Commemorating the 10th anniversary since Kenji Eno's sudden passing, we asked his colleagues, friends and family to reminisce on this unique creator.
Always one step ahead in the game industry, Kenji Eno is behind cult titles, such as "D" or "Enemy Zero", one-of-their-kind interactive movies, "Real Sound: Kaze no Regret", an innovative title in accessibility, or "D2" on the Dreamcast.
This documentary is an homage to his memory, work, and legacy.
Thanks to Hideo Kojima, Fumito Ueda, Pierre Taki, Tadanobu Asano, Kazutoshi Iida, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Asako Noguchi, Hideto Yamada, Hiroko Minamoto, Kenichi Nishi, Yutaka Saito and Yuka Iino for their kind participation.

We remember Eno San. We play his games, we honor his legacy. He is gone, his memory lives on.
The artistic value of this channel is nothing short than superb, thank you for your hard work, Archipel team.
Thank you! 🙏
I thank you with all my heart for putting this together! Couldn't have asked for a better Christmas gift!
Thank you, happy holidays!
I've been waiting for this documentary for months. Eno was a visionary far ahead of his time. The greats always leave us before the world can begin to understand them.
Reading this brought tears to my eyes. Could not agree more.
Hope the wait was worth it. Between his indie game & "direct-to-user" approach, use of Laura as a virtual actress or accessibility, there are indeed many themes where Eno was really ahead of his time.
It was absolutely worth the wait, very well executed and beautiful tribute. Bravo.@@ArchipelDocumentaries
Thank you for the inside look at this rebellious creator. I knew he was special when I heard he made a game for the blind.
Thank you. Real Sound is indeed still a reference to this day in terms of accessibility for blind players.
thank you for your work. Eno's passing is maybe one of the only times I really felt hurt personally about someone I didn't know. I was so excited he had returned to gaming only for him to be taken from us not shortly after.
Thanks for watching. Many of us would have loved to see what Eno would have created if he were still alive.
Truly touching, inspiring, and beautiful. I had known some of these anecdotes from Kenji's Interview with 1Up a while before his passing, but was so touching to hear it recollected by his good friends. You can feel how much Kenji meant to all of their lives, and can only hope his stories continue to inspire others out there.
Thank you for creating this :)
Thanks for watching!
Fallen, but never forgotten. Thanks a lot for this documentary.
Thanks for watching!
A truly special person and a remarkable and important documentation of his spirit. Thank you for working so hard on this incredible work.
Thanks for watching!
Best christmas gift ever, thank you. Mr Eno is a legend.
Thank you and happy holidays!
RIP Kenji Eno. Never did play Enemy Zero, but I have a walkthrough video of that game in my hard drive. Wish I could have known of it and played it sooner.
It's never too late to try it out!
@@ArchipelDocumentaries Maybe one day :)
I was crying at last part. Legacy. Eno Kenji is grand person. Now and then we make our something new world.
Thank you @yuichitsuruta!
Just knowing we can’t get more games by him brings a real tear to my eye. No one made art like him.
I've been waiting patiently for this since the teaser was first shown. Thank you for the early Christmas present.
Thank you, hope you enjoyed!
The work you're doing here is superbly underrated. Such respect and class
Thank you!
Thank you for this amazing documentary and video on Kenji Eno. Im glad we are all remembering him 12 years later since he passed❤
Oh man! The last part is so sad. So many possibilities, so many people still wanting to work with Kenji and achieve new things and yet, he made so much in such a short period of time... Great video as always.
Could not thank you guys enough for putting together so many incredible people on this documentary.
Thank you, Eno has truly had a great influence on a lot of people, many of which are still active as creators to this day.
Thank you for this beautiful documentary. Eno was indie before there was the term Indie developer. Such a personality.
Thanks for watching!
No way. I thought this would be locked behind a paywall or something. But truly, in the style of Eno, you just put it up for free.
Thank you. I hope this gets a billion views and eventually Eno's games get some kind of collection.
The intent has always been to make the content as accessible as possible, hopefully it can help more people discover Eno's philosophy and titles along the way.
He was a true maverick and storyteller. His contributions sadly under appreciated, especially here in the states. It takes people like us to keep his memory alive and front and center. His legacy deserves it.
In 1997, as video games were gradually becoming more visually stunning and elaborate with the evolution of hardware, ENO went against this trend by creating 'Real Sound,' a game devoid of visuals with only audio.
The game's advertisement used braille.
Over 25 years ago, there was someone daring enough to do something so intriguing.
At that time, I revered him as a figure akin to a punk rocker.
