I have been a RV owner for about 30 years so here's some advice.
1 there are RV junk yards out there. I'm sure you can scrounge around one to get stuff.
2 rethink the all electric stuff. Heat , refrigerator, and cooking will be huge power hogs. Your battery pack will have to be huge as in bigger then you want.
3 solar is easier then you think.
4 use solid state relays instead of solinoids, you'll thank me later.
5 new smart charger battery chargers are awsome.
6 not sure I would relay on just using your alternator to maintain your battery pack. Honda makes a nice small, quit generator.
7 use 12volt everything. Transformers eat up amp hours like nothing you`'ve seen.
8 led lights. They are cheap and don't use any amp hours
9 put a Cummins 12 valve in the bus.
10 back up cameras. One up high and one on each corner of the rear bumper.
11 add an airbag set up to the rear axle and while your at it get the biggest rear sway bar you can.
12 check your tires every time you go out at the first sign of cracking replace. They will dry rot. Wife had a blow out once. Was not pretty.
13 make sure if you use an awning that it is properly attached to the side.
14 widow shades. Please use window shades.
    15 have fun good luck

Just a correction to a list I otherwise largely agree with. While I am very much in the “run everything you can off 12VDC directly” (I am an amateur radio operator after all and we love 12VDC), inverters (or transformers) do not “eat up amp hours like nothing you’ve ever seen” to nearly the extent you may think. A typical inverter or transformer setup is going to be around 85-90% efficient at any sort of reasonable load (efficiency is worse only when there is virtually zero load), so running a load off of a 120VAC versus implementing the same at 12VDC will at worst be the difference between consuming 100Ah versus having used around 90Ah (about a 10% penalty)....and some of those efficiency losses are actually made up for by the reduced voltage drop (also a source of lost amp-hours) in your copper conductors while also being able to use much lighter, and cheaper, wiring at the higher voltage - large loads require very large copper conductors at 12VDC...in fact, to achieve the same minimal voltage drop at 12V as at 120V you would need a copper conductor with 10 times the cross sectional area (a.k.a circular mils) which can add considerable weight and expense versus the much lighter conductor requirements at 120V. What this means practically is that one only needs to over engineer capacity by about 10% to accommodate typical losses and you can recoup some of that added cost through the reduced cost of wiring using lighter, cheaper, gauge copper wiring as copper is not cheap. So there is some loss in efficiency and, thus, consumed amp-hours when using inverters to generate 120VAC but the losses are not astronomical.

You'd have to take into account the wheel well humps, resulting reduced roof clearance from having to raise the floor...I suppose one might raise the entire roof to the same height to compensate for that. But even then I don't think you'd have enough space to actually exit the vehicle after driving it inside, unless perhaps you had the left side wall swing up or extendable. Probably too much trouble for something you'd still have to crawl in and out of.

    • @JulioRodriguez-gn2ws

Hmm... I might start with the interior without cutting it at all, that way you could build the sleeping area to perfection and then cut it up.
Also for the car ramp, you should take a look whether or not these things have had adjustable air suspension as an option (like in stock delivery trucks like MB Actros). You could make the car hauler portion tip back by lifting the front to the max height while dropping the rear to the lowest it can go, which could reduce the ramp length - and if that side profile is like I think it is, could basically leave the rear to about 50 cm from the ground.

    Two ideas on the bus build;
    1) If you raise the roof of the bus keep in mind the height of places you might frequent like drive thrus, underpasses on the roads, etc.
    2) For the ramp idea, what if the ramp lowered but started right after the back wheels. Maybe half of it could retract like normal pull out ramps and the other half would be the hauler floor lowering in the back. That way the ramp doesn't fully extend out the back of the bus making it the length of Massachusetts since half of it is the floor of the hauler bus. Just a thought there and probably a crazy feet of engineering for a single person to do. I do see the exhaust goes all the way back but you wouldn't need it to go that far because you don't have any small sticky humans back there. It would only need to go as far as the back of your cabin area so it wouldn't get in the way of the lowering hauler floor idea.
I want to see bus build videos! I like watching your little crazy foreign car videos but I think I speak for a great majority in saying the bus would be something we can all more relate on since we see busses and car haulers almost daily and most Americans see Peugeots almost never. I think if you look at it as a means to do the little cars the bus build could drum up some great publicity for the channel.
I can't wait to see more on this. Best of luck!

As for the rear deck, I would suggest finding an old 3 car flatbed truck and mounting the bottom part of it onto the bus frame. You might need a power takeoff unit, but it's not impossible to find one considering Allison transmissions are designed with industrial applications in mind. Also, for the inside of the bus, I'd recommend a Dometic sleeper cabin HVAC system. It may cost more than a mini split air conditioner at a big box stores, but it'll last longer on the road, which balances the cost. Other than that, your plan is very well laid out, kudos to you.

    Folding rear roof:
    Make 4 or 5 metal U-shaped supports.
Build a track along the edge, and put the metal supports (with wheels) on the track.
Get a really strong, durable, and bendable canvas or other material, and hook it up with the metal supports.
You can also have a zipper-style door, like on most of those tent-style car garages.

Keep the engine. Possibly replace it with something stronger/better, a Detroit Diesel for example or a bigger Caterpillar. The retractable roof system can be had off the shelf. Look at a flat bed semi trailer. To reduce loading height, use air bags on the rear axle and motor home leveling jacks to lift the front. Also look at a " Power Dove Tail Trailer " This is a system where the back of the trailer lowers to form a ramp. . . . Lastly, changing the wheel base if needed is easy due to the straight frame rails, just unbolt the spring brackets, move everything and remake the drive shaft.

First things first, make sure that bus is up to snuff 100% mechanically. A lot of the reason school districts replace their buses is due to deferred maintenance or there might be a huge service coming up in the next few thousand miles. IE don't be surprised if it needs brakes, a suspension overhaul, new tires(check the date codes and speed rating) within the next 10k or 20k miles. Also fleet managers kind of know when engines or transmissions will fly apart, what year/miles that happens so they sell the buses before then. School bus miles are pretty hard miles too, constant stop/go, its not like a semi-truck where its turning a constant RPM on the highway 12 hours a day and you might come to a stop 10 times during that 12 hours.

So when you load/unload cars drop the rear suspension, raise the front and drop the rear half of the deck...Might be able to get away without needing a ramp off the back half. It would also retain most of the rigidity of the existing structure. Equally improbable plans, but hey, ho; two can play at that game! Thanks Robert.

Plus if you ever want to move a shipping container you're set.

It isn't available on all engines, but look into installing an optimized idle system. Basically when the batteries drop below a certain voltage, it will automatically start the engine, idle it for 90 minutes, shut it off, and repeat that cycle until you take the key out or start driving. Putting it in could be as simple as changing the settings on the existing ECM. Idling a big diesel engine overnight gets really expensive really fast.

  • @Stoney3K
    @Stoney3K 5 лет назад

I wouldn't chop the back of the bus off, instead, leave a large loading door at the rear so you can drive cars into it (instead of on it). This will keep them dry during transport, and more importantly, you would have all of the amenities you got in the RV section so the rear end can function as a mobile workshop.
Also, I'd be very cautious of the cantilever behind the rear wheels when you're loading up big loads, so either lower the back section entirely (which I guess is possible if the bus is FWD) or have some supports you can raise or lower when you're loading up cars to move.

Make the whole deck tilt, from the cabin portion backwards, with the fulcrum a little more to the rear, so the front part is heavier to keep the thing level on its own. The tilt mechanism can be two posts (maybe a butchered screw-type car lift from a repair shop) right behind the cabin.
