So thankful to have found your video. My mother recieved a Hyacinth as a gift and all she has been doing is watering it and hiding it underneath our piano. Plus she asks people if they want it since she doesn't like it. So I have taken it under my care having no clue what to do to care for it.

Me too,my sister gave me one of these hyacinths and one of the branches started drooping.I wrapped the three bulbs together with garden tape to support the droopy one,The plant smells really fragrant.I hesitate to plant it outdoors because it will be getting hot outside.Thanks for the directions and information.

Same here. I never saw any of my relative keep a bulb after flowering. I have been doing it last year (Hippeastrums and Hyacinth hopefully this year) and the bulbs are pulling out a flower stalk! Keep on your efforts, it is so satisfying once your plants go out of dormancy

Grape hyacinths are NOT HYACINTHS! they are not the same flower and they are not even in the same family of flower. Please look at specific videos for grape hyacinths!
mine was store bought and already rooted in a glass vase, I got them in march and they have bloomed and wilted now. (I wanted to see it so it wasn't in a cool place...) Should've left it right on the patio and maybe it would've lasted longer. I trimmed back the flowers and since I read on one of your replied to not replant them, I added grounded eggshells and coffee grounds instead. My research is telling me they are potassium rich and relatively low in nitrogen? I didn't do a ton of digging. Hopefully that'll help them restore some life for next year!
Yes it sounds like you've done the right thing. They need lots of potassium as this encourages better flowering next year, but of course they also need a little bit of the other nutrients. Wait until the leaves and roots die off and then keep the bulb in a cool dry place like a cupboard over summer and then plant the bulb outside in autumn.
unfortunately somehow the middle between the leaves got moldy while I was away for a couple of days. I had to throw them out, maybe next year I'll get them again but in soil not water. Thanks for the reply!

It may seem painfully obvious to you, but to the less seasoned gardener this information is so valuable. For example, cutting the flowers off before they go to seed. I watched your video twice. They do best outside, so it should last for many years and flower every spring. If it was grown indoors last year the flowers won't be as good this year, but if its fed with tomato feed and is in a good sunny position it should flower well every year.

seeds can be sterile and its a waste of time to try to grow new plants from them. hyacinths are propagated commercially and are cheap enough to just buy new bulbs in the fall. that said it doesn't mean you can't try to grow them from seed!
Yes, they would germinate into small plants which would grow small bulbs in their first year. Then every year the bulbs will get bigger until after about 5 years they will be big enough to flower.
No not really, they need a cool climate with frosty winters. You can sometimes buy prepared bulbs that you can plant in the cooler months and they will flower once, but they won't repeat bloom in the tropics, and even prepared bulbs will struggle if you have warm temperatures year round.
Hi I bought store hyacinth flowers last year, cut them back and stored in a cool place, they have come back this spring after potting and leaving indoors- but the stars have grown really tall and the flowers haven't managed to come out properly, there doesn't seem to be enough room for the flowers to bloom within the stalks? Sounds like a lack of light or too warm, they usually grow much better when grown outdoors. You could plant them outside once the plants die back to the bulb.

