As a country we shouldn't romanticize poverty. This film came out in 1982, it should be a moment of awakening to realize that nearly 4 decades later, we still see EXACTLY the same scenes on any train journey, that passes through the rural areas. Only when the villages start to prosper will India truly begin to shine again.
I used to have a beautiful german shorthaired pointer dog and she died a few years ago. I saw this film a few months after and for some reason I imagined my dog peacefully swaying to this music. Very peaceful and profound haha
Ha! I just commented on a friend's Facebook post about her planning a trip to India, and I said that whenver I think of travel in India, I imagine this very scene! Thanks for putting this up so that I could so easily illustrate what I was thinking of!
This part of the movie ... almost as much as the scene where he dies; or the scene where he tells the hindu man how to atone for killing a muslim child makes me cry like a friggin' baby. Why? No idea. This movie has just always hit me that way ... and the music in this scene is sooo beautiful.
I absolutely love this scene and Shankar's beautiful play of the sitar. Each time I see this it makes me want to make a bucket list and see as much of India by train - assuming this can still be done today lol
Mario Escalante Yes trains are still the best way to see India. And it isn't as unsafe as media in the west tends to portray us. Just take the precautions, you'll take anywhere in the world. We're extremely hospitable. Please come to India. It is a country like no other. Just a simple advice. Research and plan everything thoroughly beforehand. I promise you that no other country can give you as much as India can. Even a single lifetime isn't enough to see this vast, diverse nation. Please don't believe blindly in the stereotypes about India. We aren't all poor, dirty and unsafe. We have astonishingly large number of stunning sites. Please come, you are most welcome...
I just revisited this video after 10 years.. and i just happened to notice that the uploader put this up in the native aspect ratio without the added cinemascope bars at the top and bottom.. Amazed at hopw ahead of times he was.. or was it just a beautiful accident..? thank you !
There are a few heritage trains that run on steam locomotives (extremely luxurious, the most expensive train rides in the world, by far). But normal trains that run on electriciy and diesel offer luxury, non-luxury and third class options for a very very low price. the view of the country side is still pretty much the same in most places. the only steam train you can enjoy for less is the darjeeling himalayan toy train.. try it out.. fo ten cents, you'll experience a journey of a life time.
Gandhi was around and alive... The same time Hitler was around. One was for love and righteousness and the other for hate and power... As humans we have witnessed two extreme end of a human being within this two people. Moral of story :..... If focus enough anything is possible. Just be careful what u focus on.
yes it does and you'll pretty much find the locations like these only. The cities have changed in India, The villages are on some magical/political time travel thing. They are still the same, poor, destitute, not developed at all. Nonetheless, you're welcome to India :)

India is a indeed a magical place ... experience it before it slowly slips into the 21st century
Still it's magical. Especially rural areas❤.
Im from California and I worked in Kerala for almost 2 years back in 2002-2003. Some of the best times of my whole life.

This is a fantastic piece of music. I have just finished watching the movie (again) and these scenes always stay in my mind.

the background music is called "Discovery of India"
The song can be found on iTunes: Essential Ravi Shankar "Discovery Of India"
Already downloaded it and listened to it while driving my car into the sunset.
VegabondNRG THANK YOU!
something about the music in this movie that transports you to a different place you can feel your spirit ascending
It gets me reminded of Rudyard Kipling's stories.
India. A magical place.
