The Beatles - Penny Lane

- The Beatles performing “Penny Lane.”
Two days after recording some overdubs for 'A Day In The Life', The Beatles spent the afternoon in East London at Angel Lane, Stratford, filming scenes for the video of 'Penny Lane' with Scandinavian director, Peter Goldmann.
Shortly after the East London shoot, Goldmann and The Beatles headed to Knole Park, the grounds of a stately home in Kent, to film scenes of the band horse-riding in the countryside. Around this time, Goldmann and his crew (but minus The Beatles) travelled to Liverpool to shoot the sequences near to Penny Lane.
A few days before filming started for 'Penny Lane', Goldmann shot a promo for 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. Both shoots presented a challenge for everyone involved owing to the Musicians' Union ban on any action that could be construed as miming. Despite these limitations, both the films Goldmann made were so innovative that neither would have looked out of place on MTV a decade and a half later.

Brings tears to my eyes. Not about individuals but about the whole phenom that a pop band singing love songs and light social commentary captured the hearts of the planet for a while.
Me too ❤
It brings tears to my eyes as well. Even having no connection to a mundane lane in a mundane UK town Paul made it seem magical. The Beatles had that magic. Strawberry Fields, Elenore Rigby as well heck the list is endless. They may have been a pop band as far as a label but they were so much more. Modern day poets might better fit.

I think it's a piccolo trumpet and it was hard for the musician to hit those high notes as they were out of range.

Wishing I'm hi skul again..
@@monichat The Trumpet player was David Mason who lived to the age of 85 and played on other Beatles songs such as "A Day In the Life" and "All You Need Is Love". It was actually Mason's playing of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with the English Chamber Orchestra which inspired the Beatles to get him to play on the recording.

Kinda crazy that this song written was written 60 years ago, and yet that Queen is still reigning in England.

Yo
The Queen of England is immortal. Lol!
They really were amazing. The way they went from major to minor keys - Help or She Loves You is another amazing example - or the way adding a 7th chord in the perfect spot - it sends chills up your spine.
I don't like to ''diss'' other popular musicians but the Beatles insinuated themselves into my heart like no others. There was an aura about them that nobody else matched.
I'm a huge music freak. I love Joni and Neil and Bob and Warren and new bands like the Baar Brothers and Sea Girls but for me there is still the Beatles and then there's everybody else.
I'd be honored if some Beatles fans would take a quick listen to my low-fi acoustic piano & vocal YT performances of BLACKBIRD and PENNY LANE in tribute to 2 of the many genius compositions written by Sir Paul McCartney. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and everybody stay safe.
They were already the most famous/ popular band in the world by the mid 60s, based upon their early success with their boy band rock n roll output. It seems too coincidental that they would then become the best band ever too. They had a high profile so were more influential than others for this reason when they started experimenting I reckon. Doesn't make them the best.
Hmm, you don't say?
@@pauls7803 When other great musicians gush over them I think nothing more needs to be said. In the words of Noel Gallagher from Oasis " They were the best and still are" And that was/is because of their unparalleled melodic genius and their experimentation in songs like " Tomorrow Never knows" for example.
" Lennon and McCartney are the greatest composers of the 20th century"----Leonard Bernstein classical music composer and conductor.

I think that's the same for all of us, JWL. Paul really had/has such a wonderful gift for sympathetically evoking the character and lives of people and their worlds/ the places they inhabit/ in a few simple, everyday words and phrases.
Think of Eleanor Rigby (and Father McKenzie), the characters in She's Leaving Home, Molly and Desmond in Obladi-Oblada - I'm sure others can add many more examples.

