Good video. I was the quality control person for the 1968 & 1969 Vietnam era M-1 helmets (#6521) made by Dana Corporation at their Trenton, Michigan, factory. When I worked there both the materials and the manufacturing process were classified. From what I understand that info is now in the public domain.
Thanks for sharing that information from the U.K. I bought an M1 today which has heat stamp 1023A The A has the low cross bar. It's a front seam swivel bale with textured finish & where the paint has chipped off it looks like stainless steel. The liner is stamped 26 with a shield above that with the letter F in it. The cradle & chin strap are fragile khaki & starting to fray. It cost £130 thank's to your video's i feel happy that it's a WWII helmet.
Great video as always. I personally have a totally Vietnam era refurbished M1 in my collection, it's a 500 range heat stamp. I thought it was interesting as it most likely was converted to swivel bail during Vietnam. Meaning it's a total mix of different era parts!
@@JonBoyMilitaria it's a really nice example of a post war refurb. I have a video about it and another shell I picked up the same day at an antique store. The surprising thing about the entire shell is that there's no rust, or stress cracks either.
@@snuffypaden9033 They were steel up until Kevlar was designed. I actually have a Kevlar from 1984. The kevlar helmets were dated inthr crown. There will be a 2 digit number inside. For example: 84, 86, 88...
I have one sitting next to me that is kind of an enigma. The shell stamping is late WWII. The ring suggests Korean war era. The liner, honestly I think they just jammed it in to the shell, is Vietnam era. So pretty much I'm going to be looking for WWII liner,, webbing, and chin strap
Have a WW2 helmet, fixed, from G-pa's brother in merchant marines. Liner in good shape , lost front leather front strap playing with it as a kid. Sits on fridge for earthquake prep. Not gonna get a dent in MY dome. Has a 60's reversible cover and band on it, one of my family treasures, my dads football helmet has resin fiber top ,similar in construction of liner .thnx for information on M1 liner & pot. Nice job man , i collect M1's and living in Melbourne Australia they are tough to find as we did not use them till Vietnam, you can find the Aussie made M 1's mainly 1970's

John, Love the videos- by far the most informational ones I have seen on this site. I’ve got to ask how much you are willing to spend on these helmets? At flea markets, I’ve been asked to pay $100 on a rear seam manganese rim, which I did not want to spend. What do you think a fair price on any of these particular helmets in your video would be? Additionally, I’ve searched countless flea markets, antique stores, yard sales, sites, etc., anywhere else you’d recommend looking? Keep up the great videos, we appreciate them a lot
Thank you for your support. I appreciate it. Honestly, I wouldn't pay $100 myself. I believe that a lot of people think that because this stuff is old that it must have a large value. I remind people that 95% of the stuff we collect is common and millions were made. Some stuff is getting somewhat harder to find but it is out there. For example: there were around 22 million helmets made during WW2 alone. I go to the same places that you mentioned looking for items to add to my collection. I pass up stuff all the time that I would like to have but the price is way over priced. Alot of people don't have any knowledge about military collecting and so they don't know what price to ask so they search online and find something that looks like what they have and they ask the same high price. Other people just try to take advantage of others because they love the money. Collecting militaria is a whole other world than what non collectors realize. There are some many details, characteristics, etc that we look for and pay attention to. Honestly, it's kind of sad going I to some antique stores that I visit regularly because ei see so many items sitting there month after month and year after year because the price is outrageous. Sometimes I ask about a discounted price but most of the time they wont budge. 98% of the 115 helmets in my collection I paid $0 - $40. There might be 10 that I paid over $40. Alot of it has to do with being at the right place at the right time. I talk to people all the time and let others know what I am looking for. It has helped me out alot over the years.
JonBoy09 Thanks for the response! I always try to bargain, but some people simply do not budge. The most I’ve paid on an M1 helmet is $40, as it was my first helmet ever and I did not know anything about it, but it came with a clean Vietnam liner, so I could have done a lot worse. The helmet I have has a 1952 dated linear made by Micarta the helmet itself is a swivel bale manganese rear seam with a heat stamp of what looks like 75A but I'm just not totally sure but from what I can tell it is a Korean war era helmet and keep up the good work on the videos
Got another fixed bale front seam again. The heat stamp appears to say 809A. Though I could be wrong because there’s some pitting around it so it’s pretty hard to read. Hope you can identify the date on it.
I have a few videos about my liners from when I was a kid... But now that I'm older I am trying to figure out my shell. It has a heat stamp 07G, front seam, swivel Bale and from what I can tell, manganese rim. Probably from about '44?
The heat stamp should have 2 more digits before the 07G since it has a manganese rim. It's possibly 1007G and the first 2 digits faded away. If so, then that would date eound September 1944 which means that your helmet would have been one of the last ones produced with a front seam.
Important caveat...the heat lot number tells you ,numerically, when the sheet of Hadfield steel was accepted into the McCord plant, not when the helmet was actually made...
@@JonBoyMilitaria I think if you go on to Josh Murray's web site, you'll find a copy of a history paper, in essay form, a very detailed piece about the 'Heat lot' number problem... you're right about fix bails being refitted with swivel bails ( that includes the 1960's Ingersoll repurposing program) but it's more involved than that; I guess anything goes 🤣

Hey William, thanks for watching. You are correct. Your helmet would have orignally been a fixed bale. 586B would be a McCord and it would date to around August 1943.

