    As someone who received a master's in sports management and works in MLS, I would say that it's only as impactful as the connections you make in the program! It's who you know and how hard you chase, and most importantly how much you nurture your relationships.

      Alyssa, I am about to graduate this fall ‘22 with my Bachelors in BBA and concentration in sport management. I live here in San Antonio and there is a USL team here , San Antonio FC. I noticed there really isn’t many positions open in an organization like that. I have prior military experience as well. Is there more positions inside an MLS team and do I necessarily need to start at a sales position? Thanks for your time.

My name is Chayton, I am in my second semester in the University of Michigan Sport Management Program, Recently I have had my doubts, and I’ve thought this program wasn’t for me, but only because I don’t know what it would take to succeed in this field. This video gave me some insight into what I need to do. Thank you, this will help immensely.

    Thank you for the video. I've just graduated with a Bachelors degree of Sports Management at Victoria University here in Australia this year 2022. All I can say is, this program has gave me so much knowledge and new understanding, and sort of open up my mind to different areas within the Sports industry like sports and active recreation, programming for sport, sports inclusion and exclusion, marketing, coaching, human resource management, financial management, ethics in Sports, sociology of sports, leadership and management in sports, etc... Workload is okay as long as you are committed to it.

    IMO, any college degree is as useful as the amount of effort you're willing to put into it. Being said, I feel as though many sports management majors go into the degree because they enjoy watching/playing sports but don't think of the competitiveness of the industry and that everyone and their grandmothers enjoy sports. The reality is that this is a major where you need to truly stand out and most people simply aren't willing to put in that work.

      Sport management is great for people wanted to work in sport but don't know exactly what they would like to do yet. You will have classes in many different aspects of the industry and you will be able to learn what you like to do the best. You can then start to focus in on that career path. I recommend researching the different careers in sport because there are all kinds of different opportunities.

    Have you developed any skills in college that you think will help in the future? (internships, interviews etc) and what skills do you think would be important for people like me going into college.

    • @trevorbackstrom
      @trevorbackstrom  4 года назад +7

      My internship definitely taught me the most of anything I did in college to learn about my career path. An internship will teach you most of the skills you need to be successful in that specific kind of role. I think the best "skill" to have going into college is to not be afraid to ask for help. It's kind of generic, but there are going to be some things you're great at, and others that you're not. Many of the most successful people are the ones who use the resources provided to them on campus. That could be anything from asking for help with writing papers or studying, or financial management and career planning. The other thing I will say is to take on more responsibility at college than just going to classes. It could be anything from joining a club and taking a leadership role in that, or finding a satisfying job to earn some money. I think doing this is important in order to build useful skills while at school.
