i do think the XM was the logical choice between the two if the were gonna put a 4 cylinder in the i16. But if the could maybe put an inline 6 or v8 in it, I think there would be a huge market for it.
The XM is the ugliest of all the ugly BMW's of the last decade. Everyone at BMW Styling needs to be fired and all the stylists that retired since 1990 rehired.
I remember watching a video from SB back in 2020 I believe. And she asked something along the lines of “Mercedes has the GT, where’s the competition from BMW?” And the spokesperson for BMW in that video told her something like “they’re cooking something up.” And then they released the XM and I was so confused. Seeing this it suddenly makes sense.

This is what happens when you let the accountants rule you, the customers are impressed by what the engineers do, not by the numbers the accountants and analyst what-have-you's come up with. Those guys are just there to ensure that the engineers keep doing what they love.
The head designer said that the prototype for this car was so close to production that it already took in consideration part sharing to reduce cost and mentioned as an example, the fact that the tail lights are taken off the X6
The thing about the XM is it may have bold styling, but as a product, it's utterly forgettable. People care more about the M2 all day, every day. And if BMW proceeded to release that supercar, it would've had to be called, M1, and it would've needed a PHEV or HEV inline 6. Enough ppl would spend 200k for that.
@@xelaander8429 Apple meet orange. See, this is what happens when pure numbers are compared divorced of any context. Agreed, instead of black I’d go for like green, blue, or white, but yeah the XM looks great imo I see what you mean though with all black, especially with the illuminated kidneys
Knowing how popular Hyundais vision N 74 concept was this design by BMW would’ve been super popular. I think the design alone combined with a good interior would’ve justified the price. They could also play into their WEC racing platform to get some more performance
Imo, The scraped M16 (if that's what it's called) looks great in the front - 9/10 If the back would be from this 6:43, it woukd be also a strong - 9/10
I don’t understand why BMW is known as the drivers brand out of the German trinity - Yet they are the only one that never had a supercar. Such a lost opportunity.
The XM doesn’t even properly fit into BMW’s lineup, aka why they’ve gone terribly, knowing they killed off a car for a segment they almost never touch and it was nearly finished is baffling.
BMW is facing some real internal demons right now, and need to get their act together before they get gutted into a soulless appliance maker like jaguar and Mercedes.
Well, that’s what they get for selling out for the money because no one’s gonna buy the XM like they thought and the brand will continue to deteriorate
V8 hybrid or V12 hybrid would have been the move. Flat plane crank and some steering feel would have made new fans of the brand. But no.... Gotta go SUV because money. It's like they forgot they were supposed to be making the ultimate driving machine
Everyone complains about the XM, imo it’s a cool car. Compared to the nonsense Mercedes G for example, a driving garage door… but people still buy it 😅🤷🏽♂️
i wish bmw would do a mid engine v8 hybrid instead. sadly for that price this would sit next to the new nsx. same price not selling and quickly cancelled. buyers over 150k dont want a 3 or 4 cylinder hybrid.
The XM was a completely failure I’ve only seen 3 of them on road near Miami. It is just a 6000 pounds X5M with a hybrid that is not even faster then a X5M.
You mean they deliberately chose the XM over this design. The XM was a disrespect to BMW heritage. I shouldn't have been about sales, it should have been about the soul of the company.
I think I'd get tired pretty quickly of the 'fashion' of the bright orange accents. IF the car cant present without 'screaming' color then it's trying too hard to be cool. Also... not a fan of the PIG NOSE grille
The M8 is already overpriced. BMW made the right decision to nix the i16 if they couldn't sell it for less than twice the M8 price. That's supercar territory. If you're going to market a supercar, then give it a supercar powertrain. Adding only one more cylinder to the engine compared to the i8 isn't much of an upgrade regardless of the electrification improvements. I'm ambivalent about the looks of both the concept and the 'production' version of the i16. The i8 just looks so much better than either one. It has aged *incredibly* well despite its issues. Unfortunately, it's terribly underpowered for its appearance. The XM is a horror story. Hideous, but admittedly, it is a far more logical choice financially over the i16 even if I'd prefer that it were the other way around.
I agree with what you say about HP, but disagree on the sweet spot. 560 HP seems a bit low, unless there are going to be multiple variants. If it’s going to be one, I say 700 to 800hp is the sweet spot!
Why are we pretending this is new? Didn't this production render come out right around the time the concept was being shown? Also, I prefer the concept over the production version - especially the way the greenhouse was resolved. The 3/4 window in the production render look like leftovers from the i8
im glad they scrapped it. it looks like a toy or a new mr2 competetitor. only price below m2 or around z4 could justify it. niether production or prototype look like money or look like speed but rather as a building or statement piece. all features are rather goofy and have no functionality to them. everyone loves porsches yet they don't play with shitty graphics and funny led lights, they look powerful and solid and most of all tangible.
The constant movements of the camera window are killing me I can't watch your videos for more than a minute anymore. Very amateurish and hard to watch.
You're right, the production version looks better than the concept car. That's a tradition that began with Tesla, their production version look better than their concept cars.
Both are vomit inducing and should be boycotted entirely. I will continue riding in my 98 Z3, not even a difficult choice. BMW hasn't made a decent looking car in nearly 20 years at this point, sad to see.
I can't understand what you're seeing when talking about the rear view of the car, that is the exact opposite of aesthetically pleasing. It is so obnoxiously over-engineered. The weird color splashes on the wheel area are insane and should never have left the design room. This car is the definition of ugly modern styling being called "good" when it's just plain ugly.
i do think the XM was the logical choice between the two if the were gonna put a 4 cylinder in the i16. But if the could maybe put an inline 6 or v8 in it, I think there would be a huge market for it.
