Thank you for this video. I am just starting to learn Pro Tools First, ahead of starting school in a few weeks and taking a Pro Tools class. I was trying today to use my Zoom H4nPro as an interface to record open air with my acoustic guitar, and also tried just using the internal mic on the laptop. I could only get the barest amount of volume out of either method; I feel like it is a set-up issue; am only using the Zoom and the Dell laptop, no preamps, microphones, etc. yet. Any advise on increasing the volume on the internal mic or in Pro Tools?
i love you. 4 hours tryna figure out what’s wrong and why my input interface wasn’t appearing. it was because i recently got to speakers and they were plugged in. when you said make sure ur speakers are first thing on and or last thing off i decided to turn them off. and boom i can record again and choose an input that i want thank you so much!!! new sub n like
I'm glad it helped! But, speakers should be LAST thing on and FIRST thing off. You don't want anything power cycling with the speakers on, or you risk a speaker pop that can damage them over time. Best of luck!

Good morning, follow-up to yesterday's message. I was able to get a little more volume by adjusting the Windows settings and using a microphone plugged straight into the Zoom, but it is still weak. It could just be that my laptop isn't powerful enough for this program. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hi Cato, thanks for the video.I am having an issue with my protools first. The playback engine is not showing any device and there is no options to change either.it's only showing window device.

Informative video, nice job. I've got a gremlin in PT 11 right now I'm struggling to find. I'm getting signal in from my interface but when record is enabled and I begin to play, nothing is writing to the track. I've rerun all the typicals several times to no avail. I am new to PT so it's probably just a button somewhere that I can't find but it's become frustrating. No error msg or anything. The time line is moving, the input meter is bouncing with signal, but just blank space when trying to record. Thanks

Hi Thank you for the video, i have a question. When you are creating the tracks for your session if they are in mono, dose both the inputs and outputs have to be in mono or stereo? I'm studying Sound Production and I'm working on a project. I made sure everything on the mixer and the patch bay was correct, i set the tracks on stereo so this may be one of the issues, i set the I/O as well making inputs and outputs were in stereo, but when i went to check if i had signal coming recording, nothing, no signal. Any tips? thanks

thank you this is great content. however once i get past setting up the correct playback engine and inputs i try to press the recording button and i get an error message saying "no record volumes designated". i've been trying for days to get it to work now. please help.
Press ( alt/opt + I ) That brings up the workspace window, also found in the window menu as New Workspace then select default. There you should see your computer hard drive and any other drives you have connected. The columns are labeled Name, permissions, kind, size, and so on. Click on the letter in the permissions column it can be either T, P or R. You will want to select Record.

so my playback engine is good, but my input 'interface' option is greyed out so i can't even make a selection. Any suggestions?
So I have pro tools first, I have set my mic up, I can see Audio visual on the track I can hear my voice, when I go to record though all it shows is a thin black line through the centre, and audio levels show activity but no play back !, please help and thankyou😃

I'm using a USB microphone . It was workn fine. I've encountered. Problems and fixed them before . tried those things. But my mic stopped picking up like 2 days ago. Any suggestions? Ive tried things like the playback engine , the I/O settings etc but maybe i just cant get it right or something idk but its upsetting to say the least lol

You're recording audio, with a microphone? Not MIDI on an instrument track, for example?

you may have the timeline tick stretched out so far that the recorded audio appears to be a "straight line". Shorten the scene and the usual audio waves may appear.

There's a shortcut to mute the click: it's hitting 7 on the numeric keypad. Have you tried hitting 7 and seeing if it comes back? Good luck! Let me know if that works

For some reason something has changed in protools. If I am listening to playback in wav form tracks pressing "3" will not engage for me to records. It WILL engage if I am in a midi track. If I start the start by pressing "3" in the wav track it engages but not anywhere else. Any thoughts? Much thanks.
What are the tracks' record enable statuses when you hit record?
So I set up everything, as you suggested. My interface is receiving signal from my mic, but it not communicating with pro tools. My playback engine and hardware are good to go as well. Help please? 🤷🏾♂️
Did you set the input panel for your track?
What about disk allocation?? protools won’t record... says disc full... definitely new to protools when it comes to this kind of stuff
My problem is whenever i get to 10:09 it doesnt show all of those options when i hover over interface is just says front left/ front right(stereo) what do I do about that?

I can get midi to play but can't get it to record.
Track is armed and record is pressed. It goes through the motions of recording but doesn't record anything.

Are you using an instrument track, or an audio track to record? You need to create an instrument track when recording MIDI. Sorry if that's obvious to you already, just figured I'd start at the beginning here for troubleshooting. (I do private Pro Tools lessons via Zoom btw, if you're ever interested.)

Question. Our session last night we made it through one song with relatively no issues. Then....we close and save that session and start a new session, setting up the same tracks for vox, guitar, drums. But every time we arm the track we start hearing double. We didnt change anything and this did not exist with the first session. WT actual F.
Then we find the check mark latency option which solves it. THEN, we we go to record, we arm all the tracks, hit the record button and the play, AND....the stop button flashes once and nothing records..................we restart protools several times, try creating several new sessions, nothing works. Now the only sessions that can record are the preset templates (which was a hail mary guess). We have to delete all the preloaded crap in there and make our tracks and it WORKS here but not in a new session. Any clue outside of going with another daw and writing a "Fuck You Pro Tools" song?

