Why modular effects are better than guitar pedals - with Xaoc devices Timiszoara

- Modular effects have stepped up their game over the last years, and the new Xaoc devices Timiszoara is a great example of this! It comes with 176 great sounding algorithms on an SD card. But the module has an open-architecture, meaning people can write and use their own effects as well, and you can easily exchange and manage those. On top of that there is great CV control over the parameters, so you can modulate the effects in detail, and truly incorporate them in your sounds. And that is what I’ll focus on in this video. After a quick overview of the functions and features of the Timiszoara, I show a series of patch ideas in a few different categories of effects.

Hello everyone! I misspoke twice in this video: I should have said open-architecture, where I said open-source. People are free to write and use their own effects on the device. The factory programs are not open-source and copyrighted by Xaoc devices.
If you make a patch where several instruments are playing at the same time, like beats, base, voices etc, would you not preferer to use several different effects or even just reverbs? I usually send everything into an end of line reverb pedal, but then also some more effects on individual sounds, like a delay pedal for send and return and an extreme reverb/2hp or Monsoon on something else.
Hello Jonas! For me a basic good sounding stereo reverb on the aux send of my mixer is crucial. For sure you can use the Timiszoara like that, but think it's under using it. I also enjoy having a simple delay, either as pedal or module for basic duties. I think a module like Timiszoara shines because of the versatility, and when it's modulated in interesting ways that pedals can't. If it's the only or first effect, you can still use it as a great master reverb as well, so it beats others. But in a larger studio, I'd hate to say it... You might want both ;)

I got two cases that works as independent synths. For a jam or gig I usually bring one case and a Soundcraft mixer with stereo send and return and a Eventide Space (Pearls before Swine probably) for an overall reverb. I also got a cosmix with one send and return that I usually use for a delay pedal, and also an S.B.G module for safe pedaling but also the option for modulation through the EXP on the pedal. But yes Timi seems like a really useful guy as he has three inputs for modulation, and not least many many algorithms to play around with. I will probably get that one row NANO case at some point, to make a control bridge in my spaceship, but then again GAS is probably the dark side of the force.
Kids, if you are reading this, never ever start with eurorack, play with kittens, chase butterflies, or boys and girls, do drugs or whatever. Do literally everything else instead.

Glad you like it! Modular FX can be powerful and compact as well. But indeed I also have to say I get more and more mileage out of these modules that go beyond the basic voice nd open new sounds in modular land :)
Try using VCV for modular effects, it's free if you have a decent computer and audio interface! And actually much more flexible, because you can run multiple instances of most modules. For example, I have patches using 16 delay modules, modulated with 16 independent LFOs. It's madness!

I know VCV and understand that it's way more powerful regarding the amount of modules and polyphony.
But I really like twisting knobs and patching my half-modular stuff.
For hardware FX I mostly use the NTS-1 and sometimes my Matrixbrute with a splitter cable. Rarely some software FX in Live...
I'm just playing around with strange bleeps and bloops without any real goal in mind until I find something interesting and then never hit record...
I just think that it would be cool to be able to modulate the FX with stuff I already got and build a decent FX eurorack with 2-3 FX modules, some LFOs, some VCAs and a mixer.
Worst thing that could (will?) happen is that modular systems tend to grow over time and the best way to not get addicted is to not start at all... ;-)
@@manuelsteinmair yeah, I can't really justify the cost and space used by hardware modular. I think if you do it, you'd have to be quite disciplined and plan it carefully. Get a case the right size and decide what modules you need first, and limit it to those. You could also go hybrid, use hardware for oscillators/sequencing and VCV for effects. Infinite possibilities really. There are also a few modules I'd like which don't have a good virtual alternative, like the Instruo Arbhar and Qubit Databender so maybe one day....😉

I already have the Disting Mk IV and the FX Aid, and this looks like a grown-up version of the latter. It’s on my wishlist, but- however good the mult-fx module, you can only ever use one effect at a time. Anyway, good demo, lots to think about, thanks!
There's a new fx-aid that is either out now or about to be out. OLED but bigger and more powerful.

True, just wanted to add that the Timiszoara has a combo bank that has combinations of some filters, like a delay & reverb or chorus & phaser. But you get less control.

