A classic reaction🚶🏾‍♂💔👩🏾! Soul Train dancers always get down to the funky sound 😉 lol. Walk Away From Love was released as the lead single from David Ruffin's 1975 album: Who I Am. It was written by Charles Chipps. It was produced by Van McCoy. The backing vocals were performed by the Disco group: Faith, Hope & Charity. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart, #6 on the Dance Club chart and #9 on the Hot 100. The song’s lyrics tell a story of heartbreak and longing, as David Ruffin expresses his desire to move on from a relationship that has lost its spark. The song's lyrics paint a vivid picture of a man torn between his desire to hold on and his realization that it is time to let go.
The song was David Ruffin's only #1 R&B hit, and only one of two Top 10 Pop hits for David Ruffin on the Billboard Hot 100, the other being "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)", which also peaked at #9. The song was his only solo entry into the UK charts, where it was a Top 10 hit as well, and peaked at #10 in early 1976.
    Lyrics 🗒:
I'm gonna walk away from love
Gonna walk away, gonna walk away
I'm gonna walk away from love
Gonna walk away, gonna walk away
Gonna walk away, gonna walk away
    It's not that I don't love you
You know how much I do, huh
And it's not that I've found someone
To take the place of you
It's just to feel the feel with in me
Every time you touch my hand
And a dread that shakes my body
    That even I don't understand
So I'm leaving (I'm leaving, yes I am)
This time I'm playing it smart (I'm leaving, yes I am)
I'm gonna walk away from love (Walk away from love)
    Before love
    Breaks my heart
I'm gonna walk away from love
Gonna walk away, gonna walk away
Gonna walk away, gonna walk away
Ooh you're clinging to me tighter
Than you ever have before, I don't understand it
And I know it's gonna take everything I've got
To keep walking out the door
But those arms you've got around me
Will let me go some day
And I'd rather leave you holding on
    Than pushing me away
    You might also like

