  • Various Glasspar models being tested. More background from Eddie Grijalva: As far as I can remember, here it is: The date was the summer of 1959, location, Back-Bay, Newport Beach, CA, that area was also known as the Newport Dunes. The back round were just plain cliffs, now million dollar homes. The boats that we were testing were, the G-3, Del Mar, Sea Fair Sedan with twin motors, the Marathon and a Avalon prototype unfinished black hull, we made some changes on the hull that Bill Tritt wanted to test. These are the names of some of the Glasspar crew that were there that I remember, Darrel Trudau, Del Gerkie, Norm Elliott, Joe Mata, the CEO Bill Tritt and Eddie Grijalva.

The brand new (just coming out) Merc 800 (powering the cabin cruiser) was a tiger of an engine. My brother got quite a lot of barefoot skiing behind ours on our 16 foot tri-hulled family boat. I loved that 1960 Merc 800 (76 cid). The '59 Fat Fifty on the black boat really moved out pretty well on this film, and the Flying Scott 60 really shoved that G3 with authority. Great film, and I loved the twin Lark 35s and the Mark 78 on similar boats.

My father bought a 17' cabin cruiser Glaspar new in 1959 with a 60 hp Merc.
He actually drove it like this video. It would do 30 mph.

We "had" a 20 foot Glaspar Seafair Sunliner I put a 140 HP & had the transom reinforced the boat would go about 55 mph. One day my wife & children were at a lake were most/many people would ride in mastercrafts boats. A guy and his three female friends asked if I would like to race (I knew most mastercrafts w/351 hps would only go about 40 mph) I said okay we got to the turnaround point neck & neck, I said to my wife old on to the kids. I took off, he said HOW fast will that boat go? I said almost 55 mph. He was a nice fellow & had a nice boat.