Real Sound was indeed a pioneering achievement in terms of accessibility. Hopefully something similar can still be achieved this day.
it was a beautiful video, I had no idea that there was such an influential person in the video game scene that I was so unaware of, from the sorrowful words of his friends and acquaintances I understand how incredible he was, thank you for your incredible work on this video
Thanks for the kind word!
fantastic work as always. Thank you so much for this document.
Thank you!
Best documentaries on YT! THank you a billion times!
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for giving us such a touching and beautiful journey through Kenji Eno's life.
You guys are amazing 🙌🏾✨️
Thanks for the kind word!
Thank you Archipel. I knew this was going to be both beautiful and emotional and it truly was. D and Enemy Zero had the biggest impact on me as a teenager, especially Enemy Zero. Incredible and unique experiences I'll never forget.
It's clear that through family, friends and colleagues that Kenji Eno has left a lasting impact. Thanks for putting all this together. An amazing documentary for an amazing talent.
Thanks for the kind word!
Beautiful. From start to finish.
Thank you!

Thank you for this translation! I learned of Eno's work through a playthrough of "D", and was impressed by the ambition of it, and I would love to try "D2" sometime in the future. I was also surprised to learn that Eno was also a big YMO and Ryuichi Sakamoto fan, and I enjoyed his own arrangements of their works. Truly, a resonant calling.
I have so much respect for all of these creators you are genius. Thank you for making the best games a kid in the 90s could ever wish they could play. Kenji Eno was so ahead of his time.
Another piece of art ! I'll have to watch that one later though, it's pretty long. Thank you for your hard and quality work, and will be happy to tip you when I'm done watching it. Merry Christmas guys !
Thank you, take your time and hope you enjoy!
Truely felt like a visual love letter for every creators out there
Such an impressive work!
Eno's lifework was definitely an ode to creation as a whole. Thanks for watching!
Watched this again with English subtitles (didn't know about that the first time). I was very touched. I never knew Kenji Eno personally, but I was so wrapped up into his music & his games at the time, it felt like I knew him. So many great memories such as...playing "D" over & over until I found all 9 beetle locations. Playing endless matches against friends in "Trip'D". Feeling on edge like never before in a game with "Enemy Zero". Getting the "God Of Hunter" trophy in "D2" for taking out 99 of each animal. Thanks for the documentary.
Wow, just incredible. I watched this whole thing from start to finish. It is truly incredible that content this amazing is free. I have done my own research and learnt about Kenji Eno, but the level of insight you have provided is fascinating. I feel I have similar goals and personality to Eno, partly why I'm interested in him. It feels like a shame that as soon as he was getting back on his feet, he passed away. I feel he was rebellious just doing whatever he wanted, and when expectations arose he felt the pressure hard. I believe staying out of the limelight was beneficial to him, so he could be the creator he wanted to be.
I've been following this project since February, and the wait was worth it. Well done, Archipel.
Thanks a lot for the kind word!
Wow you guys went far and beyond with this one!!!! Amazing!!!! Thank you.
Thank you!
I thank you with all my heart!!!
The thing you guys doing....
Just thank you..
Thanks for the kind word!
Such a great documentary remembering Eno-san. Thank you!
Amazing documentary! I wasn't aware of the importance of his work and how he affected other creators like Kojima and Mizuguchi. More videos like these would be awesome. Thanks and hello from Brazil.
Obrigado from Japan!

Much like Satoshi Kon, I consider Kenji Eno another brilliant mind that was taken from us far too soon. They had so many gifts left to give.
Indeed, as you can imagine Satoshi Kon is another great mind that fascinates us as well.
Thank you so much for this. Some of the best content on YT
Thanks for the kind word!
I haven't played any of his games but it was a really touching documentary. I thought his wife was really brave at the end and the memory of his travel to San Fransisco was hilarious; a great tribute.
Stunning documentary, thank you Archipel!! Very inspiring.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for putting this together! I attended the Archipel Caravan event in Tokyo as well, and having seen the exhibition I have a much clearer picture now of Eno and his creative prowess.
Admittedly, I’ve never heard of Eno. I almost think it’s a crime that I haven’t. As an aspiring creator myself, his (literally) indomitable spirit as well as his drive to entertain and surprise people through any medium he touched was very inspiring. It is difficult to put Eno in a box and label him simply as a “game creator” due to how many mediums he dabbled in, which reminded me a little of Yoneyama Mai. I think it’s difficult to strictly call her an animator, illustrator or a director as well due to the range of things she does. Indeed, perhaps true, boundary-pushing creatives simply don’t have bounds themselves.