I have another one I'm not sure of think it's a parish but after watch your video it could be the other one you mentioned numbers are definitely upside down, I will get a picture and send to you .if it's okay? andrew fox The heat stamp could have been faintly stamped and wore out, could have been painted over, or could be in a different location that most. Paratroopers mostly used D bale helmets.

So I have this helmet. It’s an early one for sure, fixed bells and stainless rim, but I can’t find anything on it. It’s heat stamp is 53A with large letters. With a Hawley liner matching to the helmet. Any idea on the date?
JonBoy09 I would agree but the helmet shape is a McCord, And I the font is more like a McCord then a schlueter. To give context to the helmet, It belonged to my Great Grandfather. He was in the U.S.M.C.R and was activated around 1942.
@@tankerman1319 Schlueter heat stamps were taller than McCord heat stamps and the font is different. Your grandfather could have changed helmets during his service. I would have to see a picture of your helmet.

I have a helmet rear seam swivel non stainless the numbers are 1169 I can't find any info on it. I think it is the same as the last one in this video. No liner unfortunately.

Your earliest helmet would have to be near then end of 1941 like in December because at Pearl Harbor we had the ww1 type helmets... I maybe wrong with it being 1941 even but we were wearing ww1 style helmets at Bataan. Also I still could be wrong in many ways because you are a professional and I am a middle class collector
JonBoy09 oh ok I got a M1 helmet from 1942 it had seen much combat because the strap had been missing chunks in certain parts and the hook was gone and the helmet liner was alright but was ripped a little I asked more about the helmet and they said that most was dented and torn from combat except the liner they said that happened over time for people wearing it and a little rough with it. I got it for $79 dollars and ended up enjoying the buy. It is also a Westinghouse brand helmet btw
I believe it improved the structural integrity of the shell. For example, on a lot of front seam helmets, you see stress cracks on the back. However, on rear seam helmets, you don't see this really much, or even at all. Pretty sure this is due to the seam change.

Alot of ww2 helmets were used in Korea and Vietnam. Parts were replaced as needed.

just received a m1 and liner and this vid helped me to find out that it's WW2 issue, heat stamp is 809A and the liner is firestone.

Sometimes the heat stamp will be found in other areas of the helmet besides the main area.
Jon I just bought a McCord on Ebay last night M 302 heat stamp converted to swivel bale for $37 Looks like with that heat stamp it puts it in 1941.
If it has an M before the numbers then it is a Model 1951 McCord helmet.

That is correct. Your helmet is a World War 2 Schlueter.

Yes, if you can find an early fixed bale helmet with all of the original brass hardware then you would have some value.

I maybe wrong with it being 1941 even but we were wearing ww1 style helmets at Bataan. Also I still could be wrong in many ways because you are a professional and I am a middle class collector

JonBoy09 oh ok I got a M1 helmet from 1942 it had seen much combat because the strap had been missing chunks in certain parts and the hook was gone and the helmet liner was alright but was ripped a little I asked more about the helmet and they said that most was dented and torn from combat except the liner they said that happened over time for people wearing it and a little rough with it. I got it for $79 dollars and ended up enjoying the buy. It is also a Westinghouse brand helmet btw

That heat stamp would date to around April/May 1943.

Do you know why the seam was moved from the front to the rear?
Brandon Farnsworth The exact reason is but really known.
I think it was because the helmets would split up the seam when they were shot or scraped by shrapnel
I believe it improved the structural integrity of the shell. For example, on a lot of front seam helmets, you see stress cracks on the back. However, on rear seam helmets, you don't see this really much, or even at all. Pretty sure this is due to the seam change.
i always thought that they moved in the back because GI's would get cut
I have 750E, front seam, swivel bail. Do you have any Schlueter helmet?
I have about 15 Schlueters
750E would a McCord that dates around December 1943.

what would you date a 66B and a 111A m1 helmet thanks sir. the 111A has an s below the heat stamp.
The 66B would be a McCord and it would date around February 1942. The 111A S would be a Schlueter that would date around Mid-1943.
