First thing in the sound is the player. Swen (the player in this vid) clearly is a great player, as well as a great craftsman. Second component is the skins. I’ve equipped one of my LP drums with one of his pre mounted heads, and it changed the drum. It used to sound OK, but had mismatched overtones. I had to severely limit the tuning range of the drum to attempt to minimize the issue. The Manito steer skin has eliminated the problem. The overtones are now inline with the fundamental tone, regardless of where I tune it. So the range of the drum has expanded significantly.
Hi. This is Swen. I handle the skins and PreMounted heads at Manito Percussion. I'm so glad you are enjoying the sound of your drum now. I need to let you know that Ryan 'Manito' Wendel builds the drums as well as performs for all videos. He's a much better player, and I'm comfortable engineering the recordings and editing videos.
beautiful. 2 Questions for you. Would you ever try your hand on bata drum set ?? Also would you ever experiment with different types of wood and skins from around the world (such as trees from africa, south america, asia, softs ones/hard ones, buffalo, ram, antelope, ox etc) ?

As great as the drums sound done be deceived…. a lot of it has to do with the guy playing 😅 (i.e they may not sound exactly like that when you get them home 😉)
No deception taking place here. We do business in a transparent and sustainable fashion. Manito Percussion is an independent custom hand drum workshop located in lush Athens, Georgia. We specialize in solid shell congas, bongos, bata, bombas, djembes and other drums. We also offer our custom stainless steel hardware, a variety of skins for drums, and PreMounted drum heads. We unite art and science to create instruments that speak to the ears, eyes and hands. Each solid shell drum is precision handcrafted from sustainably harvested, local hardwood logs. Our designs marry art, physics of sound creation, environmental responsibility and the natural beauty that only solid shells can offer. We believe beautiful music should exist in harmony with nature. We focus on creating the purest tones possible. Whether it’s our skins, PreMounted heads, or in designing and crafting our own solid shell drums, we spare no expense or effort to bring the finest tonal experience to your drumming life. The insides of our congas and bombas are shaped with features to perfect the tones as well as to add a great deal of strength to the shell. From the bearing edge with its built in alma, to the textures and ridges which remove any bad overtones, to the Venturi shaped volume and bass boosting sound hole, every aspect of the resonating chamber is painstakingly sculpted for the sweetest tones possible! We offer custom 304 stainless steel crowns, flesh hoops, tuning lugs, side plates and lug extenders to complete your own drum projects. Our hardware is not only superior in strength, but also craftsmanship and lustre. Global relationships have allowed us to source the finest variety of skins. Our suppliers are keen and willing to adapt their clean, natural fleshing processes to suit the needs of our ever expanding drumming community. We focus on proper consistency of drum heads relative to the drum and very smooth playing surfaces. The results are clear tones, minimal overtone, volume, sustained open tones, well pronounced bass tones and crisp slaps. The range and quality of these skins have proven to excel in live and studio settings.
@@manitopercussion8451 Lol… I’m not claiming they aren’t excellent quality instruments 👍. I used to run a percussion shop and we definitely stocked Menil gear… love it. Just pointing out the demonstrator is a good player. Not everyone will get those conga’s sounding like that. I once sold a pair of congas to a customer and they tried to return them because they didn’t sound the same way they did in the store!!! (i.e when they took them home they actually didn’t know how to play and the congas “didn’t sound good). That dude is a good player. He would sound good on 3 - 5 gallon buckets
