I do a soft shut down of my store the last two weeks of December for two reasons. The first is that it gives me a much needed break and time with family over the holidays. The second is that I’m able to avoid the stress of navigating demanding customers who want something before Christmas even though there’s no way it could be delivered in time. It’s like the old “sharpen your ax” adage. Allowing yourself breaks during the year ultimately makes you a better business owner.
The person calling you dishonest was disappointing. You may not be everyone’s favorite person, but you are a very honest person. You have always been helpful to us whenever you’ve had the chance. The down side of social media is people can say anything. I wish you didn’t have to put up with it. Don’t like someone, don’t watch. Keep up the great content!
Thank you my friend. I suppose we are all dishonest to a certain degree though. If we really think about it. I know I would never tell my wife the truth about how I feel about these chickens pooping on my deck. Hope your event goes well.

This is my first year reselling. I was using it as a second income until October when I was laid off from my job. My previous job was a corporate job and I had corporate burnout, quit and relocated to another state. I learned that my health and family comes first. I don’t have a RUclips channel but I watch you all and wonder how you do it. It’s your company for a reason….. you are the boss. If you want to take time off, it seems that comments of negativity is someone who haven’t put health and family first. You know the holidays are coming, work hard and make it happen. I took a soft time of leave, traveled to see my only child(USAF) and new wife in their new home. Kevin, my Momma would say “ you will be able to make some people happy some of the time, but not all of the time” Happy New Year! Just WOW. Amazing what some folks think is acceptable to say to someone they don't even know. I've adopted more and more the attitude.....I seriously don't have to justify what I do to you.
You do what you need to do when you need to do it. Only YOU will know what is the best time, and the best reason. No one else needs to know any of that. I usually shut my store down ONLY when I'm away visiting family. If I have to for any other reason, I normally don't give specifics. I'll be back such and such date. Period.
I also agree with keeping things put away in an organized fashion. Nothing worse than praying you find something that just sold! We've all done it. LOL

I'd sold craft supplies and my own handmade items for many years. I ran it as a business from the beginning in 2004, but really it was just as a hobby or a way to make money to buy more supplies. 925 & My Go 2 Tape I do a hard shut down for one week during the summer. That is my time away with the family. I didn't shut down over the Christmas/New Year holidays, but I did slow down on listing. I am very busy this time of the year with my full-time job and also need to get ready for taxes for my business and my husband's business. He is the original self-employed person in the family and runs his own cabinetry business. There is so much to do this time of the year and you need to take breaks or slow down, at times, so you don't burn/stress out. Thank you for your videos!

As for shutting down your store, it’s important to take breaks! You take vacation when you work a full time “real job” so why not when you’re a reseller?
Hi, Yes I totally agree that if you feel comfortable shutting down your store you should do it. I usually do a soft shut down because I don't usually go on vacation for longer than a week and I'll prep for it with drafts. When people and or businesses are just starting there might be several years where you don't take a vacation. Hopefully you can build your business to the point where you can take time off and rest your mind and body. For that first commentor, content creation can be a business too. Integrating content creation with what we already do as a business is a really amazing way to increase our earnings.

I’ve shut my store down for travel once or twice for a day or two, but usually I have my daughter apartment- cat- and business-sit for me. She has her own reselling business that her husband manages while she’s gone to take care of mine and she texts me if she can’t find something, and I can usually tell her where it is. I just started reselling in Nov. I've learned so much from your channel and others similar. It's sad that people always want to be jaded about others' authenticity, but you're gracious about it and good at using it as a teaching opportunity for us. My husband is also a teacher (high school SpEd), I homeschool our 10 y.o., and we're about the same age. It's kinda fun to find a GenX RUclipsr, in a world of Millennials.
HS sped is not an easy job for sure.
We are FT Sellers and took 10 days off with store closed last January. Ouch. It hurt sales significantly. Still travel but will extend shipping times and not shut down again. It is just too hard to recover sales after shutting down. Taking time away is important but more important is living a life you don't feel the need to escape from. Stay positive. Love your content.

I enjoy your videos. I was looking forward to attending your Trash to Cash gathering until I ended up in the ICU last month. I’m still getting my strength back even though it’s SO close! I just started selling last January then put my store on away mode from May-mid November while we are at our Michigan cabin. It worked out well! 925 and My Go To Tape.
I shut my store totally down for the month of July to visit my parents and two weeks in September for a cruise this past year. I had no problems in doing that. It's important to spend time with family.
I do shut my store down almost every July to visit my parents in another state without letting sales happen because I got myself into a little pickle one year when I let sales happen while on vacation and I had to extend my time with my parents due to my mom having two surgeries instead of one. I spent 4 hours walking my husband thru mailing out 20 packages. It was torture for both of us. Lol. I swore not to do that again.
I'm just grateful for all the sales I get and don't worry about the ones I don't. Just keep plugging away!

