  • Patagonia is a small town in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, situated at an elevation of over 4,000 feet between the Santa Rita and Patagonia Mountains, within the riparian corridor of Sonoita Creek. Known for its historical significance, the town was established in the mid-nineteenth century as a center for trade and supply to the surrounding mines and ranches. As the mines closed, Patagonia evolved into an artists' community and a tourist hot spot. Today it has a population of about 800 residents.
Situated approximately 18 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, the town of Patagonia is part of the region often referred to as the Sky Islands, alongside Sonoita and Elgin, recognized for their higher altitude and surrounding mountainous terrain.
There are different tales regarding the naming of the neighboring Patagonia Mountains. A popular belief is that the region was named by miners familiar with the renowned mountains in South America's Chile and Argentina. This narrative appeared quite credible when you observe the golden hillsides and grassy plains framed by the mountain summits.
