  • The invasive calcitrapa of the plant world, Goat's-head vines (Tribulus terrestris) are adapted to dry arid climates and the bane of summer fun in the West. It likes to grow on hiking paths and likely camping spots.
Local Idaho legend says that wardens at the old Idaho Penitentiary planted these weed in the fields surrounding the penitentiary to discourage inmates from escaping. I think that the rumor I just started about a conspiracy of veterinarians working in conjunction with bike inner tube manufactures is more likely.
The species is difficult to control because of the extremely long seed viability in the soil seed bank and the protective coating on the leaves and stems that make it resistant to herbicides. Manual labor paired with healthy native species to choke out growth is the best option for localized control.

Please read this post to add more info and help in your battle against these weeds!! We moved into a house that the previous owners did nothing with the property and puncture vines were everywhere (including in the “lawn” itself). After doing some research, I learned that each of the “pods” from 1 flower being pollinated can have usually about five seed packets (2 large prongs that resemble the goat’s head) and that each packet contains about 5 seeds. So just from one flower turning into a pod can result in about 25 seeds that can mature and germinate. Meaning, if you have 1 weed that has a lot of pods on it, you’re potentially looking at hundreds or even thousands of seeds that can germinate later. If that’s not bad enough, each of the goat head seed packets can be able to germinate for up to about 10 years! If you have large areas of ground covered in these weeds, you might want to invest in ordering puncture vine weevils. They only eat these weeds so they’re non-invasive, and they lay their eggs in the pods, so the beetles eat the weeds and their babies eat the seeds. They’ve been known to eradicate over 90% puncture vine weeds. If you only have them in small areas, then it really is a matter of as soon as you see one, pull it up and throw it away or toss it in a burn barrel. You can also use a propane torch and burn those little bastards back to hell! Avoid at all costs getting poked by the prongs! Not only does the puncture initially hurt, but the area where you got poked will feel like a gnarly bruise for a few days. I’d easily take stepping on a Lego vs one of those! I know this post is long, but anything that can help others battle these evil weeds, the better! Good luck!

Always say it such a shame that someone doesn't develop a thorn free seed, because they grow amazing in the desert and are pretty little plants!

It’s a medicinal plant. Absolutely wrong characterisation of it in this video.

Elaborate, I'm interested. I live in Colorado and concur with this evaluation. Bane of my bare feet. But something can be bitter and sweet, useful, annoying, or dangerous, or noxious at the same time. That's the beauty of nature.

@@shayeladshayelad2416 I dont know, Im still trying to find a video on how to harvest it. What ive heard is that the most potent parts are the spiky goatshead parts, you can also brew the whole plant, but Im unsure as to whether its better to dry it out first or to boil it all at once.

I've read that some people make a soup out of parts of them also. As far as I'm concerned, there are much easier ways to get any possible nutrients these nightmares may provide. All it takes is 1 rainy season in the desert and they will be growing EVERYWHERE there isn't grass or other plants growing. Even if you don't have the actual plants on your property, the wind blows the dried sticker seeds all over. They are extremely adept at propogating.
