Nice, and thank you so much! Was excited to make a video about this, but after it stayed in a solid place in my case. It's very detailed and controlled in a good way. It does shifting, of course, but also often end up using it as a subtle texture/detail/thickness effect. Enjoy the module!
Been waiting for this to come out since I saw it at Superbooth. I was sold when they just pinged it with some triggers and the feedback up, sounded stunning.
Yeah, think it sounds really good, and a versatile unit. Have to say I regret not spending some patch idea on pinging in this video, would have been worth it!
A patch I like: Make a percussive sound with FM(simple 2-op analog). Split it and send one copy into Koszalin then mix the output with the original. Experiment with using separate envelopes on the dry and wet signal. Finally, modulate the patch with stepped random(or sequenced) voltages into both Koszalins exp fm as well as the fm index of the original sound. This patch is great for creating rich and interesting metallic drum sounds.
I keep coming back to your video because you're the only one that does a good overview on this module. Great sounds and patch ideas! going add one of these to my rack soon. I've always wanted a frequency shifter but there werent many good affordable options until some what recently.
Hey, that's nice to hear! And indeed, the shifters are pretty recent in modular land. Think you will enjoy this one. A frequency shifter is pretty specific, but this one can do both 'classic' shifting sounds, as well as a lot of subtle textures and details, which for me makes it a tool I come back to all of the time. Fantastic review, I really appreciate the inclusion of koszalin in more tonal contexts, Xaoc modules certainly shine bright for noise, but shine brighter when harnessed into a more melodic scenario. Great work!
I think I like the Doepfer module you demoed a little better because it's more gnarly sounding where this one is more smooth & hifi. I was really liking the "out of tune ham radio" sound of the doepfer on dialogue. OH CRAP! I really like the eh-eh-eh-uh-uh vocal sounding patch around 9 minutes in! I want BOTH units!
Think that is spot on. Koszalin is digital, and think it's power is there. It's very precise, easy to get an unshifted signal, great stereo processing, detailed feedback control etc. The Doepfer is hard to tame, impossible to get a clean signal, and no stereo processing, but it has that analog rawness to it :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk that's my ENTIRE reason for interest in modular fat filters making gnarly textures and grungy zang tum tum era art of noise "fake fairlight" samples. both units are cool, but grunge wins my ears over. keep up the good work. the graphics you do are nice, but it's just the CONCEPTS getting explained along with trying different patches that I like. too many videos are 1 trick ponies that just don't show a module's potential. none of it makes any sense to me, but i can HEAR sounds that inspire me like 99.99999% of techno doesn't. there's another reviewer that used to drive me nuts demoing new modules he liked to make them sound familiar and whenever anything cool and weird like a "boing" that made me say "now we're talking!" he'd immediately go back to boring heard it a million times sounds. to me, techno is too much about conformity. DO NOT get me started on acid filter sweeps!
Great and really instructive, as usual! The Koszalin is indeed nice, but I'm not really into frequency-shifting. Xaoc is a great brand which I specially love for the Leibniz-System. I spotted the Fluctuations Magnetiques which I'd really like to aquire in the new version. Sadly I have not found anything on that since the presentation by the manufacturer :(
Thank you! And that's legit, it's a pretty specific flavor of sound :) I have some of their Leibniz system and it's pretty unique indeed. Will take me a bit more time, but also plan a video on that. As for the Magnetiques I understood Eowave is a bit held back by external problems on that, hope they'll sort it out. The announcement of the new one dropped the price of the old one like a year ago. I'm really happy with the one I snapped up in a good deal :) All the best!

The three units I already have are - by my experience - easy to understand quickly, if you got it in front of you. Still I often underuse it by just making it a Wavetableengine... And about the Fluctuations Magnetiques: I started to build my system almost exactly a year ago and happened to not even see the module. So as I've had a look into it, it already was completely off the shelves. Since I am a bit "underspecced" on Filters - I'd really get into an extensive device like it...
True, you don't need the whole line-up to get great stuff out of it. And That was unclear, the filter is indeed of the shelves for a long time, I bought it second hand!

Yeah, was expecting this one! :) Love both companies, but don’t mind being honest. There are two sides though: Koszalin is DSP based, and it’s advantages are there. It’s easy to find the ‘no shifting’ spot. That makes it useful for a lot of subtle sounds. Or sounds that go from clean to madness. Also its stereo, meaning you can feed stereo signals to it, and do fun self-patching etc. With the feedback options, it feels like the more flexible and easy to use alrounder to me. I think I will find a use for it in more occasions. The A-126 is analog, and frequency shifting is hard to do analog. It’s more difficult for this module to be clean, but I do find, and hate to say it, more ‘analog’ in some ways. It’s a bit more raw and pure. Can be pushed a bit harder, also with the VCO inputs. It's less clean in a nice way. I do feel you get the most out of it with the expander though, for stereo up and down shifted and feedback options. But that makes it quite a bit more expansive then Kosza.

If you're starting out which 3-5 modules would you recommend? And what do you currently have in the very small case (the one with the Thorn)? I mean the Sample case. Currently I have an Octatrack and a Behringer Crave. I'd like to into modular. I have thought about Thorn Vclfo, Koszalin, Wasp filter and and Doepfer Crossfader.
Hello! Good question. Of course would totally depend on what you would like to do with it. For example, with an octa and crave you have drums and a synth voice. You could focus on more experimental modulation, or effects, etc The small case is no system atm, those modules are a bit random, and will go back into the studio Doepfer case in a bit :)
@@mattissievers1416 I did a video on the Thorn VCLFO, which is realy good, but I think out of production? Of course Maths is an all time classic. I do think it's interesting as a playground for CV. I have been enjoying the ADDAC 506 a lot, but comes at a price and takes some getting used to. Cheaper options are the the Eowave zone BF - two LFOs with creative shapes and either frequency control or sync. And my first VC slew limiter I still have in my main case is the Doepfer A171-2. That one is like half a Maths, and great when combined with something like the Eowave zone BF. But these are all module I have hands on experience with, sure there is more out there :)
Maybe take a look at an effects module to go with your crave, the module featured in the video is good (it is an expensive niche module though) but have a look at a Monsoon for instance
Sorry this isn't about the topic of the video, though it's a great video too I'm loving the kos so much. But where did you get those desks/tables? The system to adjust them is so ingenious. I'm redoing my studio and wanted standing desks that *can be adjusted albeit rarely. This would be perfect!
No problem, friendly questions are always welcome! And I love it to. have been using this system for a while and it's great, and cheap. To be clear though, the're not automated/motorized in height, but everything is completely customizable, and that's great. Have changed them a few times, and keep expanding. Basically I just buy wood trestles that are adjustable in height. And a bunch of clean wood planks. I uses some screws to connect the planks, but there not even connected to the trestles, the weight of the wood and gear on it keeps it just fine. For some people and purposes that alone could be a winning pro :)

Haha, maybe yes! When recording I realized it takes a long time! The sound goes quite low before the high frequencies come back, but the low frequencies would be hard to catch for people listening on phones and things. Choices.. ;) All the best!
