Lens Spanner Wrench Project

  • I bought a vintage camera lens (Helios 44-2) that was cheap due to oil on the aperture blades. To get to the blades you need to remove a retaining ring, which could probably be done with a small screwdriver, but risks damaging the lens/retaining ring. I'd seen lens spanners for sale but most tended to have mixed reviews, so decided to make my own.
Mix of milling and lathe work. Most critical dimension being the distance between the holes for the cross members.

Nice work Paul! Hope that lens continues to have issues so the tool gets plenty of use! :-)

Thanks Dan! Think this lens will be OK for a while, but have more on order that will likely need some TLC!

Hey Paul, would you consider making one for sale?

Hi Max, bit too busy with other projects and stuff at the moment. You can buy them online though 👍

Yeah, I own a bunch as I work on lenses a lot, I have most of the ones available online and a lot of vintage ones, so it's almost like collecting at this point, and yours looked very nice and sturdy@@PaulsGarageProjects
