    Awesome videos, you are such a lucky man to be able to run the rivers in the video that you make. We really enjoy watching them because of the fantastic scenery, the point of view of the camera and you don't have never ending commentary. Thank you for your efforts in making these videos, you will never know how much joy, wonder and daydreams they instill on your viewers. Go down all the river that you can while you're young enough because when you get to my age, they will only be dreams. Thank you and we will be waiting for future videos .

      Hey thanks very much. Yes, there are some really nice rivers in the Rocky Mountains and it's foothills, and they are a pleasure to canoe. I appreciate the very kind comment!! I think I have a few good years left for canoe trips like this one, and have more than a few trips in mind. Thanks again, take care.

    "That's not how I wanted to run that Canyon." Best line of any of your films.
    You always look in control so I was worried when you tipped. But you handled it like the pro you are. Thanks for sharing a beautiful stretch.

      Hey thanks very much Robert. It was a bad mistake, and I earned that swim. The current slowed in the canyon, and there were a couple spots to get to shore near the end... thankfully. But all in all, it was a great trip, and I am very happy to have canoed this river. Thanks for watching, and the nice comment. Take care.

    Now that was a canoe trip. I watched you negotiate those squirrely angled waves at the 7 minute mark and how you were skirting the wrapper rocks missing them by millimeters all along. It had to catch up. Nice self rescue Nick, fantastic recovery and you picked a good spot to flip what with the river flattening out some though your choices of places to recover were very limited. Well done sir. Sure would my heart better if you had a partner to boat with on some of these trips. LOL Thanks for a fun trip.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  3 года назад +2

      Thanks BD. It was quite a trip indeed. Some nice rock gardens to navigate, it was a lot of fun. Oh yeah, it had to catch up... and I was overdue for a swim. It was a terrible line choice right after the ledge. I should have gone hard to river right, and slipped into the canyon. I thought I could slide into the corner, bounce off the pillow, and catch the current through the turn. Big mistake. Once I could see that the wave was not friendly, it was too late and I got pushed into it. Yes, the current was slow in the canyon, and some nice eddies to swim into near the exit. Having a fellow paddler would definitely be ideal, just have to find one willing to do these trips. Thanks for taking the time, appreciate the comments as always.

  • @nahanni2k

    a beautiful river, nice to see you paddling the very capable Mad River Canoe. An excellent choice in craft. Also good to see an experienced paddler keep his cool and his paddle after an upset. Shame society will probably insist that the river eventually be renamed.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  3 года назад +2

      Yes, I really love that canoe, and the river is beautiful. I was over-due for a swim, so why not find a scenic canyon to do it in, haha. Thankfully, the current was slow, and there were some big eddies near the exit.
      Unfortunately you are probably right, but I hope not. It is a great river, and the name is iconic. Thanks for the comment Doug, take care.

    I am new to watching your videos and was just commenting how this river was a lot more rowdy than other videos when you ended up going for a swim!
    As a huge geology nerd I definintely would have crashed a hundred times by then getting distracted by the amazing rock formations of that canyon, I am jealous but definitely not brave enough to follow you down this particular river!

      This was a challenging trip... in a very good way. The swim was avoidable. I made a bad read on that rapid and deserved to take that swim :)
      Funny you mention that... as I was paddling, I couldn't help but notice the interesting and beautiful rock formations. I kept thinking to myself that it would be a geologist's dream to explore these canyons. The scenery enhanced the trip, and made for some exciting paddling. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Kinda hard to find a place to upright the canoe there when you tipped. Looks like you had a good life jacket or maybe even scuba wet suit on ? I can't imagine that water being too warm. I haven't done any rivers in years, I think the last one was the French river in Ontario.

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  3 года назад

      Yeah, there were not any good places to upright the canoe, a couple big eddies near the end of the canyon were my only options. I had a good life jacket, and a dry-suit on... so the cold water didn't bother me. I've never been there, but it sounds like there are many great rivers in Ontario. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.

    Awesome ride! I enjoy all your content, I love hearing the river and your brief comments. I'm an old fart who does not require music. That run might be better in a creak kayak, have you ever tried them? Or are you a canoe dude only?

      Hey thanks very much Phil. Yeah the sound of water and waves is the best, no need for music. It was tough in an open canoe, I had to pull over many times to dump water out. I have never tried a kayak, but have full respect for what kayakers do. But yeah, I am only into canoes.

      Hello, and thanks very much. I have not paddled from Peers to Whitecourt yet, but I hope to in the next few years. As far as I know, it is a relaxed 100 km paddle. Apparently there is a "canyon" section about 2/3rds of the way, but it does not sound like it would be anything dangerous. I can't imagine there would be any rapids in the whole trip. I hope that helps, and thank you for the comment.

      Yes, it is a bit of a hike to get there. It was a bad line I ran going into the corner, I should have moved quick to river right. My hands were both firmly gripping my paddle as the canoe turned over. Thanks for watching Bob.

      @@nickharland3795 just kidding--the two best tandems I had were of different lengths. A Chestnut Leader, which was their 18-foot down river race boat. Wood-canvas in the correct grey that with an outstanding hull speed could also turn. The design dates back to around 1905. Also made in 17 and 16-foot lengths, but I can't recall their names. The other was the Dagger Caption--an outstanding tandem boat for competition or just fun--14 feet long. That with semi-hard chines turned wonderfully.
      Sigh,

      The Chestnut sounds like a great canoe. A beautiful boat I'm sure. I've never paddled a Dagger, but they sound like great canoes too. This Mad River M.E. is the only WW canoe I've ever paddled, so I have nothing to compare, but it is a lot of fun to paddle. Cheers.

      @@nickharland3795 I did not get into WW until I was 48, and enjoyed a little more than twenty years. I was about 80 percent of the paddler that I would have liked to have been. At 14-feet long and with fairly hard chines it controlled wonderfully well--for me up Class 3--with not a strong bow paddler. You should try one. Some rig them so they can be paddled solo as well--sort of convertible saddle.

    I was glued to this. Nice scenery! There is no way that water in Jasper isn't ice cold. Did you stop to warm up? Thanks for filming.

      Couldn't see to many mountains due to smoke, but there is nice scenery near the river. Lots of interesting rock formations. It is cold water for sure, but not as cold as the true glacial rivers. I had a dry-suit on, so it was not bad during the swim. And since I was unable to bring the canoe on dry land, I was plenty warm after bailing a couple hundred liters of water:). Thanks for watching.

    Nick what did it take/ how did you get your canoe to the put in? Is there a hiking trail or a road?

    • @nickharland3795
      @nickharland3795  3 года назад +1

      It is a bit of work getting to the put-in. About 27 km hiking and a couple nights camping to get there. The trail is quite good, but it takes time. It is an old road, getting overgrown but good for hiking and carting a canoe.

      @@nickharland3795 Cool! I only just now finished watching this whole video, glad you’re alright after that swim. What a great trip, truly a wild river in every aspect. Have you invested in a sat messaging unit, if so what did you buy?

      Yeah it is an awesome river!! It was a bad misread on my part, I deserved that swim. I do not have a satellite phone or anything like. I just try and be as safe as I can, and maybe a little luck:)