I was showing my kids all these different bands and the Beatles were the only ones that got their attention. There’s just something about them that resonates with most everyone. They were just meant to be.
'That something about them' is the songwriting and the way they recorded them...they knew how to make music...
blind critic Yes they are insanely talented I wasn’t trying to imply I didn’t know why 😉
@@blindcritic3309
There sense of humor, the charme of their voices, their personalities, even kids can feel this, like I did without understanding most of the words.
Understand, I was just trying to emphasize that it's their songs more than anything else about them that leads the way and keeps them relevant decades later
blind critic very true. Do you have a favorite Beatles song? Or album?
Can you imagine having the talent to write a song that good? The lyrics, the harmonies, the melody, the brass solo instrument breaks? And then doing it all over again tomorrow to create something new? I guess that's why they are the Beatles and we aren't. Not too shabby, boys.
Well said.
They were all classically trained Musicians with a diverse skillset and all of them played multiple instruments. That understanding of music in a band was rare back then for a pop band.
@@JonHop1None of them was classically trained
@tobismusicchannel3033 they were all classically trained other than Ringo, but Ringo did have exposure. Not sure what your definition of classically trained is, but all 3 of them took Classical music classes in grade school and High School. I'm proud of your daughter !
1:36 I love the movement that Ringo makes with his head, he looks like that person who goes to a party and tries to fit in 😂😂
I would like to see the entire video of John walking and see how many people notice that a Beatle is walking by.
Hands down my favorite song of all time. A timeless masterpiece. I can't count how many times I've listened to it to cheer me up when I'm down. Just beautiful.
When I think of the ultimate feel good songs I think of Penny Lane and Eleanor by the Turtles.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Paperback writer too
@@krowta2062what like MGK? Ew.
Agree 100%
*the song goes along with the years, forever not dead. This isn't just a song, it's a memory*
Excellent statement 👏
One of my favouverites of the Beatles, because of the happiness, the joyfulniss and other all positive sensations this beautifull song brings.
One of the finest masterpieces by the great Sir Paul.
Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
To call this band a classic is an understatement
"And the fireman rushes in from the pouring rain...Very strange!" Love that line.
I'd be honored if some Beatles fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of PENNY LANE and BLACKBIRD on my YT channel in tribute to 2 of the many genius compositions written by Sir Paul McCartney. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital enhancements. Thanks and RESPECT to the legends.
Pauls bass tone on this song is the holy grail in my opinion.
There aren't many songs that still blow me away more and more as the years pile up. I'm 70 and when I hear the Beatles they still blow me away and each time it gets better.
My late Dad's absolute favourite!! Him playing & singing on the piano is an absolute best memory... ESPECIALLY his face when it came to the modulation!!! x
My biggest flex is that I lived on Penny Lane for years😂😂
Respect
But did you live in strawberry field huh?
Oh yeah? well I got to do an abbey road picture and my grandma owns a paper that was signed by both Paul McCartney and George Harrison
@@raspberrycrowns9494 and i own paul mccartney

This is my first time actually listening to the Beatles and I feel like I've been living under a rock.
@Franz Liszt aww thanks 😊.
Welcome to our 50 year old fandom
Indeed, welcome😝
You've got a long way to go,from now dear.
And it is worth,i tell you,every step,every song... 🎸
Im genuinely exited for you to be some a real fan
..."beneath the blue suburban skies" is sheer poetry. And to that, an evergreen melody. So much seems to have come so easily to The Beatles. They're a miracle.
My favorite lyric is in the last verse…”and though she feels as if she’s in a play….she is anyway” Perfect!
Surely lyrics like this are common outside of the mainstream dross artists who sing about one topic only. Try listening to 10 seconds of any The Decemberists song for poetic lyrics.
@@pauls7803 If you want poetic lyrics aside from The Beatles, try Dylan/Springsteen/Knopfler/Simon. I think John's most poetic lyrics were either Strawberry Fields Forever or Across The Universe.
Their songs are all timeless and have the Magical Abilities to take you back to the best times of your life, once in a lifetime talent and Presence
This song is majestic ✨️
they make the most regular place in Liverpool sound 100 times more interesting
The horses help the situation
it isn’t all that great tbh but I’m still glad that I’m from Liverpool😂😂😂
Ebony M am from Liverpool and am very proud of are great city don’t matter were anyone is from these days there’s a war going on all over England
I'm from Liverpool too! I live near penny lane and for some reason im excited for when i go there next haha
I went there a few days ago. It was my first time in Liverpool and I walked for more than an hour just to get to Penny Lane... it is just a normal street but just the fact that The Beatles made a song about it is so great! I don't regret anything of that long walk to see Penny Lane, and I would do it again if I go back to Liverpool ;)
