caitlin be Caitlin" and revamped Iowa's offensive strategies to take advantage of what Caitlin could do.
And that raises an interesting point - the WNBA will be a lot more exciting to watch in general if coaches stop relying on traditional playbooks and instead look for ways to use their star players creatively.

And to address the Turn Overs, look at the ratios to get the actual impact on the game and you get Clark #7 in Assists/TO (Reese #8); Reese # 3 in Steals/TO (Clark #9). I enjoyed seeing them on the same team in the All-Star game, but as for their regular play, Clark clearly is playing better with a more positive impact on the game for her team AND the league (and I didn't even have to mention her being face guarded behind the ball or from 90ft out). She has also accomplished all that having played more games than any other team, coming off the extra long college season (shortest break), with the second most minutes played of all players in the WNBA this season! ROTY was never a real question.

She's still getting the job done. Caitlin is averaging 17 pts. and 8 assists a game. Let's assume that all her assists are 2-pointers and not 3s. 17 pts.+16 pts. from assists = 33. Even if all her turnovers are converted into 3s = 16.5...she still nets +16.5 pts. a game. Can we now stop talking about her turnovers and talk about how exciting Caitlin is as a basketball player.

I keep saying this in the hope that eventually it will become generally acknowledged (hopefully before I die and/or Clark retires): Clark has a ton in common with Bird.
In this instance, we're talking about her having been called a one dimensional player who can only shoot. Well, just as an aside, the player who said that either knows so little about basketball she shouldn't be playing, or should at least get sent back to Basketball 101 tutoring.
But never mind her...let's get back to Clark, who imho has a game that is remarkably similar to Birds. Yes, she can shoot like Steph. But Bird shot like Steph before Steph did, and he was also a playmaker, which came from, among other places, his freaky good basketball IQ, his unbelievable passing (about which I've heard many commentators make the same amazed remarks commentators were making about Bird's passes...e.g., his threading impossible needles, his eyes in the back of his head and other unfathomable throwns to where he somehow knew his teammate would be, etc. His leadership and toughness were also the subjects of frequent credit--and, in the case of his toughness, awe.
Am I the only one who sees parallels here with Clarks game and assets? And I'm not even talking about all their games' similarities-- and I'm not even going into the whole "white savior" label others kept foisting onto them, with both wanting no part of it, or any of the other efforts to see them not for their play, but for their race, which was said to be the reason for their success instead of any talent (remember Rodman's saying "If Bird were black, he'd be just another player?" Sound familiar?
So...a player saying all Clark can do is shoot, is the same ignorant and/o delusional and/or resentful rap that Bird got, and it persisted until he managed to make it obvious to even the most ignorant and most resentful (btw, I understand the resentment, in both instances; I just think it's misplaced, because the injustices that are resented are no more Clark's doing than they were BIrd's) that that wasn't gonna fly, as he broke records, won MPVs and other honors, and kept being great, showing them up through his game rather than by fighting back any other way. He never allowed the media to bait him into entering the fray, he just stayed respectful, kept working like an animal, and played his game.
Again...sound like a path being taken by anyone else we know?

I gave AR props recently. She has worked on her game, She recently got 2-3 point shots. She had zero up until halfway through the season and only 1 - 3 pointer in her college career. She got the double doubles. And she hasn't been running her mouth being a poor sport like she was. So she has worked on her skills and deserves credit for that. But the stat padding really gets to me. And she makes a lot of fouls to get her rebounds that the refs never call. She backs into people too hard and shoulders them hard to get the shot' Not always but there are plenty of them and they never call a foul on her for it. I have never seen them call a foul for it even once. It seems like too many people in the WNBA, including the refs, are in on handing the ROTY to her. There is no comparison between AR and CC. CC has broken men's records and can shoot from the half court. CC makes impossible passes and shots that almost bring tears to your eyes they're so beautiful. I have never seen a woman play like CC before. And she has beautiful form doing it and she is a role model to kids. Even with all of the assaults and abuse that she has suffered never a negative word comes out of her mouth. Also, Thank you for the comparisons of the turn overs for these legendary men players. Most of Clark's turnovers are passes that her teammates fumble. Do you judge a QB based on incomplete passes that bounce off his receivers hands? This is why it's sad that Clark isn't on team USA where we could see what she could do with players that have the talent to capitalize on her sharp passes.

  • @darchon5
    @darchon5 Месяц назад +1

Nice commentary, just one issue though: when you say at the end that you don't fault either Clark or Reese having a low FG% as rookies, because it's not the same - Clark gets more defensive attention at all times than does Reese, including getting double teamed more than Reese, and Reese' at the 4 puts up almost all her shots from inside 5-6 ft, vs Clark taking the most 30ft+ 3s in the league. Obviously Reese as a big should have a significantly higher FG% than a guard with the longest range at the top of everyone's scouting reports, right? But:
    - Clark: 40.3% FG
    - Reese: 41.1% FG
That's not much of a difference, and after considering context, it is and should rightly be criticism-worthy of Reese, and there should be no shame in saying that. I mean, there's a reason the top 8 in FG% are all bigs, and there's only 1 guard in the top 16.

@@vincente4570 why are Clark fans mad about Angel winning the title game no Clark fans talk about other LSU players, Cardoso beat her too see any Clark fans mad at her? It’s the way Angel went about it she showed poor sportsmanship, chose to act like a villain and when she finally realized that was probably a mistake she doubled down made more statements about Clark to the press then cried and complained about how she was being treated. In the meantime Clark is just saying it is what is I’ll just keep taking the hits and go out and play B-Ball. People are already forgiving Chennedy Carter for that hit on Clark and admiring her game. The All-Star game went a long way in doing the same for Reese but if we get back to the regular season and get the same poor sportsmanship, attacking Clark on and off the court, she’ll undo it all. It has nothing to do with Reese winning a game or her skin color, it’s all about attitude and perception. There’s ways to be competitive and win games without being an asshole.

A double double is a fake stat! Who has the most double double in the NBA? Exactly, who cares.Reese is a hell of a rebounder but that in and of itself is not enough to be the MVP on the team or ROTY for the WNBA
No team in the WNBA actively plan a game strategy around stopping Reese. Which of the two have been consistently double teamed even in the preseason games? I think we all know the answer.

A stat that says scoring 10 points is a big deal, equivalent to having 10 rebounds or stats is a poor stat. The equivalent of 10 boards or assists in scoring is more like 20 or maybe even more. Just because 10 has two digits in it doesn't make it an accomplishment in scoring.

People were already watching and all of their games were being televised. The scoring, assists, 3-pointers are not things that CC is just starting to do. She's been doing it. If you watched her team last year, there were players who learned to play with Caitlin and they went very deep 2 years in a row. Her accolades are too numerous to mention. As for Angel, I'd rather be talking about her fundamentals in the low post game as a whole, not just in the Dub, but coming into the Dub. Poor footwork, inefficiency in close range, no real shooting technique to speak of. But as I look at her game, I believe she has room to improve in the areas that I mentioned and make for a more compelling conversation. A good rebounder, absolutely! But the skill level of these 2 players are incomparable.
