- The Éothéod are the ancestors of the Rohirrim. In today's video, we explore their origins and their early battles with the Wainriders and their early alliance with Gondor. In addition to their battles, we trace their homes from scattered settlements in Rhovanion to the Vales of Anduin, to the land in the far north, near the Grey Mountains that would be known as Éothéod. The Lords of the Éothéod are known not only for their wars with Gondor against the Wainriders, but also for such deeds as slaying the dragon Scatha - an event which has a direct connection to the Scouring of the Shire in The Lord of the Rings. In this video, and next week's, we will trace the ancestry of the Rohirrim to answer the question: Where did the people of Rohan come from?

Eomer is one of my favorite characters. Valiant commander, skillful warrior and loyal man, true Rohhirim! Forth Eorlingas!
Also, pretty much all of Théoden’s best lines from the films are Éomer’s in the book. 😄 I love his reaction to seeing Théoden and Éowyn fallen on the battlefield. You can tell he cares so much for them both.

Did you know that the language spoken/written by the Rohirrim is Anglo-Saxon? My love for Tolkien and medieval literature, particularly Arthurian legend, impelled me to take a course on Beowulf as part of my Ph.D. studies. In order to read Beowulf in the original, we had to learn Anglo-Saxon -- one of the hardest courses I've EVER taken. But, to my utter delight, I ended up able to translate the songs and poems of the Mark! It's a spare, dignified, rich language -- Tolkien's linguistic brilliance shines in his choice of Old English as the language of the Rohirrim.
Tolkien was a professor of Anglo-Saxon studies, I believe. It's why LOTR reads like a Saga.

And the language of the riders of Rhovanion was modeled after the Gothic language (at least their names like Marhwini, "marh" meaning "horse"). ;) Have you ever wondered why there is a resemblance between some rohirric names and the names of some (real) gothic kings during late antiquity? (For example: Theoderic, Theodahad, Thorismund)
@@untruelie2640 The language of the Eotheod is Anglo-Saxon; so was the language of Britain in late antiquity.
@@sonyahannah Yes, but the Names of their ancestors from Rhovanion were Gothic names, so it is likely that Tolkien wanted their language to have the same relation to the language of the Eothéod as Gothic has to Old English/Anglo-Saxon. I'm not making this up; Christopher Tolkien explained this in the "Unfinished Tales".
All Eotheod/Rohirrim are my favorite. They are humans, no special "powers" except an exceptional sense of integrity, honor, friendship, and love. They tie their lives to another wonderful creature... the horse. It is a civilization grounded to the earth, bound to loyalty and a respect for others... think of the humans that resembled the pukelmen statues. Just as an example, even as Eomer is banished, he continues to protect the country... honor, duty bound and fierce love. And all those who follow him do so despite the act of defiance and banishment.
I get teary eyed every time I read or watch or hear the sounds of their horns as they ride on to the Pelennor Fields. The subtle but exquisite white flower that graces the graves is an appropriate symbol of their character.
And yet their King was swayed by a man named Grima Wormtongue. Just Men, indeed.
They are so underrated, everything seems to be all 'Gondor Gondor Gondor' but really Rohan is just as epic (although they are a bit obsessed with horses for my liking - not that horses aren't cool though) 😀

@@laurelelasselin well Gondor represent the ancient Roman empire in the real world, so that is why, while Rohan maybe just western Europe or the British Isles or Anglo saxon which started very late in the history of civilization compared to rome and Greece which represent Gondor.
Fun Fact: According to the "Unfinished Tales", Tolkien modeled the language of the Rohirrim after Old English while their ancient ancestors, the Rhovanians, were given names in Gothic, since their language would've been much older than the language of the Rhovanians - as Gothic was older than Old English as well. If you look at the names of real ostrogothic and visigothic kings in late antiquity, you will find a striking resemblance to some rohirric names... (for example: Theoderic, Theodahad, Thorismund)
@Tom Repetti Yes, but that is hardly surprising, given Tolkiens professional background. I already knew about theodisc/thiudisc (since I'm German myself). Thank you for this further insight. Fun Fact: Tolkien borrowed the name "Rohan" (the name given to the land of the Rohirrim) from the breton noble house of Rohan ("Roc'han" in Breton). And guess how the supposed ancestor of this dynasty was called? Conan Meriadoc, the legendary founder of Brittany. ;)
@Tom Repetti As you may know, the latin word "peregrinus" means "one from abroad", so the origin of another familiar name is quite obvious. :D

Fram, son of Frumgar and Eorl the Young were always big favorites of mine. They embody the Rohirrim core values of audacity, cheek, and stubbornness, for all time. I'd love to see a film that culminates in the Oath of Eorl.

Rohan always had my heart, from the time I first read LOTR at age 10, till now. It's always been sad to me that there isn't more that Tolkein wrote about them. Glad to see what he had written put so concisely into a single source video.
As for my favorite? When I was 10, it was Eomer, but as I reread LOTR again and again, it became first eowyn, for her sadness, and theoden for his strength once freed by Gandalf. But now, I think Fram. I love that story

I too feel like there's not enough focus (or canon info on) the Middle Earth races of Man. I've always had a fascination of and for Bree, Woodmen, Dale and the Drúedain. I wish the was a bit more about their history.
Totally agree. I mean, let's be honest, I be enthralled to read the family history of Barliman Butterbur if Tolkien had given it to us! Poor Barliman, he probably couldn't remember much of his family tree - "one thing drives out another!"

I believe we all wished Tolkien had lived 50 more years to give us more lore and even personal stories for some of the characters.

