its really bold to go in with a harmony but often find myself singing a harmony rather than the actual melody.. really like this tutorial.. happy christmas dude!
I never sang "wish you a merry christmas" that much, repeating again and again while increasing the volume a bit each time I'm a complete amateur concerning harmony, i wonder why it's easier to find a third or a fifth just for a final note. Singing a whole different melody is SO HARD Thanks for the vid, i'll keep practicing !
So in the first example... can you talk about when you make decisions like when to stay on a note... vs when/how to decide to follow parallel harmony more? Thanks!
For most of these, I'm after pulling out a new emotion from tunes that are deeply familiar or creating contrast to break the repetitious nature that's built into these carols. So for Silent Night, the lead has this two-part A A B B' sub-phrase structure. We build variation at the skeletal level by creating a three-part countermelody with that oblique motion moment you're asking about. We also build stress on the line "all is calm" by hammering the tension point on 4. Reshapes the meaning of the lyric to feel something like the calm before the storm--ratcheting up a little anticipation--rather than wallowing in pure serenity. Also makes the release into "all is bright" feel more satisfying by the build-up.

Simply great!
Any tips on how not to get distracted by the melody and sing something halfway in between?