Above all, from what I’ve seen of Eno, it seems that his strength wasn’t just to create, but to make anything interesting. Whether it was just a hell of an experience with friends, comical marketing tactics, or anything else, he seemed to be someone people could look at, shake their head, laugh and say “well, that was crazy, and I probably won’t be seeing anything like that anytime soon”.
Eno truly was one of a kind. Glad that I heard about him now through this feature but wish that I knew about him sooner.
Thank you Archipel!
Thanks for watching and for attending Archipel Caravan.
There's absolutely no shame in hearing about Eno for the first time. We're glad we could get your attention around him and understand the influence he's had on people over the years.
Wow. I really felt like l went through a journey with this one. Thank you for honoring and bringing all these creators to the spotlight.
Man, just finished this and I'm a lot of words
Kenji Eno was one of my heroes that I admired growing up and the Work he did was truly one of a kind. D was my first exposure to him and was pretty engrossing as an adventure game and Enemy Zero was while at times difficult, was a very good and unique survival horror game.
D2 for me, is one of my favorite games and Stood as one of the first and greatest examples of how special video games could. It felt very personal and unlike anything that has been made before and since then. I can never think of a game that gave me a similar feeling by the end, that D2 did and I thank eno for making that.
His Passing 10 years ago was a real loss, He made games that were unlike anything on the market and put a lot of himself in them. Not Only that, He was an equally very talented musician and him scoring music for his games made it feel more personal of him.
Knowing there were others in the industry that knew and admired him is very heartwarming.
Seeing this makes me want to go back to the games he made again.
Thanks a lot for this Documentary of a man who had one of the most unique voices in games and one who was truly ahead of his time.
Thanks a lot for the kind words!
Thank you so much, this is a wonderful tribute.
Thanks for watching!
Really awesome that we can have Mr. Kojima for this interview! Thank you so much!
Was really awesome! I don't know many of the people who participated but I'm thankful to hear their experiences.
Thanks for watching!
Regrettably I have not known Eno-san other than hearing great things about Enemy Zero.
But I'm more than glad to have blessed with this feature and get to know the legend.
Thank you Archipel.
He has been a massive influence on my work since I discovered him around 15 years ago. I am so happy to see more documentation out there. Occasionally I think about planting the seeds from my copy of Real Sound, but I can't bring myself to open the package.
Been waiting for this to drop since it was announced a few months back. It feels good to finally be able to watch it. Honestly, at the time of writing this comment, I haven't played any of Eno's games, but I have been reading and watching interviews with him or about the games he worked on, and believe that his vision and way of doing things influenced a lot of japanese videogame authors for the past two decades. It was hard to not tear up for most of the doc. Thank you for making this (as well as all the other docs/interviews that you've done through the years). Love from some portuguese fella.
Thank you for your continued support!
More to come on the channel very soon!
Been waiting for this all year.
We hope it was worth the wait :)
I often think of Kenji Eno. I miss him a lot. Like many, I knew it with the release of D, for me it was on the Sega Saturn.
I continued to follow his work after that. His death shocked me. He was so young, so talented. It is unfair.
He no longer wanted to play a game with Laura unfortunately. To my great regret.
I'm French and unfortunately we don't talk much about Kenji. Some players my age have forgotten him. New generations don't know him. 😢
Thank you for this very beautiful documentary. Which I watched alone on Christmas Day. Thank you so much
Merci!
As creators, he did what himself want to do, how he want to do it.
I am sure his life was a happy one and he left this world satisfied to the end.
Did the times call him? No, he must have led the times saying, "Hey, come here."
Indeed, Eno's lifework was dedicated to creation as a whole.
I've been checking regularly for updates during months. I honestly thought the documentary has been cancelled at so me point. And then, just days before the end of the year...
Thank you Archipel. And may we never forget Eno-san.
I love just how contemplative and hypnotising your videos are. It was worth the wait.
Thank you for putting this together!
Thank you, hope you enjoyed.
Growing older, I don't have a lot of heroes left or people I can say that inspire me anymore... But I do believe Kenji Eno is still one of those people that left us too soon. I wish he was still with us.
congratulations on the release! cant wait to watch ❤
Thank you, hope you enjoy!
Beautiful, heartbreaking, and a monument to the power of creators like Kenji Eno who live to create and to share their love of creation with the World. Thank you, Archipel.
Thanks for watching! Eno's life was an ode to creation indeed.