Yes leaving them in the pot is fine, they will be dormant all summer and the summer flowers won't affect the hyacinths at all. I do this myself, just be careful when you remove the summer flowers in autumn that you don't damage the bulbs.
Yes they can, but they won't normally germinate until they have gone through a winter. So you can either sow them in compost, leave them outside and next spring they will start to germinate. Or you can sow them in compost and leave them in the fridge for a couple of months and then move them somewhere warm, this will make them grow this summer. Or you could dry out the seeds and then sow them directly in the ground in Autumn and they will grow next spring.
Hi thank you for your informative video! I have a question, I have two hyacinths in water vases but they seem to have dried out (one has another stem blooming). I was planning to move them into soil( (still indoors) but was not sure what kind of soil I should put them on and if I should cut off the dried stem like you did in your video. I also have another one who still is growing and hasn't bloomed yet but I really want them to grow for next year since I love them so much
Once all the leaves and roots have died you can then transfer them to a free draining compost or soil mix. Multipurpose compost with some perlite or grit added should work well. You can't transfer them to soil whilst in growth because the roots are extremely brittle and will snap. When you transfer them to soil they will need their summer dormancy period and then the cooler period in autumn to regrow their roots. Leaving the pot outside should allow this to happen as long as your not in the tropics. Before planting remove any leaves and roots so you are only left planting a bulb. Flowering next year will be bad because growing hyacinths in water weakens the bulb, but should improve for the following years if grown with plenty of light.
Can you do this with a hyacinth bulb being grown in a vase? Mine just flowered and I was hoping to save it and have it remain in water/vase but I don’t have soil to plant it in.
You can try, but the plant will struggle as it doesn't naturally grow in water, add a very dilute solution of tomato feed to the water so that the plant can absorb nutrients. Once the leaves and roots have died transfer the bulb to soil, it won't flower as well next year because its been growing in water, and you can't transfer it to soil until it becomes dormant because the roots are so fragile they will just snap if transplanted. Growing in water is ok for one year, but it can't be done every year. Many bulbs die after flowering in water.
None of this is the least bit necessary! The seeds do not grow. They grow from the bulb that needs all the leaves & flowers kept on it in order for the bulbs to get the entire benefit of them for next years plants! If you don't like looking at the dead flowers, unpot them put them in a paper bag until Spring then replant them, it's a good idea to put the bag with the bulbs in the refrigerator until Spring! Or even better plant them in your garden out side, when the flowers are all dead take the leaves & flower stems in a bunch bend them over & tie a string around them & let it alone! The leaves will die off and the nutrients will be in the bulb & they will bloom again in the Spring! If you keep cutting them no flowers will grow at all! Then you will have to wait several years before they bloom again! Why do you think tulip & daffodils are grown in acres of rows? They cut them for bouquets but once they are cut they won't grow back the next year, so the flower growers have to keep a large stock of them to support their supply to support the florists they supply! Don't cut anything off bulb plants!
Once the leaves die you can plant the bulb outdoors, but it won't grow until next spring. However in Florida it probably won't do well as it needs cold conditions over winter for it to grow its root properly. Florida is too tropical for hyacinths to do well unfortunately.
I live in the Midwest US, and the weather here jumps around in temperature. I got a hyacinth plant for my birthday, and I was wondering when I could plant it outside. Were the temperatures given in Celsius or Fahrenheit? Sorry, the US does everything differently (we hate it too.)
They are technically seeds, which will germinate into very small plants that will only produce a few tiny leaves in the first year. Over the first growing season they will form their bulbs. You can grow them from seed, but it can take about three years for the bulbs to be big enough to flower and about 5 years before you get big blooms. Freesias require similar aftercare, although with higher temperatures and light levels. They require a very warm dormant period to induce the formation of flower buds for next year. Also in cold climates they usually need to be dug up and stored as they are not frost hardy, unlike hyacinths. They are naturally winter flowering plants of the sub tropics or warm Mediterranean climate, and so can be difficult to grow in cold climates.
I would wait for the flowers to die, droopy leaves are usually caused by lack or water or low light levels. They will probably stay droopy if it's low light levels which has caused it, but droopy leaves are not usually a big problem for the health of the plant as long as they are green. Depending on the temperature hyacinths usually keep their green leaves for a month or more after flowering has finished.
Is it okay to prop up the flowers with a small post? My husband gave me hyacinth for Valentine's day. I was worried they would get damaged, so I posted them to stand up straight with a tie. Hoping this wasn't wrong. Thanks for your advice! 👍😊
Yes, you've done the right thing, sometimes the blooms can be very heavy and will flop over. Just make sure the tie is loose so it doesn't cut the stem. Then remove the post once the flowers have died back.
I just purchased the bulb 2 weeks ago in a glass globe type of holder from aldis. OMG it bloomed today 1/14/2021 and smells incredible. however my question is at the same day it blossomed it sprouted 4 green stems down into the water. What am i to do?? I am a newbie at this any info is appreciated
Sounds like it might be leaves or new bulbs forming, if you can carefully pull the green shoots out of the water, but be careful not to pull the root out the water as they will be almost impossible to put back in without breaking.
Hello there. I bought a forced hyacinth in a glass container with a neck. When I bought it, the roots had already come out. I put my hyacinth near a window and it bloomed in a week or so. I'm noticing that some of the flowers are becoming mushy and really soft. What should I do?
+Esther B. When all the flowers go like that you will need to cut the flower stem off like in the video above. Unfortunately our houses are a little too warm and so hyacinth flowers do not last long. If you want to prolong the flowering keep them in a cool room. Because your hyacinth is grown in a glass container with water it won't have enough energy to flower next year as it need nutrients from the soil to build up its energy for next years flowering. If you start adding a little bit of liquid fertiliser when you top up the water it may give the plant enough food for flowering next year. Keep it in a sunny location and feed it with a balanced feed for the first few weeks, such as miracle grow or baby bio, and then switch to a high potassium feed for the rest of its life, such as Tomorite. If the water goes cloud or green you will need to replace the water with fresh water. Keep the plant growing in a sunny windowsill, until its leaves start to die. You will find that the leaves will grow about three times the size after its finished flowering.Once its died back to just a bulb you can plant it in your garden, if you live somewhere which has winters which are not extremely cold, i.e. not beow -20C (-4F). If you live in the tropics let me know and there is something different you have to do. Unfortunately its pretty hard to grow a hyacinth for a long time in a glass vase without soil so most people just throw the plant out after flowering, or once the leaves look too messy. Its a shame because its so nice to see its roots grow in water, but really its happiest in soil.

