  • Kristen Stewart delivered terrific dramatic performances in Clouds of Sils Maria, Personal Shopper, and Spencer, and yet she still hasn't walked away with an Oscar trophy. In this video, I break down Stewart's remarkable career and discuss the reasons why she hasn't won an Academy Award. #kristenstewart #oscars #academyawards #brianrowevideo #elusiveoscar

Luke's reaction represents me that morning! I was literally crying and screming, as Greta Gerwig said: "I just love Kristen Stewart, she is so watchable."
She is so genuinely herself, she is always talking about how much she loves movies and the art of cinema, and unlike many movie star she takes criticism with a heart open. I'm proud of her.

You know whose career Kristen's reminds me a bit of? Keanu Reeves. They both came to be defined by a role (Twilight for Kristen, Bill & Ted for Keanu) and have never lived it down, though the Cesar win and Oscar nom are certainly proof that at least there are some people who realize how good she is at this. However, when you look past those roles that created the perception, you realize they've both put together strong resumes.

This makes me think, well, Keanu would definitely deserve some Oscar nom someday. I’m not exactly a fan of his acting but his name sells tickets and that’s important in the film business too. Not long ago there’s been some Keanu renaissance as the John Wick franchise is a hit, he’s had so much goodwill in the industry and while he remains a major star, his personal life is very private. I guess it may take some prestige indie director and a passion project for Keanu and he would get some awards love.
Kristen deserved her Oscar nom and I’m glad she made it this far. She made a good decision to stay away from blockbuster/popcorn films post-Twilight. In the final years of the said franchise, there’s been backlash on the films’ directions and their portrayals, and the massive media attention the cast got (to the point that Robert Pattinson encouraged to hate-watch the movies). Especially the time that Kristen was caught making out with Rupert Sanders, the director of her other film Snow White and the Huntsman. Kristen and Robert broke up and they both led divergent careers with indies. A lot has moved on from the Twilight franchise films.

I think it is important to note that the acedemy typically don't award young actresses as you kinda have to build a rep in the industry first before they see you as worthy. She’s should’ve gotten her first nominations for still Alice and St. Cloud and I still feel she should’ve won for Spencer. As much as I love Jessica’s performance and it’s great she was long overdue for an Oscar it’s pretty obvious Oscar politics worked against Kristen and benefited Jessica
    1) the eyes of Tammy Faye was the more conversational, typical Hollywood biopic that Oscar voters eat up while Spencer is more in line with Citizen Kane and Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette as being an anti-Hollywood biopic as it uses influences of unconventional film genres such as psychological thriller and gothic horror and openly admitting that there’s just as much fiction as real life references to the plot. Not to mention Jessica’s performance had the more flashy, physically transformative approach that Oscar voters have another biases to while Kristen although physically transforming herself with her vocal delivery and mannerisms wasn’t flashy and more subtly approachable
    2) Jessica already got 2 previous Oscar nominations and was long overdue for another nomination let alone a win after giving superior and acclaimed performances throughout the past decade but was overlooked bc of heavy competition and the divisive receptions of the films she starred in, while this was Kristen’s first nomination and although proven herself to be a great actress starred in films that were considered too small, indie and foreign/international to be recognized by Oscar voters (in the words of the iconic Bong Joon-ho “the Oscars are a local awards”) Spencer was her most profile film from American/mainstream film audiences since the twilight franchise and her constantly being seen as Bella swan for a decade was still burden
    3) there wasn’t a full front runner for best actress this year like it was for the 2019-2020 season with Renee Zellweger or even a heavy competitive nail biter like last year with Frances mcdormand, viola Davis and Carey mulligan since none of the nominees had their films be nominated for best picture and majority of them weren’t fully nominated in the precouer awards (none of the best actress Oscar nominees were nominated for the BAFTA and 2/3 of the nominees weren’t nominated for the SAG), leaving the space for someone to get the win and based on previous Oscar narratives Jessica got the slot
I feel Kristen will get her Oscar win in the near future and like I said I’m happy Jessica won if it wasn’t gonna be Kristen it should’ve Jessica and thankfully it was

I mean objectively I think this year's Oscar noms for Best Actress were:
      Jessica Chastain
      Jennifer Hudson
      Penelope Cruz
      Kristen Stewart
      & Olivia Coleman
( I will say, I do Nicole Kidman is worthy of her Golden Globe for Being the Ricardos, but i associate Her and Coleman as tied for 5th and 6th. Nicole deserved the golden globe but not the oscar. )
However, Kristen had a phenomenal performance, but its not an Oscar winning performance. The critics ate her up, but the actors chewed her out. Im glad she's an Academy Award nominee now, but to say she was snubbed for this year is an exaggeration, as both Hudson and Cruz had BRILLIANT performances yet each were only recognized by 1 of the 5 major acting awards. She did good for the nomination.

