Social Worker Using Art to Help Homeless People

- This last week I had a wonderful experience. Urban Ministry in Charlotte, North Carolina, invited me out to visit homeless tent camps in the city. When we returned to their facility, Urban Ministry invited me to participate in the theater workshop.
In the past, I shared a few videos on how art, music, dance, and theater can help homeless people. But this was the very first time I have participated in an art workshop with homeless people. It will remain one of the most memorable experiences of this year.
Only an hour before the theater class, I happened to visit a homeless encampment under a freeway. I talked to a young homeless woman at the tent camp, but I wasn't sure I would ever see her again. To my surprise, the woman was in the theater class.
Although I do kind of wish I had filmed the workshop, cameras change everything. Seeing homeless people write and create their own theater productions was mind-blowing in many ways. So much community. So much healing. So much compassion and understanding. If I had broken out my camera, things might have been different, and at the core of our work is relationships come first.
Heather Bartlett is the therapeutic art coordinator at the Urban Ministry Center. There are no words to express how much Heather impressed me. Heather truly loves people and she loves her work.
Heather invited me back for this art class where we asked the people attending for their permission to go on video.
Art and music programs are a hard sell to nonprofits because funders don't see the value, and without funding, nothing happens. Please watch this video and share it with everyone you know that works in the homeless sector. I guarantee you programs like this can help people who are suffering from layers of trauma start to heal for more than talking to someone sitting behind a desk.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.
I wish this video had been longer!!!! The people seem so much more relaxed and peaceful in this setting. It would be nice to ask them what they were thinking when they are at the art workshop. Hopefully the serenity gained this way will help them in their struggles to gain housing and employment. The lady dressed in yellow, who is staff, has a calming effect of her own!
This has got to be one brightest ideas ever if I would've had a place to go like this when I was homeless it would've been more bearable !!
@@jamieonh yes Thank You I now own my own home remarried to a wonderful woman for 26 yrs just celebrated on the 4 of this month unfortunately my health is not the greatest but I have God in my heart and that's all I need aside from my wife of course !! GOD BLESS YOU !!
LOVE IT!! ART THERAPY HEALS! 😊💜👍
What a thoughtful and kind woman to get this up and running for the homeless, They are lucky to have her! 👍😊
I agree!
Beautiful people. Love. Scotland. xxx
We need more programs like this on the west coast
I agree. Los Angeles is doomed!
We need this more across the whole country! 💗
And east coast. The homeless here in Maine lots die during the winter or choose to go to jail just to survive. It's bad.
In Seattle Washington USA we have PathwithArt.
I'm working on it; as fast as I can, hit me up!
It touched my heart to hear the guy describe how nothing is useless and everything in life has a purpose . Love his artwork too . A lot of them are very talented and you really see there happier more playfully side shine through !
What he said and his art is very powerful
They are amazing artists. Thanks for sharing.
Making people feel human again...because that’s what they are...rich or poor.
🙏❤️✝️🌈💪🏼🛡♾ beautiful endeavors
What words can't express. Awesome.
Great video
I'm very grateful for all that you do and doing art is a good outlet to be able to do something inspiring and it helps in many ways thank you for giving them love and care
I love this concept, not only is art therapeuticbut it also is a way to help the voiceless and displaced speak their truth. I'm a disabled Veteran,Therapist and living in a city where homelessness is an abstract backdrop to the city skyline. It doesn't matter which direction you are driving you cant help but be affected by those who are struggling to make their lives better. I want to open a Coffeehouse where I can employ Veterans and those who are trying to find their way out ,I hope to deliver this under a not for profit status where a percentage of the proceeds will go directly back into the community to help establish normalcy in their lives. Thanks for always delivering to us what most people often ignore bravo, and Bonzai.👩🏾🌾📿💜 #invisiblepeople
I love this. As an artist, and as one who follows (and videos) the music scene, as well as some of the art-scene, in Austin..., it has given me a great idea. I am talking it over with some district folk I happen to know, downtown, and I am going to see if it is possible to start something similar.
It will not be visual art. Or, it will not be that, mainly.. I think we can do something wonderful.
Cheers!
@@Inf7cted Yes, this is exactly what I mean. Our entertainment district, downtown, is (sadly) full of people with no homes. Austin is zoning them out of houses. So, there has to be something positive to do for them.
(I just don't want it to be your typical church choir. I want it to be new music// I do a lot of music video, in town, and am getting to know a lot of musicians, and want to see if we can get something going.)
@@Inf7cted I would just advise you to be careful, but, you may also need to take a chance. If you go, make SURE You have your own resources and can (at least) financially take care of yourself. DO not move in with a guy unless you really do know him well.
(I know you didn't ask, but, this would be my advice.)
Orange is a great color
That spiderman was fire!
Beautiful artwork!!!....🎨✏💗🌞😀👍💕💙
Dark blue and blacks.......this is wonderful. Thanks for what you show us!

This is TRULY AWESOME!!
Love what you are doing spreading awareness. Cheers
Wow, this is wonderful. And interesting to see. Although. You see them in a different light. From tbeir tent they are being appreciated by someone that has opened the doors for them of free opportunity. A little time out if their day to relax and enjoy themselves with a little
Bit of art. Thanx for this. God Bless.
Awesome space for people to chill. Carnegie Centre in Vancouver was like that (in the heart of the downtown jungle), there was a nice library and place for art, talent night and place for children to be themselves too.

