Then when the southern part of the Roman Empire (arguable southern Europe at the time) was lost to the muslims, what is now northern Europe was integrated through christianization and conquests. Then the Russians wanted to also be included when originally, what is now Poland and western Ukraine was the limit of "Europe".

    Any question you have about Moroccan foreign policy after independence can pretty much be summed up in two words: "Western Sahara". Everything Morocco does on the world stage is based around finally getting that issue resolved. It's why they applied for the EU, why theres so much tension with Algeria, why they recognized Israel, and why they commited troops to help the US in the Gulf War and the war on Terror.

      Actually Cyprus is part of the eu without being a European country, just because of history, literally Cyprus is an asian country ( middle eastern) and when Morocco said , historical tirs to Europe it didn't mean colonization era , it meant since at least the roman times when Morocco was part of the roman empire, and in medieval times when Morocco literally ruled spain and Portugal for over 200 years or something like that , so it more of the history between the land which literally obvious, north Africa and Europe and the middle east share history together more than with sub Saharan Africa or asia , and its not the same as saying latin American countries can say that to join too , because yes some latin Americans are of european origins and some Moroccans too , but its about the history of being one nation for hundreds of years before medieval and in medieval times, and actually some people literally call the area greater Europe or something like which includes some parts of the middle east ( former roman land) and north Africa for its times and history with Europe, and also culturally north Africa ( Morocco Algeria tunisia ) are close to Spanish Italian Portuguese french cultures , and most of the people speak in dariga whi is kind , literally what Maltese people speak in malta , so its more of like , Morocco tried to say , listen we might be located in the african continent but most of our business history geopolitcs is in Europe so we want to be part of the eu, and actually dome countries like the idea such as Sweden, but some didn't like spain who was trying to be a member at the time and both spain and Morocco were kind of poor nations spain just removed or ended franco dictatorship, and tgey didn't like Morocco in the eu because both offered the same thing agriculture products, anyway im just trying to explain what i think the Moroccan government tried to say

It may make the name a bit inacurate but we can always rename it to European-Mediterranian Union if we want to be more accurate. Culturally it would make sense aswell. There are already many people hailing from the South Mediterranian here in Europe, which I have no issue with because the tension around the migrant issue is the result of an antiquated, unempathetic and inefficient migration system which is in dire need of modernization and extensive reform to process all these migrants and make legal immigration realistically achievable.

    It was fundamentally a political move. Hassan II did not expect the application to proceed formally and he did not try to have Morocco apply in 1984. He deliberately presented his arguments at a political meeting: the objective was to strenghten the economic and political integration of Morocco in the European space.
    It seems, however, that the application proceeded anyway, and, as could be expected, was rejected by the Council on 1 October 1987, on the grounds that Morocco was not a European state (European Parliament, 1998). Note that the actual text of that Council decision is remarkably elusive: it is widely quoted but I have not been able to find it in the catalog of the Council archives.
    Hassan II explained his strategy explicitly in an interview given in December 1988 in the French magazine Le Point (cited by Essebbani, 2008). After saying that he did not plan for Morocco to join the EEC because he was "not able to keep up" with the Common Market, the King said that his strategy was
    to do a little bit like in artillery, the first shot has to be far away, as far away as possible from the target (...) so we just asked for integration.
    Since then, Morocco has signed a free trade Association Agreement with the EU (signed on 26 February 1996, in force on 1 March 2000). In 2008, Morocco was granted "advanced status", which is basically a roadmap for ongoing and future Morocco-EU partnership on economic, social, political, and security issues.

      Well, if it weren’t for France, the Mercosur would close a very important free trade agreement with the EU. I’d argue Argentina (and Uruguay) are more likely to be accepted into the EU than Morocco lol specially with the current rise of nationalism and anti-Islam sentiments. Already millions of Argentinians have dual European citizenship, and still choose to live in Argentina. I’d imagine Morocco being closer and poorer (and lacking basic human rights) would mean a huge influx of migrants to mainland Europe, plus they wouldn’t be able to control the border with the rest of Africa.

    • @RuffzSweatpants
      @RuffzSweatpants 3 месяца назад +1

      @agme8045 right that's why I said Argentina specifically because it has strong historical and cultural ties to Europe which I'd argue are far more stronger than Morocco's since Morocco is still heavily influenced by Arab and Islamic cultures much like other North African nations which simply overshadows any relevant European influences,plus having a mainland African country join the EU whilst simultaneously being a member of the AU is confusing and awkward to be honest and Morocco's sever lack of development that is even lower than some Eastern European countries within the union,low HDI index and human rights as you mentioned would make it restricted from ever joining the EU from the get-go and this all coming from a Moroccan's prespective
