Kanye surrounds himself with the best creatives and uses them to make his work great. He uses them for an album or two and then he moves on because as you said he’s a highly fickle creative. It’s what makes me hate him as a person but also makes him a multi decade legend

No one would be far along if they exclusively signed to vanity labels made by artists. All vanity labels still have distribution deals with the big labels like Universal, Epic, Arista, Island etc

There are so many examples of artists being horrible A&Rs and label heads. It's like the same skill they have for their craft and knowing what's hot doesn't translate to nurturing talent.
Most artists spend to much of their time being competitive to be able to alot time to nurture young talent.
Kanye made John Legend a star, boosted Cudi, made Sean a star, kickstarted Pusha’s solo career and rejuvenated the careers of Twista and Common.

@@thomasnelson5758 yeah I feel like everyone's scared to talk about the elephant in the room which is Dr. Dre shelving so much talent for the past 25 years only to collect checks from Eminem and 50. Kendrick almost got shelved but broke through because of TDE being there to push. Anderson Paak has two albums out but notice how it's not Interscope funded but rather 12 Tone Music and Aftermath. I feel like nothing drops exclusively on Aftermath. Look at every CD they've dropped since 97's Firm. There's always another label there to push the weight so the album gets released even Eminem. i'm not sure how much of a role Jimmy Iovine plays in this too but hell from what I've heard Dre is shelving Jesus Is King 2 after a year of hype.

This is so well put together. All in all, Kanye's too sporadic, and too manic as a personality to be a label-head. He can head up a label from the creative, content/music side, but should have others run the day-to-day affairs handling marketing, sample clearances and release dates.

You'd never get signed. Labels have a 3-album minimum and owning your masters is only held for artists who have already done numbers independently

And what we do know that Cudi in interviews during 09 was saying that Kanye helped him take things to the next level. Cudi contributed to 808s but I just don’t like how people make it out to seem like he wrote the majority of the album when he co-wrote 4 songs.

Yeah the teyanna taylor one really hurt me because I felt like her album was just so rushed, but that second album she released was amazing
TF lmao The Album was a bloated mess, KTSE was one of the best contemporary R&B records I heard in the last two years and big part of that was bc of Kanye's soul sampling and beatmaking. Teyana wants creative freedom but The Album she put out this year was just bloated tracklist and not nearly as potent as KTSE. There ain't a track on The Album that hits as Gonna Love Me, Issues/Hold On or Rose in Harlem. She might not have liked how it rolled out with the every Friday a new project all 7 tracks each but they were all consistent solid projects (maybe except Nasir)

KTSE by far the better album as the songs are just solid to Teyana’s voice. The Album got 23 songs and it doesn’t give me the same excitement and impact as KTSE.

Bro, the people that failed on G.O.O.D didn’t make good music, that’s it. Cudi and push still found success because they never depended in the label to make classics. They already made them before they met ye and being with ye only allowed them to make more.
That’s not 100 true teyana’s last two albums were great in fact the backlash concerning KTSE was coming from the fact that the original cut gotten rave reviews by both critics and fans and Pusha and Kanye decides to cut it and release a new one without teyana’s acknowledge. Big Sean has been making bomb ass music dating back to his mixtape days so no it has nothing to do with who make better music or not bc there are artists right now that are making above average or straight mediocre music and still popping, it has to do with the fact that Kanye west and Pusha T don’t know how to run a record label and are only good at managing when they are managing themselves

I was at the first official show with all his g.o.o.d. label artists. It was in Chicago at the Congress theater. Consequence, GLC, Common, John Legend, Sa-Ra, etc, and himself. Great label lineup.
I got to rap for Kanye and I was hoping to get signed. Greatest moment of my life
Big Sean had no singles out or NOTHING. But the media stay pushing negativity about Ye. Also I’m seeing people say Kanye didn’t elevate anyone on Good Music. He elevated John Legend; gave him his name, fought to get him a record deal, put him on Alicia Keys - You Don’t Know My Name as a background singer, directed the Ordinary People music video, produced 4 songs on John Legend’s first album and produced other songs on his later albums, he gave John Legend his first feature on Slum Village-Selfish, which Kanye produced and is also featured on. During the College Dropout era, he took John Legend with him during majority of his live performances. He made John Legend a star. He put him on Common- They Say, which Kanye produced and is featured on. He put him on Blame Game on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the album of the decade according to Billboard and Rolling Stone and also recently ranked 17th on their all time top 500 albums list. Go watch John Legend’s Verzuz battle vs Alicia Keys and see how many times he mentions Kanye and plays songs Kanye produced. Kanye most definitely elevated Big Sean in a major way and paved the way for him with the Graduation album, which opened doors for non-Gangsta rappers. Big Sean wouldn’t be where he is without Kanye. Sean says that all the time. Kanye put him in a Bape campaign back in 08 when Sean had no singles out. Took Sean with him wherever he went between 07-09. When Cudi signed with Kanye, he boosted Cudi and Man on the moon came out on Good Music, Kanye produced “Make Em Say” , “Sky might fall” and is the reason Common narrated that album. Cudi himself said Kanye helped take his career to the next level, go on RUclips and you will see. Kanye kickstarted Pusha T’s solo career by putting him on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy on Runaway & So Appalled and then had production on all of Pusha’s solo albums; My Name is My Name (2013) , King Push (2015) and then did the entire production on Daytona (2018) which was arguably hip hop album of the year by most people in hip hop. What Kanye struggled to do was balance his fashion challenges with Yeezy brand back in 2013 with Good Music, that’s why he made Pusha the president. Also Teyana Taylor was signed to Star Trak before Kanye and nothing really happened, Ye boosted Teyana’s career more than Pharrell did. Also Ye was balancing his solo career, good music and building Yeezy brand, something is likely to suffer when you’re doing all those things. But ignore all these facts and keep bashing Ye because it’s the popular thing to do now.

things aren’t perfect, ye’s a busy complicated guy. they knew what they were getting into, all had top notch product to show for it and complain cause they thought it would be different than being with a major. None of these artists are artists enough to do it on their own. And probably wouldn’t get signed to other majors.

Did you ever consider the fact the fact that most of them don’t understand most of the legal jargon that they put into music contracts that the vast majority of people without specific knowledge in that field let alone access to the information. Not to mention the fact that most of them are coming straight from the ghetto and are probably barely making it when they’re in that situation.

You don't want to sign a big advance because then record companies own you. the bigger the advance you get the higher percentage of your musical earnings you'll have to sign over. for instance instead of doing like an 80-20 or 70-30 split in your favor for the $15k advance on all your musical earnings like streams, sales, concerts, memorabilia, publishing, etc and you get to keep your masters but you have to sign for 3-5 albums..
now say you want that big advance so ok. for that $3 milli advance they'll want like a 70-30 deal in their favor but you might get to keep all your concert earnings, you get to keep your masters (but they'll get those back anyway when you can't pay them back the advance + expenses), and you have to sign to a 5 album deal. so now you owe the label that $3milli advance, 5 albums, they get most of your earnings, and in the end they'll get your masters too. all so you can shine when you first get signed.