    David Ruffin Info 📰:
David Ruffin was born on January 18, 1941, in Whynot, Mississippi. He passed away on June 1, 1991, in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a Soul singer and musician most famous for his work as one of the lead singers of The Temptations (1964-1968) during the group's "Classic Five" period as it was later known. He was the lead voice on many Temptations' songs including: "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg". He later scored two Top 10 singles as a solo artist: "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)" and "Walk Away From Love."
Known for his unique raspy and anguished tenor vocals, David Ruffin was ranked as one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine in 2008 and again in 2023. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 for his work with The Temptations. Fellow Motown recording artist Marvin Gaye once said admiringly of David Ruffin that: "I heard [in his voice] a strength my own voice lacked".
David Ruffin began singing and touring at a very young age with his father and siblings in a Gospel group. Leaving home at 13 to pursue the ministry, it was David Ruffin's select showmanship that caught the eyes of some in the secular music industry. He then moved to Detroit, Michigan, and was signed to Anna Records in 1960 and then Check-Mate Records in 1961. David Ruffin didn't have hits with either record label, but they were good showcases for his vocal ability and talent. In January 1964, David Ruffin became a member of The Temptations after founding member Elbridge "Al" Bryant was fired from the group. David Ruffin's first recording session with the group was January 9, 1964. The Temptations, who had yet to chart a hit, at Motown Records.
After joining the Temptations, David Ruffin initially sang backgrounds while the role of lead singer mostly alternated between Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams. The Temptations' hitless status changed in March of 1965 with the classic single: "My Girl", on which David Ruffin sang lead. The song stayed at #1 for eight weeks, and the rest is history. The follow-ups to the song: "My Girl" were also extremely successful singles, and included the David Ruffin-led hits: "It's Growing" (1965), "Since I Lost My Baby" (1965), "My Baby" (1965), "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" (1966), "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" (1966), "(I Know) I'm Losing You" (1966), "All I Need" (1967), "(Loneliness Made Me Realize) It's You That I Need" (1967), "I Wish It Would Rain" (1967) and "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)" (1968). David Ruffin also shared lead vocals on the group's 1967 hit single: "You're My Everything", with Eddie Kendricks.
The same showmanship that brought David Ruffin into the R&B industry caught the attention of fans around the world. His stage performance was dynamic. His dramatic hand gestures and slipping out of chorus to fall to his knees wasn't all this tall, slender man wearing black-framed glasses could do. His voice proved to be powerful, as he went on to sing lead on Temptations hits that brought joy and happiness in the turbulent times of the 1960s. These times also proved to be turbulent for the group, however. Tensions arose when David Ruffin asked for billing before the group, a practice common among vocal groups of the time. Not only did David Ruffin not get his name above the group's, but he was dismissed from the group in 1968.
In October 1968, David Ruffin filed suit against Motown Records, seeking a release from the label and an accounting of his money. Motown Records counter-sued to keep the singer from leaving the record label and eventually the case was settled. The settlement required David Ruffin to remain with Motown Records to finish out his initial contract as David Ruffin joined Motown as a solo artist and always had a separate contract from the other Temptations, which some felt caused a lot of the in-fighting within the group.
Still being under contract at Motown Records, though, and his solo career got off to a promising start with the ballad: "My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me"). Subsequent releases failed, however, as did duets with his brother Jimmy Ruffin. Few of the songs charted and he blamed Motown Records for not properly promoting his music.
After leaving Motown Records in 1977, David Ruffin recorded for Warner Bros Records, releasing the albums: So Soon We Change (1979) and Gentleman Ruffin (1980). He later signed with RCA Records, accompanied by former Temptations colleague Eddie Kendricks, who chose to rekindle their friendship when Eddie Kendricks himself started experiencing problems with The Temptations.
In 1982, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks re-joined the Temptations for the recording of their album: Reunion (1982), and a tour to promote the album. The album included the R&B hit: "Standing On The Top", with Rick James. The reunion tour was short-lived, however, as David Ruffin started to miss shows as a result of his drug addiction, leading the group to be fined thousands of dollars. Otis Williams fired David Ruffin from the group for the second and final time along with Eddie Kendricks, whose voice was weakened due to heavy cigarette smoking, by Christmas 1982.
David Ruffin started touring with Eddie Kendricks as a duo act in 1985. That year, longtime Temptations fans Hall & Oates teamed up with David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick to perform at the re-opening of the Apollo Theater in New York. Their performance was released as a successful live album and single. The four singers also sang a medley of Temptations hits at Live Aid on July 13, 1985. In 1985, a live medley of the song: "The Way You Do The Things You Do" and "My Girl", was released by Hall & Oates featuring David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick. It reached #20 on the Hot 100, #12 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #40 on the R&B chart. The single earned David Ruffin his first and only Grammy nomination. The two duos fell out, allegedly due to Daryl Hall's objections to David Ruffin's heavy drug use.
In 1987, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks recorded an album together: Ruffin & Kendrick, which produced the singles: "I Couldn't Believe It" (#14 R&B, #48 Adult Contemporary) and "One More For The Lonely Hearts Club" (#43 R&B).
In 1989, The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Temptations in 1989, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendrick and Dennis Edwards began touring and recording as "Ruffin/Kendrick/Edwards: Former Leads Of The Temptations". In 1991, they completed a successful month-long tour of England which grossed nearly $300,000. At the time of David Ruffin's passing the trio were planning another European tour. David Ruffin had also finished recording the single: "Hurt The One You Love", for Motorcity Records.