The first time I learned about Kenji Eno was Enemy Zero. It was a game I was so intrigued with on a lot of levels. And the more I learned about Eno, the more I realized we were very much alike - eccentric and full of ideas on how things can and should be different.
RIP Eno-san. And with Enemy Zero, I want to thank you for giving me the most intense levels of fear my life has ever experienced.
I miss Kenji Eno. He was a true visionary and we lost him at such a young age.
Oh heck yeah. So glad it's been uploaded finally.
Thanks for watching!
First time I've ever listened to Fumito Ueda, creator of my all-time favourite game 'Ico'. Lots of affection and admiration for Kenji Eno whose games I haven't yet experienced.
Im from spain, barcelona.Back to 1995/6 even my friends and myself knew the name and the image of kenji eno.I remember sawing japanese magazines ,we dont understand anything at this moment, but everybody knew his name.Enemy zero at their time was an incredible game and i started to follow every game he made.An avanced man of his time.My respects
Got curious to watch just to see Fumito Ueda but stayed for the amazing individual Kenji Eno was, I never played his games but if there's something in common with my favourite game devs (like fumito ueda) is that they all break the norm of how games can be perceived as and how they are made...
Ideas, and concepts never done before being brought to life which makes me excited to see something new despite playing games for two decades now.
With that said, I might as well check his games sometime because i'm sure it will be a unique experience!
Thanks for this video!
Whenever one of your notifications pops up, it brightens my day, I was finally able to sit up and watch the full video in peace. Your work truly inspire me, thank you so much! I wasn't familiar with Kenji Eno but you just show a ton of respect to every creator you portray and this one was incredibly fascinating and I loved every second of it.
Thanks for the kind word - we'll work to make more of these notifications pop :)
What a beautiful tribute. His life was short, but he certainly lived it intensely doing what he wanted to do, that is admirable.
Thank you 🙏
It’s nice to see him recognized in this film. Rest in peace, Kenji. I so wanted to see more of his work. He would have gone on to make horror masterpieces that were like no other. I’ll always at least be thankful we got D2. It was truly the largest and greatest game he had made. I would have so loved to see what he would have done afterwards. Especially on today’s hardware.
You could say that Kenji Eno was "Hideo Kojima" before 'Hideo Kojima'.
I would like to play a Kenji Eno's Games Remaster/Remake Collection made in collaboration with game creators like Fumito Ueda and/or Hideo Kojima himself who participate in making this documentary someday...
Hideo Kojima admits himself that Kenji Eno was a big influence, Eno's methods were truly ahead of his time.
While watching this video, all I could think about is what kind of game would Kenji Eno make, given a huge budget like Kojima gets nowadays.
I genuinely wonder how would he react seeing Kojima Productions becoming such a successful studio while still making more "arthouse" games.
Art is long, life is short.
Ars longa vita brevis.
If Kenji Eno was alive, he would have made the craziest most realistic VR game ever, he was a man that wanted to create weird stuff and cutting edge stuff, at his time, CD-Rom pc games and the 3DO were the ultimate cutting edge for the living room, also the 90s were a very "auteur" decade, in cinema, music, tv and of course videogames, many of the creative minds that created several out of the box masterpieces came from his team, like Fumito Ueda the creator of ICO a game that was copied and studied to death and of course Shadow of the Colossus, i still think the last guardian is incredible and a very original creation that was too copied even when it was not released; love his stuff, very original
We hope it was worth the wait!
Thank you for this. Truly beautiful documentary.
Thanks for watching!
What a wonderful work! Thanks

I'm from Brazil. Fumito Ueda, Kojima, and Hidetaka Miyazaki are widely celebrated among gamers here. Unfortunately, I only discovered the brilliance of Kenji Eno watching this film. This documentary about him is truly sublime. Besides to reflecting on Kenji Eno's significant legacy, it's also crucial to recognize the importance of prioritizing our health and well-being. Thank you, Archipel, for providing this incredible content and offering the opportunity to learn about such an outstanding creator.

An Archipel video day is a good day! Thank you for the hard work and dedication.
Thank you, hope you enjoyed!
Great documentary. Thanks of an Eno fan from Brazil.
Thank you for teaching me about this wonderful creative. I had grown up seeing his games on shelves and was completely unaware of how praised they were or how talented and revolutionary this man was as I was growing up during these prime gaming eras. When I saw the cover of D memories of the Sega Saturn and dreamcast days flashed in my memory. I wish I had gotten to know more about him before now. Archipel you guys did an amazing job 💯💯💯 please continue to bring us these stories of the talented artists that helped evolve the Japanese gaming and creative scenes.