@@BenChod3 yes please what's the website
Beautiful
I love this I wish I could be part of a community like that
I think all homeless people should stay in a place like that.
Lovin this so hard
I would love if one of them is able to use the art to find housing. If they had extra canvases and extra paint, they could paint landscapes and cityscapes, and sell the paintings as a job they created themselves, and hopefully people would actually buy those paintings enough for the people in this class to be able to find housing.
Also, the social worker could paint one painting in a way that helps bring awareness to homelessness.
That's just a thought I had.
I wish we were treated like that here in Las Vegas instead of constant harrasement.
Hello, and what a Fantastic video! I like this model to help folks to have a place to create. Will you let me know how I can reach the place in Charlotte to get information, so that I can start this In my city? I'm an artist and would love to give back to our community.
I'm feeing green...
Not sick green..not smoke green,
But Courage, Nature, and Hope Green.
Willfully spoke these words, while I smoke trees,
That line starts a lil rap for my brokskeezs
And that game, I peep the flow like a bats vein.
Talent is lacking, and whack attracts fame,
Go ask that gang... Gucci this, ma-terialistic bitch,
I'm the Monster that goes bump in the night and I dont act tame.
Stay breathin one step away from homeless,
One breath from even knowing what's next, I just be in the moment
So when time strikes hard and you feel like folding
But you can't cause you got some other shit unfolding
Kicked man while he's down, got his rage on loaded,
But you dont got the energy to make to face show it,
Im a stop there... I dont even rap. Not promoting nothing. Just a people sub. Thats my first written. I'm 27. I of course can freestyle, have freestyled on maybe 5 occasions physically. Maybe like another 15 in my head. I'm an artist though. Thanks love you all🙏 . pray for everyone on hard times.
I live in Nashville. If this is happening here or if someone wants to help me start this up I'd love to do this.
Is there a way I can connect with the art social worker?? I’m a mental health therapist on Texas, and she does stuff that I’d love learn!
This chick majored in social work minored in art obviously

Omg yeah really trying to help these same ppl who been fucking up over and over
Gibsonton steak and cheese

Color? What kind of new psychology is this
Art therapy is good for the soul. It actually helps
Its art therapy it works
Who funds this?
Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte
You help them by helping them get into housing , after the art work they're still going to be homeless.I don't know maybe I'm wrong.
The art work helps them emotionally. They can actually see themselves complete something from start to finish. It makes them feel good about themselves, and boost their self confidence. I believe it will give them the boost they need to be proactive in obtaining a better life, and securing housing.
@@dawnmoore2823 Nah sis I was formerly homeless and I don't wanna paint nor draw any pictures. This idea is far from original. This a real life situation that needs real adult solutions. Not childish preschool-ish methods. People who become homeless are viewed as incompetents. There are too many programs like this and it's ridiculous.
@lakeshiamcgee3385... That's how it would have been for me.
If I had time to paint, I had time to look for a job or utilize a program to help me achieve my goal of having a place to live.
This would have done nothing for me -- but if it helps them to feel better
Fine.
I know that for me it would have been useless.
@DanaeLaurenTolbert1... As one who was once homeless?
I agree.
Microphone mistake
It gives them I think some dignity and respect for themselves
not sure what you mean
@@InvisiblePeople I meant my first wording was messed up
@@karenlouks3636 thought maybe there was a problem
Yes I didn't check 4 mistakes
absolutely criminal that the state wont give these people homes
How is this art suppose to get the homeless off the streets? Just a complete waste of time
Did you even watch the video?
This is NOT helpful to homelessness!! I am so over this kind of performative, cookie cutter solutions. Once again this is a superficial. Sadly, this person is using this method, which is not original to be quite frank, to say, "Look, I am helping the homeless." Not trying to be disrespectful but I have to speak up. As someone who was formerly homeless this is a complete slap across the face and insulting. Being homeless is not equivalent to incompetency. Drawing pictures is not a solution to this growing problem. If that were the case, let's paint away poverty, racism, other socioeconomic issues.
You are so ignorant-- keyboard warrior talking crazy.
How is this really helping homelessness? Think about it. Her entire description on their “mission”, is very vague..How will this help people find homes? If the art gives you hope, good for you I guess? But getting them off the streets just for a couple hours, just so they can paint a picture?..Not really helping homelessness as a whole in my opinion..
Many people on the streets suffer from severe trauma. The traditional social work model is to have the client sit in front of a desk. How much healing does that provide to you think? Which model helps the social worker understand their client to provide the right support? I could go on and on.
@@InvisiblePeople I agree. Plus it exercises their imagination, de stresses them, eases their anxiety....it also makes them feel accepted, not judged, and being a part of something. They deserve to be seen and heard too. These are not small things.
Alex Psychedelic, i suggest you take up some art classes and experience art yourself. You never know, you might even learn how to use your imagination. 🤷🏻♀️
Exactly! People do things to make themselves look good. This is total ridiculousness. People don't want to give from the heart because it takes sacrifice, time, and effort. I was formerly homeless and this is just an insult to my intellect and intelligence. The reason why I developed my businesses. I took sacrifice, blood, sweat, and tears. I really want to help people.
