  • I demonstrate how to install a Simpson Strongtie HDU holdown bracket. I spent a lot of time searching for information about the proper way to install the HDU brackets so you don't have to. Based on what I was able to find on the Simpson Strongtie website, this is what I believe is the correct way to install the HDU holdown brackets. I am not an expert in the construction field, so I do not guarantee the information in this video is accurate.

Simpson vois their product specs if you impact drill them like that. Need to hand fit like you did, then 1/3 to 1/2 turn with tool. No impact drill is specified on the product sheet.

Engineering specs on the HDU14's that I have to install on current new construction shows 1/2" space underneath the hold-down. I've also installed 1" bolts into the concrete forms for the wall/stud-pack connection (may be overkill but I had the big bolts in my inventory.)

No impact gun on the nut. Finger tight plus 1/3 to 1/2 turn with a hand wrench. On your video the anchor bolt turned like ten degrees when you were impact driving that nut. You now need to reinstall the anchor.

Never heard of these but sounds like one of those things you don't notice but are glad they are there. Things are looking good! Great job!

Simpson spec shows only "preservative-treated barrier may be required". It means the HDU should not touch the pressure treated wood. That is all the purpose of the 'air gap". If you tighten the nuts enough, there is no reason it need an air gap to prevent the stud be lifted up. Sometimes it is easier to install the HDU higher. It is an option, not a requirement.

Placing the holdown bolt in foundation wall is critical for proper installation to stud attachment

doesn't look like the bolt is deep enough - the hold down needs to be very deep

The engineer must've thought the same thing because both corners on the north wall of the bedroom has one! 😂