I selected my input and output, I see the green bar jumping up and down whenever I speak using my mic hooked to my scarlett. when I hit record enable on the track and then the record button at the top of the program window it flashes at me. pressing play or spacebar or 3 does not cause anything to happen except the record button reverts back to it's normal grey color. any fixes?

Go into setup, playback engine, change buffer size, then change it right back. It's a known bug in PT and that resets it without having to reboot
Hi Cato, it looks like it's recording, I get signal in volume in the meters, but I'm not getting a waveform and it's not playing it back, just a full colored track with no waveform. Win 10, latest update for Protools first. Thanks
Hey, that's a bummer, sorry it's being difficult! The thing that stands out to me here is this: have you checked that windows 10 is fully compatible with the most recent version of pro tools first?
hey just wanted to ask if you knew how to record and enable various tracks? for some reason its not letting me record more than one tracks at a time :/ overall great video!
you should be able to just click on that record enable button for as many tracks as you want to record onto. Once the record enable button is flashing, the track should record when you hit record for the session, and you can do that to multiple tracks at once. Is it giving you some kind of error when you press the record enable button for a second track?
Cato Zane , its not giving an error, for some reason when i click the second track i want to be recording at the same time with the first one, the first one stops flashing and just switches over to that one
@@jessemarquez7575 hrm, and you're not holding any modifier keys when you click the record enable buttons? What version of PT are you running? Is it fully compatible with your OS version?
I’m having a similar problem too ..
it allows me to record my first audio track but then when I select a new track to add a double it doesn’t record anything , for some reason there is no signal going into that track

So we've been trying to play my I Pro Tools forever. I've had to configure my microphone, which still needs to be done. Need to remember how to record WITH the track, ect playback was acting wonky too. How do I connect I Pro to Bluetooth speaker?
You know, I'm not sure 100% on how to connect a bluetooth speaker. I think, on the rare occasion that it is done, it's usually done by using an adapter that transmits the bluetooth, and that's plugged into your outputs on your interface, or on your monitoring switcher system. But I'm not 100% on that. Bluetooth speakers usually aren't ideal for working with Pro Tools, so when it is done, it's usually as one of many monitoring systems.
@@CatoNoise Ok. And what would you say to aUDIO not playing back with or without a microphone?
@@lloydbradly307 I'd have to see what you have going on I think. I'd check that your playback engine is set properly, output paths are set properly, that the faders on the tracks are up, you haven't muted anything, you have actual audio content to play back, and that your system volume is up. All of that depends on your setup a bit.
If pro tools wont let you click the record button.. reset all your busses to default then restart pro tools and make sure your audio interface is selected. Hope this helps someone!

So to see the volume automation graph again (is that what you're hoping for?) you can just click where it says "waveform" near the head of the track in the edit window and choose volume. Or you can click the little icon towards the very bottom left of the head of the track in the edit window, and choose volume from the automation lane sub track that pops up. Let me know if that was the fix you were looking for. Thanks!

( sliders ) , but , by mistake, i clicked on the X at the top on this window, and it desapeared. I don t know what to do to bring it back on my screen. I searched everywhere. I can t figure it out. Hi thanks for vid my I/o changed by it self it doesn't show 1-2 in my tracks just 1 mono and i cant hear anything when I click record ⏺️ even the other tracks that didn't get affected that have the 1-2 set up correctly still can't hear mic idk what to do please help
What does it say for your playback device when you go to setup>playback engine? It should list your interface there
@@CatoNoise I bought the basic set up where it's the avid prot tools bundle with just the mic there's no box thingy with it just mic I went to a computer repair place they said to either reinstall hardware or get a new mic I reinstalled protocols and it's the same thing should I just get a new mic? I'm about to check playback engine right now to tell you what I see but they playback part is working just fine I just can't hear anything when I click record

I have been trying to figure out for a month why when I switched to another vocal to record I couldn't hear anything and I had forgot to switch the input. It took me watching 30 seconds of this video to figure out such a simple mistake LOL
I purchase the latest edition of pro tools and when I go to set up my interface Hardware is not an option in the setup menu Dropbox... How do i fix that???

@@obhpopular ok I think I got now: stereo for input means more than 1 mic but it could be your default option. Select. Next, under i/o follow same guidelines(interface may be a default). Hope I helped..

