What was I thinking swatching 168 colors?!? Drawnby Watercolor set swatching, demo, and review

  • Hi friends! Artsy/Artme reached out to me and asked if I would like to try a new set of watercolors, since I have always been happy with their novelty fan style palettes amzn.to/3RNBJhj in the past I decided to give it a try. This is a long video, and my impression of these paints changes from the swatching to the loose rose demo and finally the landscape painting. I think these paints are best suited to brush lettering and calligraphy artists where having a large array of mixed colors, including opaque pearl colors, would be ideal and the viscosity of the paint would be a benefit.
Drawnby168 color paint set on Amazon: amzn.to/3xB5fju
*Note, I'm pretty sure this is the same set Grabie sells for 2x the price!
    Pros:
    Price (18 cents per color)
    Colors are vibrant
Variety of colors (Standard, neon, pastel, metallic)
The included waterbrushes, pencil and eraser and nice
    Comes with a swatch card
Non toxic conforms to the ASTM
    Cons
Many of the paints have a gritty speckly sludge that settles out in wet washes, though it is not apparent when used at mass tone
The paints stained the plastic palette badly, I think they are using food and cosmetic-grade dyes rather than artist-grade dyes.
There is no Ultramarine blue which is an essential color in my opinion
Bottom line: The price per color is low but for the total cost of this set you can purchase much nicer paint if you wish to create watercolor paintings. For instance, the 36 set of Pretty Excellent (Meiliang) watercolor is less and it will serve you much better: amzn.to/3VAc2ly In my opinion if you want to paint well in watercolors it is better to have fewer, better quality watercolors. I do this this paint would be excellent for brush lettering artists because the consistency would be great on cardstock and envelopes and the metallic colors are opaque for fancy lettering on dark envelopes. I might actually keep this set for that use only. If you are interested in the Drawnby 168 watercolor set you can find it here: amzn.to/45FKIHb

There is something so relaxing watching swatching.

Definitely a fair review. One thing I’ve realized is that in my pursuit of trying to save money and buying less expensive art supplies, I have bought SO many questionable supplies and spent more then if I went with one well reviewed professional art supply. I’ve really tried to stop myself and ask if I really need something and is it a wise choice. You mirrored my thoughts when you suggested getting the Pretty Excellent watercolors instead. I love mine and think it’s one of the best values in art supplies out there.

Hullo Lindsay, I believe that this set is put together for crafters who are not interested in mixing colors very much. You do mention calligraphy and inking practice and for that purpose, I would agree. HOWEVER, I have stopped using bargain paints or mediums. I visited my Aunt and she has a postcard I sent her. It is a sketchy version of her house situated on her street. She had it professionally framed and it still was a little faded. I offered to replace it with a full sized painting, she said sure but she was keeping her treasured gift! You never know when the “throw-away” art piece will become a treasure, so use your best supplies even when creating the practice pieces or the throw-away postcards you never know when they will comeback to haunt you! ARTISTS Beware of those cost cutting opportunities for you never know when that one piece will make it into the future as the example of your art journey to a future you never predicted, nor expected.

Best review format yet! Great video! And I don't believe you are being too harsh at all. As soon as I saw those paints- they all kind of look the same- I knew they were gonna be the same opaque, gritty, dull paints in all those same shaped sets. The major problem with those sets is some artists, who don't specialize in watercolors, get it for free and swatch them out and leave great reviews for it, mostly bc they don't know what poor watercolors look like. So beginners interested in learning watercolors buy the set and either think watercoloring isn't for them or they learn on poor quality watercolors making advancing and transitioning to better watercolor confusing and shocking...These large sets that all look the same are a huge waste of money in my opinion. So Lindsay when you make a real review of these paints I just feel so thankful there is someone honest and true out there spreading the word:) so please don't ever feel bad for your "harsh" reviews. BC, you are right it's important we know the truth from a professional watercolor artist perspective! We appreciate you and what you do Lindsay, please never change!! ❤❤

I think they'll be perfect for coloring books. If you put a layer of some kind of sealant down first to keep the paper from warping, it is so much easier to color with paint than with colored pencils. I like them especially when my hands are sore from nerve & arthritis issues. It's not too hard to take these in the car either and they weight so much less than the same number of colored pencils.

