This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I lost my friend Joel two years ago. That pain is still fresh. Ren is an amazing artist. His ability to weave words together that evoke such emotion, is just incredible.
Joe died just before Ren got sick, really, really sick. There's a video he posted from that time and you can tell he's struggling, he thinks he's going to die and he's losing hope. When you watch that, and you hear these words it's hard not to tie Ren's survival to Joe. Ren knew what the loss felt like, so he kept fighting even though he was in so much pain. Ren fought for years before things turned around. I really think Joe saved Ren and together they make amazing music.
That moment when you are breathing in and out in syncopation. Slays me for all the right reasons. Gives me hope for all the right reasons. No artist has ever pressed me or understood me more. I am grateful.
The one thing a lot of people haven't realized with the first part it wasn't just Joe that passed away, Callum took his life shortly after as well. I believe this song and the freckled angels went to joe family, Ren even explains on a podcast after he got the call, he ran to the bridge but it was too late, his friend Ben I believe also tried searching that night Joe took his life, the sad part is Ren was maybe only two minutes away when he got to the bridge, that's why he blames himself in the song by saying I wasn't there and I feel like a jerk. It's truly a sad song especially the ending
