We found we only needed it for stretchy materials or when we were doing the fancy pictorial stitches in "sewing" mode. For the towel it seemed fine without it, although I'm sure using it wouldn't hurt!
Not only would you get better results with a stabilizer, but with towels most people also use a topper (actually on anything that has a loopy surface). Toppers keep the stitches from sinking into and disappearing in the towel surface.

Yikes...it's upsetting seeing you change the thread without cutting at the spool and removing from the needle end. Terrible for the machine.
