Hi Jon, one of my favourite 2600 games was Dig Dug. Many countless hours spent play it. But also loved H.E.R.O. What a fantastic game with so many levels crammed into such a short amount of memory. The 2600 was my first computer/console, I had the Darth Vader version, and will never be forgotten.
H.E.R.O. is a longtime fave of mine, too, Alan. Many years ago I introduced it to Mo here on the channel. It was the Atari 8-bit flavor, but the spirit is the same! ruclips.net/video/EgdixvE59Ow/видео.html
Great video and in this case “tutorial” per the usual, Jon. You’re a master! I’m a middle school technology teacher and we are so going to try this next school year. Keep up the good work. Thank you for the great content!
Good afternoon, thank you for taking time to do this tutorial for all of us who did not grow up with a computer at home. Unfortunately I am unable able to enjoy this because of course I found it after an update so now I can’t make it work for me. Sad that I can’t make it work for me but happy for people like you that share.
FYI - The HC Roms folder is for users that have a Harmony Cartridge which is basically an EverDrive or SD Card Multi Cart. The folder structure is a little more organized for easier navigation when playing on a Harmony Cart on real hardware.
Stella is pretty good, but the EMU7800 is even easier to set up and use. I like both it and Stella, but I find myself playing on the EMU7800 more because it's so easy. You don't have to mess around with looking for files in it like you do with Stella. It's also My Hyperkin Retron 77 quit working a few days ago. Worked great for several years, but won't even turn on anymore. It used Stella to great effect and has an easier interface than the PC version does, but something has gone wrong with mine. I was despondent about it until I discovered that I can use a USB gamepad to play the games on EMU7800 and Stella. Now, I don't miss my Retron77 as much. EMU7800 doesn't have saves or rewind and the visuals aren't as adjustable as they are on Stella but you can make it look a little fuzzy to make it more nostalgic. It does play both Atari 2600 and 7800 games though, so that's a bonus over Stella. It also has some of the prototypes and PAL games but not as many as you can get from Atarimania for Stella. Thanks for this tutorial on how to use Stella. I know a lot of people download it and are baffled when they open it and don't see a list of games to click on right away. Stella needs to work on this as players shouldn't have to dig around for the games like they do.
Great video and easy to understand! Thx a ton :-). Just one question : Did you find a solution to play raiders of the list arc (with the second joystick to change your equipped items)?
Thanks, glad it helped you get going. No problem with multi-joystick games. Just pop into Options->Input and configure what you'd like to map to a second controller.
You should make a MISTer FPGA. I read somewhere the DS card, or whatever it's called . . the main card . . is supposed to be dropping in price to 100 dollars? Do a short to the point HowTo video on that. You made this one perfect and to the point, no long winded opinions or thoughts. Thank you for that!
I've had a problem that I can't google how to fix, so I really hope you could help me: I can't seem to play any of the games against the computer. It always thinks I'm trying to play against another person. Do you know how to switch it from 2 player to 1 player?
Which game? Not all games have a computer opponenet option. For those that do, you'll need to use the GAME SELECT key to cycle from the default to another variation.
ah ... did you do this for the atari800, hatari emulators ...i started playing with these, basic ... i was having trouble with getting basic to save programs to disks virtual ... stella looked odd on the steamdeck

'when i tried downloading the Stella zip file I received : "A virus has been detected", should I use the Microsoft Windows workarounds guide? or it might be a real virus ?
There's a big problem with this tutorial: It doesn't use the Windows Search even once! Everyone knows that it's now impossible to use a Windows computer without using Windows Search for everything! In fact, I hear that the next version of Windows isn't going to have icons or a Start menu, just a Search box in the middle of the screen. :) Seriously though, one change I'd recommend people make is to go into the Input section and map keys for toggling the Color/BW switch, and the two Difficulty switches. While having keys to set the switches to specific positions may make sense for making sure that a game is set to one difficulty level or another, for the games that use those switches for game input, it's much more convenient to be able to press one key and toggle them. For example, the game Starmaster by Activision uses the Color/BW to switch between the star map and the action screen, while Phaser Patrol uses the left Difficulty switch for the same purpose, while the Color/BW switch turns your shields on/off. In the middle of a game, it's much easier to just hit one key, rather than remembering which key you need to use to set the switch to a specific position.
@@GenXGrownUp Well, technically those WERE toggle switches in that they had two positions and moving the switch would change between them. You're right that it wasn't a single button you press to change the mode though. While having a single key to change the state of those switches may not mimic the real world exactly, it's actually closer than having two distinct keys for the positions. To translate that into the real world, the VCS would have needed two mutually exclusive pushbutton switches for each function, one to push for Color, a second to push for B/W, one to push for left Difficulty A, a second to push for left Difficulty B, etc. And once you pressed the one for the Color setting, you would need to remember to push the one for the B/W setting in order to change it, because pressing the Color one again wouldn't do anything. While the actual switches on the VCS provided a visual reference for which mode each one was in, it was still easier to just reach for the single switch and move it to the opposite position. It's not as if anyone truly looked at the console and thought "The switch is in the Color mode setting, so I need to set it to B/W mode to change back to the main game screen." They just thought "I need to change screens, so I'll flip the switch." Especially as Starmaster really didn't care about the initial position of that switch. On the 4-switch models, the difficulty switches were moved to the back and became slide switches, so you usually couldn't even see them all that well when playing a game, you'd just feel for the switch and move it to the other position.
I love emulation and I was around to play the original Atari 2600... But I do not want any scan line filters. I like to play retro games on a modern screen and up the resolution
That's interesting. I also don't use scanlines, but I definitely do a bit of softening and CRT bloom. It just makes the images look more like I remember them. I was thinking of doing a video about the "right" way to play VCS in emulation. 😀
My memory of playing the 2600 was thinking that I wish the video game could have a more crisp image. I'm kind of disappointed by Atari's new VCS computer system from a couple years ago. I never imagined it would be a full-on gaming PC but 16 gig of dual channel ram and a little bit of a processor upgrade would have went a long way.
@@shawnwade302 Cool. I get that. If what you longed for ages ago was to see every pixel in its crunchy glory, clean emulation with no filters is just what the doctor ordered!
You're welcome to be that guy. As you know (which is what prompted your question), the issue of ROM image legality is often a gray area. Most vintage 2600 ROMs are considered abandoned, though the Atari brand name and many of Atari owned games are still being made available in Flashback and other products. So far the rights holders have not taken interest in ordering ROMs removed on this public site which has offered them up for years.
@@GenXGrownUp ok cool. I was asking mostly to make sure your channel wouldn’t get in trouble for posting this. I know Nintendo keep a tight grip on their games, I wasn’t sure about Atari 2600. Thanks for answering.
Dig Dug, Berzerk, Vanguard, Dark Cavern, Empire Strikes Back, Wizard Of Wor, ROTJ Death Star Battle, Moon Patrol, Pac Man, Combat (of course). Dare I say it, always found Pit Fall and Yar's Revenge a bit over-rated. Eeeeeekkk.

It can create some very convincing CRT effects. It's great. I've long been planning for a video just talking about those effects and whether the vintage look or modern crisp look are the better way to experience these games in the modern era.
Respectfully disagree. It just not practical for everyone to be able to hook up a 40+ year old console to a older TV to play. I love this emulator and I play it with my real CX-40 whenever I want to remember those fun times.
