I once read that an author (can't for the life of me remember which one) couldn't tell which words were written on 'good' days and which were on 'bad' days, and I've found that to be the case myself. So I tell myself that I'm producing the same quality of words, just maybe not in quantity. And as far as my own project- since I'm counting working on it in a few different ways, I managed to hit my goal before 9 A.M.! Thanks in large part to Shay's stream, lol.

i think i’ve seen this quote before! im 90% its neil gaiman, he said something along the lines of “words aren’t going to wait for you, whether you’re inspired or not, you have to write when you’re not ‘inspired’… and the weird thing is six months later, you’re going to look back and you’re not going to remember which scenes you wrote when inspired and which scenes you wrote because they had to be written.” it’s really stuck with me too!

I got 3k words today, 1300 for my morning project and 1700 for my evening ptoject. My feelings about "bad" days is this: I write often. I write almost every day, all year long. I don't strictly need Nanowrimo to get me writing. I am always working on writing. I know this is true for you too Kate, I've followed you for years. Hence, nanowrimo is just a fun community thing, and winning is a little meaningless, thus a bad day here and there are just "meh, I will try again later, or tomorrow". Butt in chair gets words on page but I don't force myself for hours upon hours if the magic isn’t there for one day. If there are several days like it, I try to evaluate if there's a problem with the story, but that's it. Some people only write during nanowrimo and camp, and for them it's different.

I was a bit on the struggle bus today as well. I’m really trying hard to get more exercise in my life so I did a workout video after doing some work in the morning. My thought was to get all the stuff I needed to get done, exercise and then be ready for a productive afternoon of writing. I did feel fantastic after the exercise video, but then when I took a shower and got in my cozy clothes, all I wanted was to lay down and sleep! My brain didn’t want to engage. Plus a character that I was really looking forward to writing did not come across well on the page. I envisioned her as feisty and a little snarky, with sarcastic remarks that were going to make her lively and fun. Instead she came across as grumpy and dour. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Wednesday and Thursday are 2 of my busiest days of the week and writing those days are always hard.

Struggling is part of being a writer, and it's great you're happy with the results you got regardless.
I have 1300 words so far today, have deleted a scene because it contains a plot point I no longer want, started writing the next scene and have decided that the scene (which is new to the outline,) doesn't actually fit, so I won't be keeping it. Still counting the words though.

I so wish I could remember how to crochet because I love that you are doing a word scarf lol. I think you did great for day 2 and yeah I understand about those ebbs and flows where one day is really productive and then the next feels like, not so much lol. The interesting thing about me and my not-nano project (okay my unofficial NaNo lol) is that not logging it on the sight has taken the pressure off for me so that I can truly feel proud of even getting just 5oo new words in. Could also be because I'm being made to slow down due to recovery and all but either way, it's making me take stock in what I can get done instead of focusing so much on what I'm not able to get done. That said I can't wait until next year's NaNo when I will hopefully be more settled and I can get back to my strict structured hardcore deadline that I love so much lol 🤣🤣 Until then though I'm grateful for what I can get done. Can't wait to see what you get into tomorrow lol. Take care Kate! ❤

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  10 месяцев назад +1

Ooooh I love that epiphany! I can totally see how the NaNo site adds pressure! I've had a version of that in my own way, where I forget to log one day and then two and it very quickly becomes I'll just forget about it entirely bahaha. It can be sorta disheartening! I'm glad you're not letting that be a deterrent this time. (Also had to look up how to spell deterrent because I kept getting it wrong! Who knew all the vowels were e's? Not me!) I'm also very glad you're taking it slow amidst your recovery! 💜 I know that can be a lot harder done than said.
Also I am a litttttttttle sore from yesterday's yoga bahaha. Like in my upper abs? (Who knew those were there!) But I'll be doing today's yoga after the Twitch stream! :)

I like the calendar type scene board on here with the blue sticky notes. The clothesline method works too, hanging index cards with clips etc. The stair step method as well, putting each scene clipboard on each step etc.. I like the basket method, by putting everything for a scene in a basket and stack them all up etc.. It works well for keeping organized, which is the hardest part for most writers. In a way we are all stacking up parts of speech in every moment in a similar fashion when you think of it. I bought all my paper baskets at a dollar store for 60 bucks etc, Very versatile tool. Color coded as well.

Even sticker on the side, just a fast way to build a story fast in rough draft stages etc.

For me, because I know I have a vacation week in November (wasn't committed to NaNo at the time), I already planned ahead which days I could write and how much I'd have to write to reach 50k. All I can do now is follow the plan, if I don't get the words I don't get them but at least I know that I'm writing every day that I possibly can.
As for veggie recipes, it's pretty basic but lately I've been loving making an omelette with cheese spinach and bell peppers! I'm not vegetarian so sometimes I have it with tuna but on it's own it's filling and pretty easy - I can make it in like 20 minutes during my lunch break!

I hand write all of my projects because I just think better that way. When the writing gets hard on some days, I make myself write anyway. Even if it is notes to myself about what I have written or what I need to write. I will also brainstorm some ideas if something isn't working, or I will write a future scene that I know of and that might job something that could come before or after.

My family makes something we call veggie pizza. It's also known as veggie squares. It's cresant rolls, flattened, as the crust with cream cheese and sour cream as the "sauce" (my family likes to add taco seasoning to this) and then you pile on your cheese and veggies. It's a great cold meal/snack and it's easy to adapt to vegetarian/vegan diets.

My favourite easy veggie dish is broccoli soup:
Boil one broccoli (cut into chunks), one drained can of chickpeas, and one can of coconut milk, and a splash of water, and a teaspoon of currypowder, for 10 minutes. Throw in blender till there are no chunks, and add salt and pepper to taste. It's extremely easy and perfect for low energy days.

My main character just met his, admittedly psychotic, love interest for the first time so i'm hoping to get more written of their first interaction before I call it a day on this project because, tho this... isn't necessarily for nano, i had an amazing idea for an entire world that I'm thinking maybe if i finish draft 1 of this, i can move the story to either A) take place in this future-punk-esque world i got in my head or B) have it be connected in some way TO the future-punk world. I'm wanting to start writing like a biography or smth all about that world so that i don't forget anything but i want to make sure i get the daily count for nano in at least before i work on that

It really is!! I love handwriting for brainstorming so I’m excited to try it while drafting when I’m not pushing myself to write at a certain speed. Like a throwback to how I did it in high school and college, just writing with no expectations. I enjoyed handwriting then so clearly something in the meantime has changed (and I’m betting it’s the personal pressure to sort of “hurry up”). There's no editing a blank page! Sometimes we just gotta write garbage to get the story down (though I'm sure it's better than you think). Good luck for the rest of the week!!

Barely slept and took ages to get into writing this morning, but accidentally banged out 3k words anyways :)

Hey Kate, I love your content. I'm sure you're already aware of this but Starbucks had been union busting and their staff is currently striking in some locations and those that aren't are planning to soon. I ask that you look into it in case you aren't already aware. They also fund Israel so... I personally wouldn't recommend supporting them.

Bahaha I might rediscover this about myself! My hope is that since I'm drafting the story for the first time and not putting stress on how quickly it needs to be done, I'll really enjoy the process. It's how I used to write sooooo many stories as a kid, so I'm hoping I'll tap into that vibe!

I have a few recipes that I send to people when they request. If there's a way to private message I can share my veggie heavy recipes with you.
I did a 15-ish minute sprint after midnight. Day 1 had under 1000 words, but I had to take a 20 minute break to lay with my 4 year old to get him to go to sleep.