What a crazy comment that person left! If they’re a true reseller they can turn reselling into a vacation! We take 1-2 long vacations a year and we added 3 Thrift-cations last year and NEVER stopped selling. Just added an extra day to time away so we could get things packaged stress free.
Hi Kevin - I did a soft shut down recently. It's Sad but there will always be haters out there. Some will be happy for you and learn from you as I did and still do. Then there are those who have to find something to tear others down - sad really. You keep doing what is best for you and your family and ignore the naysayers.
Another shed? The supply (not Hut) shed? I Didnt know about that one at all. lol. So you have 3 unattached sheds? Not including the ebay cave, which im assuming is in your house. Its great that you have a lot of land on your property to keep all those chickens and roosters and sheds!
I would love to see a video about the evolution of all your storage and work areas. Think the other viewers might as well.
When i outgrew my working space at my house, i first put shelves in an unused stairwell where i put all my supplies- my "supply stairwell" if you will. But i still had loads of inventory taking over my living room. So i built a 12x20 shed in my back yard. I love it! It opens up a lot of new opportunities for my business.
Think i might name it the Commonwealth Shed, in honor of one of my favorite flippers. And certainly the one with the most sheds!!

If you're a sole proprietor, which means you don't have someone else to run your business, the only option you have is to shut down in order to take time for yourself and your family. My dad did it as a small business owner and I know of a lot of brick and mortar places that close for a week once a year in order to take a vacation and spend quality time with their family. The advantage of selling online is that you can do the "vacation mode" and still make sales while you're napping on the beach, and you just have to ship it when you get home. I don't know many, if any, ebay sellers who DON'T use that from time to time. Also, thank you for defining "resellers"-that gave me a really nice chuckle! Keep doing what you're doing because even though "you don't tell the truth" according to your commenter, I have learned a ton from you and Dave both and appreciate your kind attitudes for sharing information to help your competition because you know that income is important to a lot of people.
I am new part time reseller.( 6mos.).so no vacation yet but I wish people could just be kind to each other. We are all here doing our thing our way.
I soft shut down whenever I go on a family vacation, about 4 times a year. Those usually last between a 4 day weekend and two weeks of my store being "open" to sales, but with a long shipping time. I feel like most of us get hyper focused on our reselling business and need to disengage sometimes to re-set. It's easy to get burned out or forget what's truly important! 925 and My Go 2 Tape. I always do a soft shutdown for the last two weeks of December. Sales are usually slow the week before Christmas, so it is a perfect time. I do this to have time with the grandkids and make cookies. The week between Christmas and New Years gives me time to get my office space organized and do year end paperwork. I also do a full inventory. I go through all my tubs checking for breakage, items in the right tubs, and everything is listed. This way my year starts off on the right foot. I have been watching your content since I started at the end of last year. I have learned a lot, Christmas week was the first time I put my shop on vacation mode, hard shut down. Once it was back off, I continued to get sales. Was astonished at how easy it was to be on pause for a moment. Love it!
I’ve been reselling since August of last year, but only really started properly listing and sourcing since October. Thus far I’ve made over $1K on my eBay store maintaining 50-100 items on my shop.
Definitely will be expanding it this year, I just scored a a few hundred beanie babies for a great price at my flea market. Most if not all In mint condition.
What are your thoughts on Beanie babies? I think they’re great to make $5-10 profit. Especially if you’re able to find super rare ones with errors and all.

I do this on the side with a part time job. To fill in when I’m short hours at work. I’m wanting to pay off my debt. But in hopes I can make this my full-time job. Because I love it! can’t wait to see where reselling take me this year.
It’s also been very helpful, at the moment because my spouse recently lost his job, I think being knowledgeable in selling helps in these unfortunate moments. To be able to supplement extra cash. When it’s needed.
I’ve found that beanie baby’s are really really tough to sell. They aren’t really valuable at all even with errors. Lot of work .. hopefully you do good on them!
@@itzhawkins The reason I got them was because they are all in mint condition tag and everything, also I was able to get them for $0.90 a piece. Over 400 pieces. It was a collector’s pile. Most of them are rare. A few valuable ones.
I think they sell great even for around $6 a piece. Most that I have I believe are worth between $15-20. And some $50-$100 because of their rarity. Also, they’re Easy to ship. I’m going through the process of organizing them right now, perhaps I will make a video showing my findings.

I never shut my store down, but when I need some time off to organize or for a vacation, I'll adjust my shipping from every day to 5 days and I'll schedule listings in advance for the days I'm off. I don't want the week of slow sales that always seems to happen when you restart your store after a shutdown. Use scheduled listings; keep it rolling.

I'm a part time reseller and in past years I've taken two soft shut downs per year. One in October and one the other a few days before and after Christmas. The past two years I decided to do hard shuts and I'm glad I did. It's all personal preference and everyone is different and has different goals. There was no reason for others to make ugly comments. Sounds more like jealousy to me. Thanks for all the great information.

