Hi, great video!! Could you tell me how big the bowl is and also at the very start there was a branch sticking out of the bowl which I thought looked awesome - what was it? Also if you list the plants that are good for oxygen that would be great! Can’t wait to get started!!! Thanks again.
Love this video, mate! I’m about to set up a large bowl of my own and I’m wondering is it better to add any aqua soil above the gravel to provide nutrients for the plants?
hai i was wondering how the maintenance process is and how often water should be changed, additionally i wanted to know what to do about algae built up if any.
The tank is really beautiful, I liked it. Just 2 suggestions: 1) Endler's livebearers would probably look a little better among all that vegetation than the rice fish, just my opinion. I personally kept a paradise fish with some white clowd mountain minnows in a similar, but larger tank. 2) The rocks look great, but they probably take away the valuable water space from the fish. With less rocks you could probably add a few more colourful fish.
The endler will eat the baby shrimp though. Maybe the rice fish would as well, but he mentioned them being taken out when they get bigger. I have a nano aquarium in a fish bowl, like in the video. Without filters/heaters and such. I only have Red Sakura shrimp. No snails, no fish. I do a 10% water change two times a week. Then I take out the dirty water from the bottom in between the stones and fill up with tap water. I don't have substrate, only stones on the bottom. And java mos on drift wood, and a lava stone with an anubias inside. They are doing great and are breeding like mad.
Lovely display. I have just started the aquascaping hobby. Can't get the link to the site to work. Please can you tell me where you purchased the bowl? Thanks
I had the same experience. I haven't re-scaped mine as in the end i liked it but i think to get that effect you have to do a really exaggerated slope going much higher at the back than you think, plus he also has the height of the stones. Another factor is if you have a larger bowl which mine is (45 cm diameter) i suspect the flattening effect is more (and possibly the magnifying effect once the water is in is less than in a smaller bowl?).

May I suggest you either lower the volume of the music or increase your narration voice, I keep having to turn the volume up when you talk and then down when the music comes on. eg at 7:30 you sounded really quiet, then the music comes on much louder. Thanks.
As for the bacteria already being on the plants from your previous tank filter, that makes sense. How do you get bacteria though if the plants are going to be brand new and from scrap?
The plants will always have some amount of bacteria in it, because even the brand new ones will be coming from an established tank that has beneficial bacterias in it.
How often do you feed the fish/shrimp? I've looked at a few no filter builds now, but never found the answer. Would it be possible to build a completely self-sustained aquarium? So with no regular feeding at all?
You ofcourse need to feed the inhabitants as normal, since it’s such a small amount of water, you need to be careful to not let the water chemistry change too often, so it’s actually high maintenance, you have to do a water change more often, and make sure the temp isn’t fluctuating or your shrimp won’t survive
Beautiful bowl! What is your sense for how many rice fish would be the max biological load on this setup? (I have an almost identical bowl, also thickly planted. The 6 baby guppies I put in are now about 20. The females have never got bigger than about a quarter of the usual size, but that does not prevent them from having babies!)
Nicely chosen music. Engaging and moody without being distracting… As to the aquarium construction and scaping, I'm troubled most by the bowl itself; in all the shots, from the opening frames when it is set down empty on the table and onwards, it seems made made of awfully thin glass. For both aesthetics and safety I would have liked a more robust, thicker bowl.
@AquaViva Does fish bowl require filteration like spong filters? How do we deal with Algae growing on fish bowls? How to keep plants healthy, my plants turned black and died.
how do you keep it warm during the winter, i live in florida. also how do you know how many fish i can keep in that fishbowl like i want pleco, betta, shrimp and guppies and snail
Looking like a great project during lockdown 🙄, just smashed out a few of your videos and you have skill great work I hope you keep up your videos! Maybe a video on different type of aquatic plants and how they grow and what each plats strengths and weaknesses are? Also what's the difference with not using soil in the jar tank and non in the round bowl tank here?
I would suspect soil for plants in such a tight space may lead to plant overgrowth and increase in waste production. Without soil, plants are obliged to absorb nitrogenous waste and promote equilibrium
Does anyone know of a good supplier for the livestock - preferably just snails and maybe a few shrimp to start with - and plants in Ireland. Kildare/Dublin area preferably. Would prefer not to order online via the post at present due to delays caused by pandemic + Christmas season starting. An aquarium in either a fishbowl or pickle jar with some snails and maybe a shrimp or two would be the ideal size for my small living area and are as enjoyable to sit and watch as fish are. Possibly more so with the added plants. Thanks to anyone who can help,
@Chris local pet shop only deal in supplies, don't even sell plants. There is a decent one further up in Dublin but while they sell rectangular aquariums they don't have large bowls, they sell plastic plants not real ones and only have tropical fish. There is a garden centre this side of Dublin which sell pond plants and the like but again, no small cold water fish, apparently I'm unlikely to get any here in Ireland because the customers want tropical fish indoors and Koi or similar outdoors.
@@MrStevie15 No. Might be able to get some plants from Newlands Cross Garden Centre because they deal with ponds and sell pond plants but apparently not small fish. Having a problem finding a large round bowl as well, rectangular aquariums are easy but speaking to people who specialise in small fish for themselves they seem to prefer a round bowl that they can swim round and round in rather than a box where they hit the end and have to turn around. I have a large ceramic plant pot, no hole in the base, which I have been using to grow indoor plants (no hole = no water leaking) and have spoken to a lad in Singapore who tells me that they use these sort of containers all the time in Japan for fish, usually rice fish/mendaka, and it should be fine when planted up. So I'm probably going to go with that for the moment at least and just hope I can find some small cold water fish. Any suggestions as to a good type, the living area can get down to around 5degC if it's really cold out (we'd rather put on a jumper rather than turn up the heating) which rice fish have no problems with but I'm not so sure about other breeds. I don't want tropical and I don't really want a goldfish - had them before and I like them but I need to ensure the container is really well planted up to cope with all the waste they produce, not sure I can do that because I can't find half the plants I used to keep in their ''tank'' before (20 years ago now). To me it's an indoor water garden with fish, the fish feed the plants and the plants keep the fish healthy and mean I don't need filters or anything like that.
Hey AquaViva!!! Quick question for ya' What lighting did you use for that bowl? I plan on aquascaping a large rounded vase, but I can't find the right lighting that stands up, most aren't properly made for fish + plants.
May I know how much in total was it to get the decorations? We also have a glass bowl (we haven't measured how much it holds) that we planned to turn into an aquarium. Probably enough to hold two fishes
Tannins are certainly not the end of the world; they make the water a little brown, but also release beneficial minerals. Although more water changes are needed especially if you want clear (not brown) water in your aquarium!
A Betta would need a heater (80F. 27C), and they WILL jump out of an uncovered tank or bowl. As for shrimp, it depends on the betta. Some will allow it, but I had one that even attacked a snail I put in.
some species do require it and more space than this, rice fish in particular dont like current and it can even be detrimental to them as they live in rice fields with minimal flow, shrimp dont really need it either, the plants and bacteria are doing the filtering. They're likely using either a pump on the end of a tube, with the pump in a bucket or an aquarium vaccum or possibly even just a simple siphon.