Hyacinths are toxic so deer shouldn't eat them, but you can keep them on a sunny windowsill, just make sure its not a hot room. They will go dormant faster than if outside and they will need a cool period in autumn for them to root and get ready for flowering next year.
In early spring I feed it with a balanced feed, then I use tomato feed in late spring and summer to encourage it to flower flower well next year, any feed low in nitrogen is good. You can buy feeds from garden centres, diy stores or online.

Yes, but you will need to give it the dry dormant period over summer once the leaves die, and then in autumn you will need to give the plant colder temperatures and start watering again. As long as you don't live in the tropics putting the pot outside will allow the weather to do all this naturally, as long as the soil is not soggy. Rain and damp soil over summer is ok.

Hi I bought store hyacinth flowers last year, cut them back and stored in a cool place, they have come back this spring after potting and leaving indoors- but the stars have grown really tall and the flowers haven't managed to come out properly, there doesn't seem to be enough room for the flowers to bloom within the stalks? My question is should the bulbs have been planted outdoors for this season?
Sounds like a lack of light or too warm, they usually grow much better when grown outdoors. You could plant them outside once the plants die back to the bulb.

Yes leaving them in the pot is fine, they will be dormant all summer and the summer flowers won't affect the hyacinths at all. I do this myself, just be careful when you remove the summer flowers in autumn that you don't damage the bulbs.

if the flowers do go to seed what do you do with the seeds? Can they be sowed like other seeds just wondering?
Yes they can, but they won't normally germinate until they have gone through a winter. So you can either sow them in compost, leave them outside and next spring they will start to germinate. Or you can sow them in compost and leave them in the fridge for a couple of months and then move them somewhere warm, this will make them grow this summer. Or you could dry out the seeds and then sow them directly in the ground in Autumn and they will grow next spring.

Hi thank you for your informative video! I have a question, I have two hyacinths in water vases but they seem to have dried out (one has another stem blooming). I was planning to move them into soil( (still indoors) but was not sure what kind of soil I should put them on and if I should cut off the dried stem like you did in your video. I also have another one who still is growing and hasn't bloomed yet but I really want them to grow for next year since I love them so much
Once all the leaves and roots have died you can then transfer them to a free draining compost or soil mix. Multipurpose compost with some perlite or grit added should work well. You can't transfer them to soil whilst in growth because the roots are extremely brittle and will snap. When you transfer them to soil they will need their summer dormancy period and then the cooler period in autumn to regrow their roots. Leaving the pot outside should allow this to happen as long as your not in the tropics. Before planting remove any leaves and roots so you are only left planting a bulb. Flowering next year will be bad because growing hyacinths in water weakens the bulb, but should improve for the following years if grown with plenty of light.

Can you do this with a hyacinth bulb being grown in a vase? Mine just flowered and I was hoping to save it and have it remain in water/vase but I don’t have soil to plant it in.
You can try, but the plant will struggle as it doesn't naturally grow in water, add a very dilute solution of tomato feed to the water so that the plant can absorb nutrients. Once the leaves and roots have died transfer the bulb to soil, it won't flower as well next year because its been growing in water, and you can't transfer it to soil until it becomes dormant because the roots are so fragile they will just snap if transplanted. Growing in water is ok for one year, but it can't be done every year. Many bulbs die after flowering in water.
None of this is the least bit necessary! The seeds do not grow. They grow from the bulb that needs all the leaves & flowers kept on it in order for the bulbs to get the entire benefit of them for next years plants! If you don't like looking at the dead flowers, unpot them put them in a paper bag until Spring then replant them, it's a good idea to put the bag with the bulbs in the refrigerator until Spring! Or even better plant them in your garden out side, when the flowers are all dead take the leaves & flower stems in a bunch bend them over & tie a string around them & let it alone! The leaves will die off and the nutrients will be in the bulb & they will bloom again in the Spring! If you keep cutting them no flowers will grow at all! Then you will have to wait several years before they bloom again! Why do you think tulip & daffodils are grown in acres of rows? They cut them for bouquets but once they are cut they won't grow back the next year, so the flower growers have to keep a large stock of them to support their supply to support the florists they supply! Don't cut anything off bulb plants!