@@obhpopular 1)perhaps you need a driver downloaded from asio4all.org. Downloaded this successfully(research how to). You should now see it in your setup drop box. However, I believe everything should remain at default and no changes required. 2) select hardware and in the hardware box, select only what you specifically need the driver to use. Do this by placing an arrow on the left of any item you wish to use by the driver.. for example I only selected my pc audio default and my USB condensed mic because it's what I'm using to record. Let me know if you any more questions..Ran into the same issue 😕

I have the same problem man, did you manage to get sound ? So frustrating, I can hear my mic through headphones and then when I record it just has a thin black line through the centre, shows mixer activity but no playback sound! Arghhh

18;30 why is the waveforms so big even tho ur hitting about 10 db?
it's probably just my audio zoom setting, which only affects how big the waveforms look visually, and doesn't affect the audio levels at all. If you look towards the top left region of your edit window, it's in the zoom tools section, and it's the button with the waveform icon on it. You can click the top half of it to make your waveforms display larger, or the bottom part of it to make the waveforms display smaller. Anyway, hope that helps! Let me know if that's what you were talking about?

Which interface do you have? Did you make sure you have any of the required drivers installed in order to use it?

@@LJ-ie8wj hi! I use pro tools because I do this professionally, and through that work, I've moved around between a number of commercial studios. Every studio I've worked in runs off pro tools. That's the simple answer. Logic has its advantages, but I also don't stick with the genre of work that it really tends to be good for - I do a range of stuff. So, Logic is great for a lot of people, it just didn't make as much sense for me with my work and career path.

I’m having pops on my studio speakers and headphones but not just on my sessions while trying to record, (I can’t even record) because it pauses by itself, I think because of the cracking sounds, but even when i’m not on pro tools, when i’m just playing anything on my laptop a beat,song etc it pops! Btw I’m using a new interface i just brought today (Presonus audiobox 96) i had an issue with latency and the phantom button on my old interface (Presonus audiobox usb) but never had this type of problem that i have now with the new one! My settings are all the same as before, I’ve tried changing settings and everything but it keeps making those weird sound when i play anything! This doesn’t happen with my old interface just with the new one, I don’t know what to do because I don’t think it’s the interface, maybe settings or something on my laptop but I already tried changing everything, buffer size, etc… and nothing! And when I’m trying to record after 5sec the audio is gone!! I even got this message on pro tools session. “Audio processing could not complete due to conflicts with other CPU tasks or a potential clocking issue. If this occurs often, verify your sync cables or try changing the HW Buffer Size setting in the Playback Engine dialog. In most cases, a larger HW buffer size will prevent the problem. (AAE -9093)
Did you check that your interface driver that you installed is fully compatible with both your OS version and your Pro Tools version?
@@CatoNoise yes i did! And nothing! I just got back from getting a new interface (scarlett solo 3gen) let’s see if this works!
@@wokepusha7706 cool, let me know how it goes. I'd also check your cable connection between the computer and the interface. Is it an old cable that might need replacing? Do you need to dust-off the connections and re seat them? That kind of thing, just to be sure.
@@CatoNoise I will.!! And i don’t think it was the cable because i used both the old and the new cable with my old interface and that didn’t happen just with the new interface.
Why did the sound cut out? The signal bars are moving so why don't any of the videos address my....ooops....the track was muted....never mind!
If your not gettin signal from your mic make sure the 48v button is on. It took me a week to figure that out😂
Ah, yes! That's a good one. It only applies if it's a condenser mic, or if you're using something like a cloud lifter that needs phantom power between the mic and the preamp. If you send phantom power (via that 48v button) to a ribbon mic, it can ruin it! So, be careful.

lol, seriously! I teach at a college though, and I see that problem all the time with beginners (sometimes even with people that supposedly already went to short term audio schools and then transferred to the college where I teach) - so you'd probably be surprised at how often it comes up! lol

I dont understand why I cant record. I have seen so many videos and I have all the settings, it is definitely picking up my mic as I see the green bar when I hit record enable. Everything is enabled properly, time-line is moving during record, signal from instrument is bouncing up/down from guitar (and vocal) but it simply will not write the audio to the track. Sound is coming through the monitors and it creates a boxed clip, but it remains blank.. I've already pulled out 10 years worth of hair trying to figure this one out
I am baffled... for some reason I press 3 or F12 or Ctrl+Space Bar and nothing, protools won't start recording... Meaning nothing happens at all.

So I restarted ProTools and now it records. Weird.
Phew, I'm glad the restart worked! Sometimes weird stuff like that happens and it's just a mystery, I suppose.
Did not solve my issue
Kind of a misleading title. You went on forever about plugging in a mic or instrument. We got that but sometimes when you hit record then play the record light will go out. You then began talking about giving the performer water …wtf is happening here.
exact same problem here. audio track recording is enabled, input and output selected properly, protools is reading the input but when I hit record and then play the flashing record button goes back to being grey, nothing happens.

awww, no need to lash out! You could just tell me you don't know how to do that and ask nicely for a video on it. If you had known even a tiny bit about the topic, then you'd know it's not done within Pro Tools, and it depends on the hardware you're using...so that's part of why I left that out of this specific video. Plus, from my experience teaching college students for years: if Pro Tools isn't recording, it's usually the solutions I mentioned here (you know, the blabbing), and not the gain knob that's the problem. So, it arguably doesn't really match the topic for this video. But go ahead, show your ignorance while whining that someone's free youtube video covers a topic that's slightly different than the one you're searching for, lmao.