I teach full time and do reselling to make ends meet. I only do soft shutdowns if I am going to be away from home for more than 4 days. Primarily between Dec 26-Jan 1 and a week in the summer.
I shut down my store every year around Dec 15. Sometimes through New Years depending on our travel plans. Sometimes a soft close, sometimes a hard close or a mix. This is important time to be with my family. I also have no qualms about shutting down for various vacations. I’m a one girl shop, so if I’m not available, that’s it. I’m retired and resell for fun money, so it makes it easier to shut down. It has never hurt my sales. When I reopen, things start selling. I think it is important to plan periodic shutdowns just to take a break!
Literally shut down my stores today for a month to visit family out of the country. This is why I do what I do to have the extra money to take a long time with family and take breaks when I want! Shut downs are best for work life balance 😊
Great video...I have been reselling part time for 20 years and I do shut my store down once a year for vacation...funny you mentioned going to the beach as I use my reselling funds to pay for a condo for our grown children and their families every year...I watch ADHD Dave as well and believe me you both are REAL resellers! 🙂
925 My go to tape. It’s amazing that you’re able to take time away. I put my store on a soft close during Thanksgiving and it was an amazing break and needed R&R and family time. I always *try* to see the positive in every situation, (although I’m not always successful…it’s my goal) I think you do this as well, your critics should do the same. Keep doing what you’re doing it’s working!
Mygototape. It's interesting to hear about the differences in shutting down the store. We haven't because we're retired and doing this as a side hustle so not as busy as you and many other sellers.

I shut my store down and ended all my listings the end of December. By the time the Christmas season is over, I'm ready for a break. I expect I will stay closed for the month of January and use the time to prepare all my paperwork for taxes and reset my listings by comping them out again and changing titles as needed before "selling similar" in February. The best seller is a happy seller so do what's needed to stay that way! 😊

I do a soft shut down but I also have scheduled listings during that time, 6 new ones and 6 end and sell similar ones. That way, my sales don't suffer at all, and since I have been scheduling my listings and been religiously consistent, with the 12 a day, my sales have increased by more than 30%.

I'm a part time/full time reseller...with a full time job, eBay is my second job. Any "vacation" is to spend time with my son when he has vacation. Listing only goes on hiatus on weekends or when I have time with my son, but the store goes on. I pick, pack, and ship always. I haven't officially shut my store down in the past 5 years. I need a proper vacation for sure!!

I do soft closures. I just did one about 5 days before Christmas until the 27th of December. I needed to get personal things done for Christmas, also it did save me from last minute shoppers who I just cannot guarantee receipt of goods before Christmas.
I ❤my go to tape! Also, I do a soft shut down for 3 days every 3 weeks. I am getting chemo and I could not ship during those 3 days. I am a real reseller…just like you!

I do a hard shut down whenever I feel I need to take a break. I do this for my mental health. I am not a full-time reseller, but I do depend on my eBay funds a lot. For example, we haven’t been on vacation in 10 years and we are taking one this year because I saved my funds from eBay.

I am a full-time reseller, we soft close our store at lease twice a year for 2 weeks at a time. We drive from Ny to FL twice a year once in May and once in October. We still make sales. It is absolutely possible to be. a "real" reseller and shut down your store for a bit. What it comes down to is how you budget your money to be able to do that!

925 Go 2 tape giveaway. Love your channels.have learned so much. Yesteryear Lane. Had to take 2 months off this last summer for a 3 week hospital stay. Was able to put my shop on pause while in the hospital. All back up and running since September.
925 - Amazon FBA allows us to keep selling while we are unavailable to ship, however we do a soft close on eBay occasionally when we are traveling.

I’ve had quite a few glitches with EBay, a major one, I called customer service to ask what I could do to get sales and I found it strange that no one was even looking at my items and she said well the first thing is to list more items, I said I list everyday! She said well you only have 4 items in your store, try adding more inventory 😂😂😂. I had 600 items in my store! I was told it was a glitch, another issue, was promoted listing, I was told to promote, well I promote everything! They seemed to have fixed it and that’s all I wanted. Obviously there are going to be issues, as long as they fix it, I’ve no problem!

I have not shut down my store in my first year of reselling. I'm tied to my farm and it keeps me around home and the family all year long. It's been a few years since we have had a vacation but will shut down the store when that time comes. 925 and my go2 tape.
925 My Go 2 Tape Thanks for the reminder of what it was like with the complainers at school. I taught for 30 years and did eBay on the side. Now it supplements my retirement thankfully. I do not miss the complainers.
I soft shutdown my store this year for Christmas and New years. Surprisingly I still sold over 20 items which is good for me a part timer. I will also shutdown for early summer break. It was a good mental break.

Some people are just miserable people and aren't happy unless they're being rude or complaining about something. Close your store and go on vacation or to take time for yourself! Trust me, I'm 66 years old, my kids are grown, take your vacations with them while you can. You only have your kids for 18 summers if you're lucky. Love watching your videos!
