The Star Spangled Banner is played on its KCBR-TV17 Des Moines sign-on and sign-off, but it is different from the other. The singing vocal version is in the sign-on, and the instrumental version is in the sign-off. This station is now KDSM-TV Fox 17, and is now owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group.
The Station began life as The Hawkeye State's 1st Independent Station since its start-up on 3/14/1983.Also it was the 1st UHF Station in the Des Moines-Ames Market.
Actually, it sputtered to life at 3:27 P.M. on March 7, 1983. I was working there at the time. That was the time and date on a "congratulations" letter from one of the owners. The station continued broadcasting, with March 14 called the official first day of business.
+Kurt Kauffman Actually there was a previous UHF station in DSM using Ch. 17, but it was before my time. KGTV went on the air in 1953 as an affiliate of ABC and DuMont. It died in 1955 with the sign-on of KRNT, taking CBS, and the death of the DuMont network, leaving WOI as one of the Midwest's worst ABC stations.
CBR stood for Carl,Bill,Ray.The Station executives at the time of the Start-Up on 3/14/1983.Saw it on Wikipedia many times recently.
Surprising that Iowa didn't have an independent UHF station until the early 1980s. Oklahoma City had three at that time, plus TBN on channel 14.