@@SoulKnightKing I disagree from the minute Spencer premiered at the Venice film festival and later released worldwide to theaters Kristen was constantly in the conversation of the best actress Oscar and before you or anyone say it, it wasn’t just fans on film Twitter it was literally everywhere talked about by the time the industry voted awards (golden globes, SAG, critics choice, BAFTA, Oscar’s) started rolling in the nominations she already won more best actress awards than other Oscar contenders and eventual nominees in the critics/film festival voted awards if her momentum wasn’t strong enough why is it there were massive backlash when Nicole Kidman won over her for the golden globe or when she wasn’t nominated for SAG? Her momteum when those situations happened and Jessica chastian end up winning SAG and critics choice. As for “actors chewed her out” please they only did bc they still viewed her as Bella swan from twilight and unfortunately her more acclaimed work is not rooted in the mainstream Hollywood machine and more in the crowds of indie arthouse market/industry and international European film maker/industry
Also please answer this, what is considered a “Oscar winning performance” no offense but I find that phrase being used as pretentious and full of elitist consciousness bc from my experience of people who tell that phrase it’s always a preconceived notions of what someone/people think what is worthy of acclaim and accolades that is rooted in the internalized ideals of how the Oscars work and give out their awards that itself is a major reason why the Oscar’s and Hollywood award shows have become more problematic and polarizing and eventually lost their credibility bc they ingrained the general public into think certain types of films and performances are deserving of accolades when it’s just based on their subjective and biased likeness of certain projects that have been known to be rooted in bigotry consciousness like racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, elitism, Eurocentrism etc, so like what is a Oscar winning performance??

@@Kevin-rg3yc Spencer has never received a nomination, in any category and in any festival. It was presented in Venice, but no win. I think this is a clue. Neither the director nor the other actors. Newspaper articles said the royal family didn't want to know about Spencer and I read that the kids didn't want to meet Kristen. Maybe it's fake news, but Google said so months ago.
Kristen has won many awards for spencer but no award (maybe two) was important to exclaim: "beautiful victory!" She was rejected at the SAGs and here too, she was a very important prize. She was nominated for a Golden Globe but didn't win. Now things have gone this way, Kristen has been appreciated a lot, but not enough to win an Oscar like Jessica did.
Before Twilight nobody knew Kristen, few people knew of her existence as an actress and for many she still remained Bella Swan. There is even a photomontage in which a person is looking at Spencer and in front of her another person is looking at Twilight and below her they write about her: two versions of Bella Swan.

I think the popularity of the Netflix series The Crown is also a factor on Kristen’s Oscar journey for Spencer. The fourth season of The Crown introduced the character of Lady Diana Spencer and the upcoming fifth season will chart the peak of her marriage crisis leading to her tragic end. Although The Crown is more in line to the stories of Queen Elizabeth II, Diana was the star of the said season (and this is expected for season 5 too), and Emma Corrin played Diana really well. Even Netflix prioritized Emma’s Emmy campaign for Lead Actress, but Olivia Colman won in the end in the same category playing the Queen. (And funnily, Olivia was nominated for the Oscar in the same category as Kristen! But this time, in The Lost Daughter) Emma as Diana ends just at the time she and Prince Charles just reached the tipping point to separate (in 1990). Kristen as Diana in Spencer contemplated to separate from Charles and from the Royal Family, set in 1991. As The Crown’s next season will introduce much older actors for the principal roles, Elizabeth Debicki will take over as Diana, and chances are the comparisons and parallels to Kristen will be discussed, since Elizabeth will play the final years of Diana’s life, leading to her divorce and car accident.
Even at the BAFTAs (for TV), The Crown underperforms in both the main and craft categories, managing several nominations and few wins, with the only win from the main awards was for Vanessa Kirby in Best Supporting Actress as young Princess Margaret. Emma Corrin did not manage to get a BAFTA nomination, and worse, Olivia Colman getting snubbed (and the fact that Olivia keeps getting snubbed for her recent works since winning the Oscar for The Favourite a few years ago, but that’s a discussion for another time)! The show has had considerable backlash regarding its portrayal of still-living characters, and there are stories that Prince William, as BAFTA President, is not receptive of the series. It also did not help that The Crown is more popular in America and the BAFTAs generally snub British shows with more stateside following (like Downton Abbey, which only managed a few BAFTA noms but so many Emmys). If a more accessible and easy to follow program like The Crown struggles to get BAFTAs, what more with Spencer?

