”The reason I chose Nr. 19, and I think the reason many players chose Nr. 19 and played the way they did, was because of Nr. 19 of the New York Islanders, Bryan Trottier. I wore his number in his honor, he was a player I looked up to and admired. I hope I honored his number well”

The Best Two Way Pivot Player I’VE EVER SEEN!!! I still wear his Rookie Isles Jersey every game at Hershey (Bears). He was the LIGHTNING!!!

Shannon - The reason he was taken 22nd overall may be that the NHL was in competition with the WHA at the time so they allowed NHL teams to take one underage player (less than 20). 20 year old's are more known so that may be why he slipped to the second round. He also holds a couple of scoring records that will be hard to break. longest scoring streak over multiple seasons in the playoffs 27 games (1980-1982 43 points) and longest scoring streak in one playoff year 1981 (29 points).

The Lemieux-Jagr-Francis-era Penguins had an impressive team, but once Trottier retired they never made the Stanley Cup Final again. As a Pens fan from long before that era, I never thought that was a coincidence.

Stop to think about all the playoff games BT played, you could nearly add 2 more seasons to his career. The final Cup with the Pens, Bryan took on the role as defensive specialist, taking most of the defensive draws then heading to the bench. He was the definition of a team player and a true champion!!

Just think, Patrick Marleau grew up relatively short distance from there too. The impact those 2 had on WHL and NHL is quite something. Tiny towns, Huge talents.

I rewatched this after a couple years, and i have a couple issues..lol
First, he actually retired for the 92-93 season and rejoined the Isles again in some capacity.
So his last season was actually 93-94.
    Little mistake, but still. Lol.
After that I remember him playing roller hockey for at least one season for the Pittsburgh Phantoms too.
    Lol.
My other issue is Shannon seems to downplay just how great Trottier was.
He's without a doubt a first ballot HOF'er and I don't think a single person could ever come up with a argument otherwise. It would be absurd!!
Trotts had SIX Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe, a Hart, an Art Ross, the Calder, huge scoring seasons, GREAT defensive play throughout his career, a great leader, 180 something playoff points, he was an elite face-off guy, AND he could play very physical for a smaller guy!!
Trottier is one of the best all around players in NHL history!!!
Also, in Pittsburgh Trotts played a pretty big role at times!
He was a great 3rd line center at that stage of his career, behind Lemieux and Francis.
He chipped in some offense, took TONS of key face offs, played great defense, and threw the body around.
I'm just a little surprised that Shannon had such a ...weak assessment of his career.
    😬
Also.... his 95 point rookie year was the NHL record until Stastny broke it in 81', and when he retired he was the SIXTH highest scorer of all time!!

6 cup rings should automatically get you into the hall, unless you were a back up goalie. Solid gritty player. There are a bunch of players throughout the annals of time in multiple sports that played decently long careers and really added depth and experience to teams needing to get over that hump to win a championship. He's a classy guy, We share the same last name, I get asked all the time, I wish.

I love Brian Trottier, completely under rated player. I wanna say though, I don’t think players get worse as they get older, I think a good part of it is that teams don’t know what your going to do in those first few years because they’re unfamiliar with your play style. I think after you’ve been in the league a few years people get used to your play style and they know where your gonna go, what your gonna try to do, and they can defend against it a lot better than they used too. Claude Giroux isn’t even an exception to that rule, he kind of exemplifies it. They moved him to the wing, it made him a little more unpredictable, and his numbers jumped, same thing happened when Ovi’s goal totals went down and Adam Oates moved him to the right side, bam! His goal totals went back up.

  • @davezarvan

One minor correction to this video: Trottier actually didn't play in the 1992-93 season, he was in the Islanders front office that season. He went back to Pittsburgh in 1993-94 for his final season because of some financial troubles with bad investments. So the stats you have from his final season in Pittsburgh is accurate, just a year too soon.

Great video. When my Pens brought in Trottier for 90-91 it was huge. A proven winner with a ton of heart, he was the perfect 3rd line center behind Lemieux and Francis. Adding Joe Mullen for a second rounder, Murphy for Jim Johnson, Francis, Samuelson, and others that year put together an awesome team.
I was so lucky to get to see all those great players together on that team. Trots was like a kid when they won, even though it was his 5th and 6th cups. One of my favorites growing up.

Or now Olympics that means your one of the best players in Canada .Trottier was asked to play in 81, and 84, and also played when the NHL played Russia in the three games series 79. I am 60. Trottier was never this over looked guy. never ever. He was a league MVP and Isles first Conn smythe winner and at the time his scorer total that year was a record for points in the playoffs. How could he be overlooked? He was the best 2 way player and all star Center on a Dynasty team. They went to 5 cups in a row. they Won 4 in a row. 19 consecutive playoff series. Oilers did not do this, its not close. He won faceoffs and was a force he destroyed guys against the boards and no one could knock him over. For the Isles he was the MAN. Potvin was leader for defense and Bossy was the right wing sniper. Trots was considered the best center in a the game for a few years until Gretzky got there. dont forget they swept the Oilers in their first cup. saying you are more impressed with his second career when he was the best player on a dynasty makes no sense. Actually this is crazy talk Its interesting that he became this role player and leader for the Penguins but His career Islanders was legendary. your point is SO weak it shows you do not know his Islander career to well. how old are you? low 50s? too young to remember his Islander career. Gretzky talked about Trots as to him Trots was the best for yrs until Gretzky took over in 85 or 86.
