Drummer reacts to "Lucky Seven" by Chris Squire

  • Chris brings such a different lyrical approach compared to Jon. And I love it! It is so personal and...dirty at some points. The bass tone he gets is just superb but it is even BETTER on this track. Patrick Moraz holding it down... Bill killing it... what else could you ask for?

Clearly my favorite from this album, and probably from all yes members' solo albums. Everyone is at its top : Mel Collins' solo is magnificent, Patrick Moraz settles the tempo in a perfect way, and Chris and Bill shine through the whole song.
I have a special fondness, for Bill's drumming at the very end, I love the dialogue between the bass drum and the snare.

My favorite song on this album as well. The Sax and the Bass sound so great together, and Chris's voice just sounds superb with the music. Let us not forget Bill. I have watched interviews with Chris and he describes the way he picks the strings on his bass. When he plays he hits the note with his pick but also hits the string with his thumb which brings depth to the sound of the notes and gives him his unique sound when he plays which I found to be both interesting and amazing. Just an interesting fact that I found out. I wish I could remember the interview that he mentioned that I found on RUclips for all of you to check out. Nice to see you back Lee. 👏👏

@@L33Reacts Chris's story of how he happened to meet Jimi Hendrix (without yet having any idea of who he was, although Hey Joe had already become a hit) at the Marquee Club in early 1967, when the Syn had been booked to the same bill as Jimi and the Experience, is pure gold. There are so many comic points here, and Chris' laid-back way of telling it, with an understated sense of comic timing, nails all of them. ruclips.net/video/eo-lBnTc3So/видео.html

I had this on 8-track tape when it first came out. Hope you work your way through the whole thing -- the remaining two tracks are essential. I always loved Chris' distinctive voice on the Yes albums, and so this solo effort has always allowed me to bask in it. Patrick Moraz' solo album at the time, "The Story of i", is a total trip. Steve Howe's "Beginnings" is a personal fave as well -- I've even developed a fondness for his less-than-stellar yet earnest vocals. Alan White's "Ramshackled", on the other hand, is best left alone.

Lee, have you heard the live version of "the Fish" from the Yessongs album? It's a true showcase for Bill and Chris, taped in New York in early 1972, and with such bursts of poetic light and kinetic energy...A real exploration of the possibilities of the Rickenbacker (and of their new live sound system which was custom built for them and meant a tiger leap for their on-stage sound I got hold of Chris Welch's book about the band which delves into so much about the development of Yes and their music). In the Live Fish you can really hear the influence of Jimi Hendrix on Squire, and how much it inspired his playing.

Chris was Yes from the start, which would be when he met and sat down with Jon at the place the latter worked as a server. He took to putting together a group because he kept getting criticism as a session musician. That's why the bass was always forward in Yes music. From that meeting to his death, he was always a part of Yes. Hence the Yes energy

Fender Rhodes isn't something commonly heard in context of Yes-related music. That is until Patrick came along, bless him. So in some ways this song is an extension of the jazzy experiments on Relayer. It's just very NOT Yes-y in that it's the same keyboard riff just repeated over and over -- with everything else layered on it turning it into a big jam. It's a cool song. I remember back in high school when a friend got this album before I did. He called me all excited going on about how "It's jazz!" 😄

Chris's Telecaster bass; the only time he used it on record, AFAIK, but he lost it (or it was stolen). His then wife Nikki on BVs too. The meter is 7/4 (apart from the end of the chorus "toooo-niiiiight"), and, if comparisons are even necessary, all you need to do is add a strong guitar line and this could be a Pink Floyd track.