So this is the thing about Stewart. I first met her onscreen for Zathura. Fun film. However, I didn't realize it was her when she became Bella. Doing Twilight was one of the best and worst things for her career at the same time. Objectively, Stewart's portrayal as Bella is a miscast. Bella was fun and hopeful in the books but when Stewart played the part she brought a stiffness and pain that wasn't essential for the character. It def confused fans, and gave critical the opportunity to appropriately rip her to shreds. Unfortunately as a fan of twilight, I do believe that she deserved her razzzie noms for Twilight. The irony then becomes that thought critics hated her, it blew her in a stardom that gave her new opportunities she did not have prior.
A smart business move she made was sterling away from the rom come and blockbusters. Lautner after Twilight preemptively tried to become an action star, when his discipline as an actor was nonexistent. He relied on his abs on screen which was enabled during his tenure on Twilight. However when he did Abduction for $10 million dollars with a blockbuster flop and critics destroying his credibility as a serious actor his career was finished. Still effectively ruined. Kristen on the other hand, doing the smaller indie films and getting her hours on hours of mastering and practicing her craft has allowed her to understand how to be an actress and how she wants to approach films. Experience and wisdom that was not there during her Twilight years. If she would have focused on rom coms, fantasy, or blockbuster; one mistake would have ruined her career. Plus I do believe her embracing a blonde hairstyle has allowed viewers to disassociate her from Bella. That has allowed her to do the countless films she's done, and allowed her to final snag an Oscar nomination.
I believe she has won the critics a few films ago, but her portrayal of Spencer did help the Academy and American Film industry to begin recognizing her skill as an actress. Plus in hindsight her being nominated in a year where all other 4 nominees are Academy Award winners helps her future narratives and will strengthen her opportunity for her to snag an Oscar at some point in her career. Spencer was a brilliant portrayal, sure. But I believe she needed a Spencer to get a nomination. She has a way to go for that Oscar gold, however if she continues with her work ethic and experienced resume, I predict by her 3rd nomination she will have an overdue narrative that will allow her to be in contentiom to win a Best Actress Acadmey Award.

you made me think a lot and you're right. I do not honestly know if his ex Pattinson's career is going better, now he plays Batman, maybe they will also make sequels and it seems that it is a film that has hit the box office, or at least in Italy. maybe kristen was also ruined because just before the oscars, weeks before a podcast about twilight was released by the actress (I don't remember the name) who played Alice Cullen (forgive me but I don't remember the name it's been so many years) on youtube and spotify and apple music where she talked about twilight and maybe it brought twilight back to the surface. I remember kristen on set didn't get along with anyone or so they said. kristen boasts few major movies outside of twilight and spencer, although spencer is not a saga like twilight...
but I think now he will be out of the cinema for a while to devote himself to the wedding and the project of his fiancée which she will help finance. her girlfriend wants to write a TV series or a show I don't remember well. taylor was more unfortunate because after twilight he disappeared.

Lot of interesting thoughts that I agree with, but how on earth was Bella fun in the books? She's such a ridiculously bland character with no actual personality. I'm not saying she's a bad actress but she gave all of her best performances as a teenager (adventureland, the cake eaters, speak etc) and hasn't progressed beyond this level. All of her characters have the exact same ticks and mannerisms that she does. She rarely changes the inflections of her voice either. These may work for some of her characters but every single one? Doesn't work for me. Picking versatile roles doesn't mean you're versatile in them

Kristen Stewart: Beautiful woman, very smart but her acting talent is limited. She's more of a supporting actress rather than lead. She plays a variation of the same character in every film she is in. Is there really that much difference between the character she played in Clouds or personal Shopper? No...