Wanted to look into some possible translation error with my little chinese knowledge, the only think i could say is that the chinese first charachter for pizza 比薩 has the radical that's also in the word purple 紫色 (the top of the first character) and also both second characters have similar pronunciation (sà and sè). Going by this my explination would be some automatic translator with no human supervision that mixed up come charachters, or said human didn't know much english, which is unlikely given most of the coherent names 🤔

I always carry a small travel blacklight flashlight, you will know right off the bat if something is hidden in your paint, and if it will be lightfast barring Daniel Smith Manganese blue, it does glow but it is lightfast according to Kim krick. I as an adult love Uv reactive colors too, many florals are flourescent IRL so u can layer a flourescent color on bottom or top and you'll get a color closer to the truth. From the way you make Maine sound its not very bright and colorful like spring and summer in Indiana lake country. I find our greens to be very blue compared to what you say you see up there lol. Unless we have a drought, thats when the colors seem to go yellow then 🍊 🟠 . But when the grass n 🌳 are healthy the tend towards blue 💙. The pretty excellent paints to me are professional level but not artist grade and definitely not budget or a beginner level paint although they are beginner friendly. Because they are so well pigmented I am often tempted to use them in professional pieces. Because I live in Phoenix Arizona where they do so much of the artist grade light fast testing I'm going to run a light fast test on the pretty excellent and see how they hold up

In all honesty I could see buying these for a beginner exploring color or somebody who likes to work in coloring books with watercolor or children with supervision. However, for an artist who has some experience I wouldn't jump into these personally unless it's pure relief for Sketchbook work.

That said, it has Pretty good sports teams, but it's our "Land College;" agricultural degrees, 4-H and similar support for anything relating to Horticulture, Agriculture and rural needs.

Hi again Lindsay, So for Occupational Therapy, would you recommend the HIMI 112 color set of gouache?
I have to spend time practicing brush control & holding tools daily. I really like using cheap watercolors and some of the Mimik, Artify or Integria brushes you've reviewed to do that, because most of the projects are just trashed.(I missed your set too.)
To be honest, Sometimes I just don't have the mindset or interest in what I'm doing to bother mixing colors, but I know I have to get in my therapy time if I want to improve. So, if this paint is a bad idea, what would you recommend instead? I go though a lot of pigment sometimes & nothing is worth showing. Even coloring book pages are pretty pathetic really.
After watching to the end, Neither this set or the one from Grabie seem to be as good of an idea for using in coloring books, as I thought .
    Thanks

If you go through a lot of paint and lightfastness is not a concern the jelly gouache is the best bang for your buck but I prefer the quality of the annagoni set and it's cheaper than himi too. amzn.to/45VfJa4

I haven't found an annagoni set in stock yet. Last time I tried it was sold out. I'll check again today.
Stupidly, I found I didn't do any of the tutorials or classes I bought last year because the shakes are bothering me so much. I bought some better paper, hoping that would make the paint work better, but then it was too precious, so I haven't used them yet either. (I'm justtreezsgames on your tutorial pages.)

@@gertietheduck Thanks, but I'm not mobile so moving stuff isn't an option and I have plenty of space, for me the issue is that mixing and getting the consistencies I need or colors I want isn't always a possibility for me physically or emotionally. I am trying to overcome some disabilities that have just knocked all of that out of me. for now, I dabble my brushes and play with colors and watch a lot of RUclips as I recover. I have a set of Holbein gouache tubes, but I have to start at a kids level and go from there. Lord willing I will get back to who and what I was. Sometimes gimmicks are just a lot less threatening. If I'm just playing, then who cares if it looks right.

I have Paul Rubens metallics, the ones in the pink box, 48 I think. I switched them but haven't used them yet. I got them to paint my baby granddaughter some butterflies 🦋 and hummingbirds. I'd like to try the ones in the box with extra large pans, that look like the kuretake gansai tambi pans by Paul Ruben, but I haven't gotten those. I actually have some Dr Martin's bottles of watercolor paint that I put a metallic powder in that made a very vibrant and beautiful metallic paint, so I'd like to explore that further. Art is exponentially exciting and endlessly fascinating ✨️ and infinite, as long as we're breathing, and afterwards here it stands as a testament to our hearts and minds and passions, and to God who made us in His image, The Creator! What about the Paul Rubens black tubes of watercolor? I've heard good reviews on those.

Weird gritty flocculation on almot all of them and terrible mixing i just disliked them so much, i threrw everything away exc eot the tin and mixing palette and put my daniel smith half pans all in 1 big palette. The whole standard line fits in that tin!

I'm not sure I would trust these to be safe for children, at least not ones that could ingest them. Unfortunately you can't always trust that the safety labeling is true, these things get faked a lot on imported items. Big brands will do testing to make sure they are complying, but I see so many of these kind of palettes on Amazon that look all the same that I feel these could be white-label products. The people selling them might not know themselves what the factory really put in there.

I see no difference between these and the Artistro... I don't think you can trust the shinyness of the paints in the box to be an indicator for their quality on paper. This video is proof of that. These paints look horrible. I know not everyonec an afford better art supplies. But I'd recommend anyone to save up a bit longer and get better supplies. Any student grade watercolor set out there is better than these paints.

I wouldn't call you a B if you are reviewing a brand and being honest. A To each their own, right and B they want you to be honest bc that is what sells the brand. Or doesnt in thise. Id rather buy the sakura set of 24 than this, painting looks like a struggle, that should not be, certainly not for beginners. You want them to enjoy paint not having to fight it.