Love my Strymon Magneto, and real tape echo is prohibitively expensive, bulky and fiddly. And Magneto is it's own funky creative thing. There's some very creative reverbs, I'd like a Desmodus Versio, to be able to switch firmware too. And all the funky granular modules can't be beat (except maybe by Tasty Chips hardware). But, for classic studio effects, I don't believe there's been a module with a reverb that sounds quite as great as UA FX algos. A classic Boss Chorus / Space Dimension stills sounds more right than almost anything else on that duty too. And similarly I prefer the sound of an Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man to most analog / digital delays. They're not expensive, by modular standards too, especially second-hand. Golden Reverberators go for about $250, a lot less than what an equivalent eurorack module might go for. Boss Chorus, even Waza, $150ish and a Memory Man, maybe $120. Sometimes you don't have the space or power for the eurorack modules too. At least the pedals can be stored in a drawer, and used on the floor. I like how VCV Rack Valley Plateau sounds quite a bit more than most eurorack reverbs, maybe some one could port it to a module.
Nice video, and I completely agree that modular effects are *way* better than guitar pedals! Modulation is the real game changer. An example is a phaser, if you think about the pedal version you're usually limited to just a sinewave or triangle LFO with rate and depth. Using VCV, I can modulate a phaser with an envelope follower, sequencer, any LFO waveform including wavetable LFOs, or sample and hold. Phasers driven by sample and hold in particular sound completely different to regular phasing, and it's one of my favourite effects. There's an example of this on my channel, and a few much stranger modular guitar effects. Would be nice to see more people getting into this, you can make almost any effect you can think of as long as you have a decent computer and some imagination. Hardware modular effects would be cool but I can't justify the cost!
Those are perfect examples indeed! So much more customization, that it leads to completely different sounds. And VCV is a perfect way to get into modular. Thought about exploring this, but there is some good info out there already. Keep up the work!
very debatable. pedals and rack units have much better SQ. they aren't limited by power and therefore use more advanced cpu and circuitry. not to mention ad/da stages. they also have much more variety - eg reverbs in Euro are all based on three common and weak architectures (daisy or spin usually). most outboard is midi-controllable, not to mention the ITB ones. finally, too much modulation gets out of hand or lead to new sounds which are achievable by simpler means just different starting points. and as a postscriptum, the seeming variety of Euro FX is an illusion: name some creative delays other than Mimeophon and 4ms offerings, weird reverbs other than ErbeVerb.
the trick as just with outboard gear is to build a very focused system for one's purpose. but if one wants to generalise, then no, Euro FX is not 'better' at all
@@yurijogurtsov8710 well, I only use software but just my opinion, I think the modular approach (whether it's software or hardware) is more flexible. There are plenty of creative delays in Eurorack - Intellijel Rainmaker and Qubit Nautilus are two examples that spring to mind. With virtual modular you can duplicate multiple copies of effects, and even use some modules polyphonically so it's effectively 16 delays in one module, with any parameter modulated by separate envelopes/LFOs/S&H etc on each channel, then route that through 16 filters, phasers or anything you like. Best of luck doing that with hardware 😉
@@VirtualModular agree re:Rainmaker and Nautilus, though the first's resonator is crap, UI is messy, and taps structure is less controllable then one can achieve with something as simple as Logic's Delay Designer)) Nautilus is as interesting as a zillion of free Max patches, but fwiw, I like QuBit's offerings, it's at least fresh and don't economise on components visavis something like MakeNoise.
but if we talk software modular, it's time to bring in Max and things like Bitwig to the equation - there you have all the modulations you want, untied to the coding limitations of the original modules you have in VCV.
with hardware it's about SQ and variety. you lose on modulation, but only quantitatively speaking - whereas qualitatively, I repeat my argument: the more you automate and more relationships you draw, the most lost you become in a less coherent structure without control. hence so much modular music sounds generative and/or chaotic. at the same time, for h/w you can add any modulations exposed in midi, controlling those with digital precision and then route the (much more hifi) audio to the same Max FX for more fun. what you can't have in Euro is the initial SQ - kudos to Strymon for pushing the envelope, but that's the limit, things won't develop from here.
Eurorack has been around for like 18 years now, and the final results are still not more 'modulated' or otherwise exiting than people did with Audiomulch, Nord modular or Kymas of the world.

@@yurijogurtsov8710 yeah I agree with some of those points. A lot of ambient modular Eurorack is a bit dull. I think that's a lack of creativity by the users, not the kit. And I like generative/random stuff! You can sync VCV in various ways if you want precise control, I think most people prefer randomness with the generative stuff.

Thank you! And good question, that's not always clear: I use the internal clock of the sequencer I use. If you have a sequencer without a clock, you need something like an LFO to drive it.

Hello there! The Timiszoara is true stereo. Altough I should say some effects are of course, and it depends a bit on what you mean. So there are obviously mono effects. There are a lot of effects that create a stereo output, and keep the stereo dry input, but you would get the effect on both sides, no matter which input you use. But also effects, like delays that keep both the dry input and the wet effect on the correct side of the stereo field. So you could for example FEED it a hard panned ping pong delay, and then have another delay added to that, in the correct stereo field.
I really enjoy using my Zadar and have been admiring other Xaoc Devices, I love aesthetic and interfaces are super intuitive. This module wouldnt look out of place on the Nostromo ship in Alien! ☺️

Thanks! I don't understand the FX aid PRO, it's just big and expansive and only usefull if you really feel lost without a screen saying which effect is on. Otherwise the FX aid XL and Timiszoara are my two favorite multi effects atm. Both great; can't go wrong with either! I will probably buy an FX aid XL at some point, and it has the advantage of lots of affects to swap. But Timi offers a great selection as well, and I expect more will come from the community, as it is possible to write others for it.

can't find anything about the tempo sync capabilities in the manual or online

Hmmm, think those are mostly separate modules. For mixing, inverting, attenuating, offset I recommend Happy Nerding 3xMIA. Did a video on that a while ago. Copy I mostly do with Tiptop stackable cables. And clock dividers are separate tools. There might be a handy module I don't know about though!

I'm sorry, that wasn't the best choice of words now you say this! Should have said open-architecture! Meaning people can write custom effects, and the device can load those. The factory effects are not open-source, or available for customization if I get it right. Apologies!
My Empress Zoia Pedal Can Do Anything You Talked About In Your Video And You Don't Need The Space Of A Whole Room To Get The Desired Effect.