      David Ruffin Passing 🙏🏾:
After completing a successful month-long tour of England with Eddie Kendricks and David Edwards, David Ruffin passed away on June 1, 1991, from an accidental drug overdose. He had reportedly collapsed at a West Philadelphia drug house, where he had gone with his friend Donald Brown, according to authorities. Donald Brown then drove David Ruffin to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was declared deceased at 3:55 am that morning from "an adverse reaction to drugs (cocaine)" after emergency room personnel spent almost an hour attempting to revive him.
The Associated Press reported that David Ruffin and a man named William Nowell split ten vials of cocaine inside of William Nowell's West Philadelphia home hours before he died. Although the cause of death was ruled an accident, David Ruffin's family and friends suspected foul play, claiming that a money belt containing $40,000 was missing from his body. However, his girlfriend at the time, Diane Showers, was not surprised when she was informed of his passing. "When David had a lot of money, he would be able to do things that he wanted to do", she said.
In The Temptations television miniseries, David Ruffin's beaten body is depicted as being dumped in the street in front of a hospital where he passes away. It was also stated in the miniseries that his body remained unclaimed in a morgue for a week after his death. As a result, David Ruffin's estate filed suit against NBC and other major players involved in the making of the series, claiming defamation. According to the plaintiffs in the case, David Ruffin was actually taken to the hospital by a limousine and was escorted to the waiting area by his driver, who informed the attendants of his identity. David Ruffin's children further stated that his body was claimed by one of them within a few days of his death. David Ruffin's estate lost the lawsuit, and the ruling against it was upheld on appeal.
David Ruffin's funeral was held at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit. Surviving members of the Temptations sang the song: "My Girl". Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin also sang at the funeral. Michael Jackson volunteered to pay for the funeral expenses, but did not attend the service. Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Daryl Hall and John Oates, Diana Ross, The Spinners, and Martha Reeves And The Vandellas sent floral arrangements.
David Ruffin was laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.

The greatest singer of all time and it's not even close in my opinion.
I once heard someone say " if there was ever a greater singer than David Ruffin then they must've existed before humans found a way to record music."

I agree he was great but everyone has their opinion. Other great singers were Teddy Pendergrass, Luther Vandross, Levi Stubbs (lead singer of the Four Tops), Barry White, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and going back to the late 50's/early 60's, one of the smoothest most romantic voices ever was Tommy Edwards with his huge hit It's All in the Game and many other songs...and I guess we cannot forget Elvis. On the female side I would vote for Celine Dion although many like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin and going way back to the 50's, one of the strongest R&B voices was from Lavern Baker and her great hit Jim Dandy. One my fave female voices from the late 50's was Dinah Washington and her classic What A Difference A Day Makes and Etta James had a unique beautiful voice. A beautiful 60's country and crossover voice was that of Patsy Cline whose life was cut way too short by an accident. If you do not know some of these, please check them out on RUclips and let me know what you think. PS...I would also add Ronnie Spector (lead of the Ronettes) and Gladys Knight and the incredible Karen Carpenter and the amazing Brenda Lee plus who can forget the high energy rock and roll legend Chuck Berry?

Yes I've heard all of them. I love Jackie Wilson by the way as well as Otis Redding, Bobby Bland, Michael Jackson, Phyllis Hyman, Frankie Lymon and many others. I've been listening to and collecting music for years and I've heard many great singers but there's something about the uniqueness of David's voice and his vocal range is unmatched.

@@dreamatchwrestling Thx...not a big fan of Michael Jackson and did not know Ms. Hyman but now have checked her out and see that she was great and gorgeous in her early career but had many personal problems and her life did not end well. Sadly the same can be said about David Ruffin and his addiction to drugs which in the end killed him.

    Ok, Sheray.
(LONELINESS MADE ME REALIZE) IT'S YOU THAT I NEED is my favorite vocal by David Ruffin in his time with the Temptations. It really showcased his range and emotional depth that filled the heart of this particular song.
    PSYCHEDELIC SHACK,
    BALL OF CONFUSION,
SUPERSTAR (REMEMBER WHO YOUR REAL FRIENDS ARE),
and their biggest hit, PAPA WAS A ROLLING STONE, are waiting to fill your ears. Keep going and enjoy

I had to go google what note David at that one point, it was a B5, maybe higher if this is a completely live performance, because he could go up to a G#6! (Whistle register) (so in simple terms: he hit a really high note)