Twilight was an indie film, it wasn't given any "Faith", cause it was a film for girls. And those razzie nominations were just out of hate. Honestly, if you read the books she nails the clumsy, awkward girl, and those kinds of performances are NEVER shown onscreen. The only Hollywood pic she's ever decided to be apart of with a big budget was Snow White.

When I watched "Eyes of Tammy Faye" the first thing I thought was "She's going to win the Oscar for this." And she did. When I was sitting in a midtown Manhattan theater watching "The Piano" I leaned over to my roommate and whispered "Holly Hunter and that little girl are both going to win Oscars for this.". And they both did (Holly Hunter and I forget the girls name lol). When I saw "The Favourite" I again predicted Olivia would win and she did. When I watched "Spencer" I didn't finish it. I couldn't. Because it was so inaccurate it's not funny. Seriously. It's not even funny. My first issue was that Christmas is spent in Scotland at Balmoral. They weren't at Balmoral in the film. They aren't even in Scotland. And the Queen NEVER acted the way she did twords Diana or anyone, ever. I was 11 when I watched her walk down the aisle. They were married the day before my birthday. I had my birthday party that day because it was a Saturday and all anyone did was watch the wedding. Which had already happened hours before. Every network at the time, all 3, plus PBS, aired it live. That's NBC AbC and CBS and PBS. All 4 networks dedicated the entire 24 hours to that wedding. They aired it 3 times to ensure that all 1 billion people watching got to see it. 1 billion people! For a wedding! So I remember the significance of this woman. And the family she married into. And I think they all deserve to be represented correctly and not as monsters. I cried that night in 1997 when we found out she was killed. I cried that whole week and I cried watching her funeral procession. But I wasn't upset at the family. I wasn't upset for the way the Queen behaved because how was she supposed to behave? They stayed at Balmoral for the boys. And divorced former HRH's don't get state funerals you know why? Because those are paid by the tax payers and up till that day the British people wanted to hang the Royal family because they function off of taxes. Not really just anything they do that's official. When Harry and Megan got married the only thing the taxes paid for was the security. The wedding itself they paid out of pocket. Anyway the actress that plays her on The Crown is a freak of nature shes so good. Give her an Emmy!

I think she ruined her chances herself for making her engagement to her girlfriend public. that did her in!!! People try to look supportive and nice abd like they don't care but prolly people are not that lgbt friendly. And that was prolly her downfall at sag and baftas. Oscars were kinder to her but she had no chance in winning the award. Anyway she should be happy with the nod. that alone is a huge accomplishment.

She's not likeable in her public image, she is always saying things that won't help her chances for awards. I honestly don't think she's such a great actress either. If she wants to gain more fans inside the Academy she should consider expanding her movie choices from independent/indie films to blockbusters that actually work (not like the crappy "Charlie's angels" remake). Right now I think Pattinson has more chances to win an Oscar than she does in the near future. I'm already picturing all the Stewart fan hate I'm gonna get 😂

@@yvonneplant9434 Pattinson left aside the indie films for now and went to do "Tenet" & ""The Batman" which gave him more popularity among Oscar members. And also had good reception among critics. It was just an example, Daniel Radcliffe has gone a similar path since leaving Potter. She's got a public image that should try to work on a bit if she really wants to win something. She should try to pick up roles that will work on a mainstream level too. Example: Jessica Chastain won for a small independent film like "Tammy Faye " but she's been in a lot of mainstream big budget movies that also were box office hits and well recieved by critics. That's how you built a reputation likely to send you to the Oscar road

@@yvonneplant9434 see? That's a good example. Ariana DeBose is more likeable in interviews, in promoting her movies with journalists, with the crowds, she's got a more "friendly" image and that certainly helped for her Oscar race. Stewart has a public image that's not "award-friendly" and it's her personality, it has nothing to do with sexual orientation. To me, if she wants to gain massive appreciation she needs to work on her public persona and choose roles that are more "crowd pleasing" while also work on indie stuff
