  • I'm on my way to do a voluntary work assignment for the German War Graves Commission. It takes three days to get to our destination in Klaipėda, Lithuania. In German, the city used to be called "Memel" and was an important city in the province of East Prussia before World War II. Yesterday I rode my motorbike 630 kilometers from Frankfurt/Main to Frankfurt/Oder. On the way I took the time to explore the land between the two cities called "Frankfurt".
Now my motorbike is off duty and I park it in a garage in Frankfurt/Oder for the duration of my work assignment in Lithuania. I continue my journey in a bus of the German army. They support every work assignment of the German War Graves Commission with vehicles and personnel. At eight o'clock in the morning we start our further eastward journey and cross the Oder. The journey goes smoothly and we reach our accommodation as planned. Now we are in Masuria in north-eastern Poland. I am very happy to be back here. Even better: We are in the same hotel (Park Hotel in Jędrychowo near Sorkwity) where I stayed two years ago during a motorcycle trip. For me, arriving in Masuria means coming back at the same time.