Once the leaves die you can plant the bulb outdoors, but it won't grow until next spring. However in Florida it probably won't do well as it needs cold conditions over winter for it to grow its root properly. Florida is too tropical for hyacinths to do well unfortunately.

They are technically seeds, which will germinate into very small plants that will only produce a few tiny leaves in the first year. Over the first growing season they will form their bulbs. You can grow them from seed, but it can take about three years for the bulbs to be big enough to flower and about 5 years before you get big blooms. Freesias require similar aftercare, although with higher temperatures and light levels. They require a very warm dormant period to induce the formation of flower buds for next year. Also in cold climates they usually need to be dug up and stored as they are not frost hardy, unlike hyacinths. They are naturally winter flowering plants of the sub tropics or warm Mediterranean climate, and so can be difficult to grow in cold climates.
My hyacinth isnt dead looking, but she is droopy, should I trim the flowers now, or wait until the flowers die?
I would wait for the flowers to die, droopy leaves are usually caused by lack or water or low light levels. They will probably stay droopy if it's low light levels which has caused it, but droopy leaves are not usually a big problem for the health of the plant as long as they are green. Depending on the temperature hyacinths usually keep their green leaves for a month or more after flowering has finished.
Is it okay to prop up the flowers with a small post? My husband gave me hyacinth for Valentine's day. I was worried they would get damaged, so I posted them to stand up straight with a tie. Hoping this wasn't wrong. Thanks for your advice! 👍😊
Yes, you've done the right thing, sometimes the blooms can be very heavy and will flop over. Just make sure the tie is loose so it doesn't cut the stem. Then remove the post once the flowers have died back.

I just purchased the bulb 2 weeks ago in a glass globe type of holder from aldis. OMG it bloomed today 1/14/2021 and smells incredible. however my question is at the same day it blossomed it sprouted 4 green stems down into the water. What am i to do?? I am a newbie at this any info is appreciated
Sounds like it might be leaves or new bulbs forming, if you can carefully pull the green shoots out of the water, but be careful not to pull the root out the water as they will be almost impossible to put back in without breaking.

Hello there. I bought a forced hyacinth in a glass container with a neck. When I bought it, the roots had already come out. I put my hyacinth near a window and it bloomed in a week or so. I'm noticing that some of the flowers are becoming mushy and really soft. What should I do?
+Esther B. When all the flowers go like that you will need to cut the flower stem off like in the video above. Unfortunately our houses are a little too warm and so hyacinth flowers do not last long. If you want to prolong the flowering keep them in a cool room. Because your hyacinth is grown in a glass container with water it won't have enough energy to flower next year as it need nutrients from the soil to build up its energy for next years flowering. If you start adding a little bit of liquid fertiliser when you top up the water it may give the plant enough food for flowering next year. Keep it in a sunny location and feed it with a balanced feed for the first few weeks, such as miracle grow or baby bio, and then switch to a high potassium feed for the rest of its life, such as Tomorite. If the water goes cloud or green you will need to replace the water with fresh water. Keep the plant growing in a sunny windowsill, until its leaves start to die. You will find that the leaves will grow about three times the size after its finished flowering.Once its died back to just a bulb you can plant it in your garden, if you live somewhere which has winters which are not extremely cold, i.e. not beow -20C (-4F). If you live in the tropics let me know and there is something different you have to do. Unfortunately its pretty hard to grow a hyacinth for a long time in a glass vase without soil so most people just throw the plant out after flowering, or once the leaves look too messy. Its a shame because its so nice to see its roots grow in water, but really its happiest in soil.

Can these be kept indoors by a sunny window after cutting back? If I put them outside the deer may eat them and I don’t want to bring bugs in the house.
Hyacinths are toxic so deer shouldn't eat them, but you can keep them on a sunny windowsill, just make sure its not a hot room. They will go dormant faster than if outside and they will need a cool period in autumn for them to root and get ready for flowering next year.

Where do I get the feed for Hyacinth, and how do I feed throughout the spring and summer?
In early spring I feed it with a balanced feed, then I use tomato feed in late spring and summer to encourage it to flower flower well next year, any feed low in nitrogen is good. You can buy feeds from garden centres, diy stores or online.

Yes, this would be a good way of collecting a few seeds, but still allowing the plant to put most of it's energy back into it's bulb.

Yes, but you will need to give it the dry dormant period over summer once the leaves die, and then in autumn you will need to give the plant colder temperatures and start watering again. As long as you don't live in the tropics putting the pot outside will allow the weather to do all this naturally, as long as the soil is not soggy. Rain and damp soil over summer is ok.