Great video! I love how deep the history of the Third Age is, and how much there is to keep track of. Even having read everything there is to read, it's easy to forget what happens - to the extent where this video felt like fresh info again. Love Middle-earth.
Learning about this world is so much like learning and connecting cultures in our own that it's surprising and I'm not even sure what makes it feel like that but this is something that continues to amaze me!

Tolkien trained horses during WWI. It always made him sad to release them to soldiers going into the war. (Yes, horses were still used somewhat then.) He believed that in 1066, when the French crossed the Chanel and conquered the Anglo-Saxons in England under William the Conqueror (or Wm the Bastard), that the only reason they defeated the warriors of England was because they had horses. War horses not only gave their riders reach and speed, but were trained as weapons, using their hooves and even teeth during battle.
Please put conquerer in parentheses next time and bastard in front 😉 The North does not forget...

Horses weren't just used in WW1 but WW2 as well, especially on the Eastern Front.

They are kinda actually human, could be placed in a historical setting almost. While Gondor (and even more so Numenor ofc) is quite different, with the Dunedain long life, huge fortresses, unending fight against Mordor, etc. 😁

another thing, when Easterlings came to Rhovannion, most people forget that, the maojority of Northmen went to Dale... only a few merge with Gondor and a few (mostly horsebreeders and best warriors) go to the Eothed
Dale should get way more credit in the films, the real royal blood of Northmen ;)

Forgive my ignorance, but what did you use for source material? Is this fully based on JRR and Christopher's writings? I am always fascinated by Middle Earth and have been since I was very young...
No problem! Happy to answer that! I do some of my preliminary research on Tolkien Gateway, to get the rough outline of my video, but also check the sources to make sure they are cited properly, especially if it’s something that doesn’t quite sound accurate or if I haven’t heard it before.
While I know a good amount of the material from previous reading/research, it’s far too expansive to not use other sources. Lol. Thankfully, TG is typically well cited and I’m able to reference back the original texts (LOTR appendices, Christopher Tolkien’s HoMe books, etc) pretty easily.

Rohan is definitely one of my favorite aspects of the Tolkien mythos. They’re an interesting land and culture with a very unique perspective on the history of middle earth, and they kind of remind me of early 20th century United States in a lot of ways: they’re relatively young nation compared to the European empires and are at first isolationists who want little to do with the war until it comes close to their borders and they help to bring the war to an end in the last few days of fighting. But I can understand why Gondor and Númenor get more attention. Relatively speaking, Rohan is a pretty young kingdom. They weren’t founded until late in the Third Age, and so they don’t really have as much history to delve into compared to Gondor.
Tolkien really said "I'll just call it Framsburg" all these flowery names and then there's Framsburg

What I always found weird is how the populations of humans did not recover more quickly after conflicts or how the Rohirrim did not just keep their original lands as well as Rohan. Because real humans get massive population explosions whenever food production increases or land mass increases. All the other races should have been long outcompeted by humans who would multiply very fast. Just like modern humans who will keep having population booms when new technological breakthroughs are made, the next could be a breakthrough in energy production such as geothermal or fusion power. It's very possible that human populations grow so fast that we can't prevent our own extinction and full destruction of the environment. Why are the humans of Middle Earth so different? Why did some conflicts last so long when humans usually would fight very intensely in historical wars and either win or fail big and then recover extremely quickly?
You can really see the parallels between Fram and Scatha and Sigurd and Fafnir. This also happens with Turin and Glaurung too. Tolkien took heavily from the Norse sagas, and the Rohirrim's culture is heavily taken from it. The Eothed's armour even looks like the ones depicted in artworks of Beowulf. they even dwelled in the North like the Norse!
I think it is all interesting and Numenoreans, I believe, have a closer and richer history to the magical part of middle earth. And everyone is an Aragorn fan it seems.

The men of Rohan are a mirror for the migration in dark age Britain... they stand as the Saxons and this is reflected directly in the names and language of the characters... the Viking establishment are the dunedain and the elvish being first reflect the native Celtic cultures of Britain.. this again is reflected in elvish and its similarities to languages such as welsh... this was Tolkien’s conscious basis for the lay of the land and peoples of middle earth therein
If only the numenoreans had lived. Aragorn was a descendant of numenor but not that many survived what Sauron did to their land. I wonder why the elves or dwarves didn’t aid them.
Númenor broke their ties with the Elves and the Dwarves don't care that much for the other people. What happened to Númenor was their own fault

No wonder the elves were so deadly they had infinity time to hone their battle skills even more impressive is the numonorians dwarves and humans that became nearly just as if not more skilled in a mere fraction of the time 👍🤔
To be fair, elves spent most of their time in Valinor/Doriath where they didn’t have to fight. They didn’t even know what a sword was until Feanor created one.
On the other hand humans and dwarves were fighting for their lives, so they were better at it.
Even Silvan Elves or Avari were more advanced than men as well as more skilled by NATURE. They are naturally taller, faster, more stamina, more durable, stronger, heightened senses, ambidextruous and even had a healing factor lol
If they were to be provoked they were killing machines not to mention those that lived in Aman...
@@therealelderking5830 Only the elves from Aman did not have war-like weapons, the others had to live in the shadows of ME and had conflicts with Dwarves and orcs. In Aman however, they were more developed, having athletes and scholars but were safe from harm. Also the time in great part of the first age are counted in the 'years of the trees" so when they made swords It was hundreds of our years before they went back to ME to fight Morgoth.
