- Lecture - Joseph Shulam “Simply Paul: Who is He and Who are His Opponents?” (Joseph Shulam is a Hebrew scholar and Christian minister in Jerusalem)

Even in the first century the disciples of Yeshua (Jesus) had difficulty understanding Paul and his writings for several reasons. One reason Joseph Shulam proposes is that Paul was a lawyer and wrote like a lawyer. Also, Paul was a very religious Jew by his own confession and the audience to whom his letters were written had very little understanding of the Jewish world and Hebrew Bible. Further, Paul held to the Jewish/Pharisaic worldview of God’s program for history (past, present and future). Even the Jews had a hard time understanding Paul and his theological ideas because they were in a struggle for survival and did not see the bigger picture and solution to their problems. Shulam proposes that we allow Paul’s own words to describe himself and his background in order to define his identity and his theology in the best way and to identify his opponents most accurately. By getting Paul’s clear view of himself we can better understand his battles both inside and outside the church. This lecture will give you fresh insight into some of Paul’s most difficult passages.

Joseph Shulam was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1946 and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1948 just before the establishment of the State. He grew up in Jerusalem where he was introduced to the New Testament in high school. Joseph immediately identified with Yeshua, which eventually led him to faith in the Messiah. As a result, he was rejected by his family and traveled to the United States to finish high school in Georgia. He returned to Jerusalem and studied Biblical Archaeology and Bible at Hebrew University. He returned to the U.S to study New Testament and Chemistry at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he met his wife Marcia. They have two children and two grandchildren.
In 1969 they started a congregation in Tel-Aviv. In 1972 Joseph began 3 years of rabbinical college studies, followed by more graduate study at Hebrew University. In 1981 he established the Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry and in 1982 purchased a building on Narkis Street, the first for a Messianic Jewish congregation in Jerusalem. This building was renovated and expanded with support from around the world. It was dedicated in March 2015.
Joseph has lectured extensively around the world and has encouraged disciples in most European countries, as well as Finland, Bulgaria, Russia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Japan, Korea, Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, of course.
Joseph has written and partnered in writing several books, including commentaries on Romans, Acts and Galatians. He also authored "Hidden Treasures: The First Century Jewish Way of Understanding the Scriptures"; "Planted in the House of the Lord" "God, Israel, and the Church"; "Starting a Messianic Jewish Yeshiva" and "Speak Tenderly to Jerusalem".
One of the most interesting and enlightening lectures about Paul's writings and style that I've seen.
Yes I think it is clear from scripture that Paul continued to be an observant Jew. Many depict Paul as an antinomian (one against law) But Paul was far from that. Remember Torah/Law was God's instruction. Paul says the Law is holy. the problem was not God's instruction but our rebellion. Jesus was God's law personified. Word made flesh and dwelt among us. to despise and hate him was to despise and hate the Father's will revealed in Torah. Remember the depiction of the enemy is the man of lawlessness. Sometimes Christianity fits that description with the anti law teachings. they need to see Paul's teaching more clearly and turn from their understanding to his.

He is incorrect in his exegesis about the verse in Acts where Paul says I have done nothing against the law. By other verses we know that Paul knew himself to be at liberty and released from the law. So then what did he mean? He meant that in the truest sense he didn't do anything against the law but spoke and preached its perfect completiion and fulfilment in Christ crucified and lived according to that truth. Many of the apostles contemporary fellow Jews disagreed and we know most of Paul's letters were written because of that controversy between those who considered him lawless and his understanding of the righteousness od the law being fulfilled through Christ. That is why he says in Corinthians I became all things to all men.
1Co 9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law
And also he says
Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God WITHOUT the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.
By saying without the law he is speaking of another way of righteousness opened up apart from the institution of Moses and by saying it is witnessed to by the law and prophets he is saying it is in agreement,fulfilment and confirmation. So that although aprt form the law and different it is not contrary.
While I respect this man for his age and faith in Christ he seems he is a Judaizer and off in his teaching.
The verse he uses in Philippians 3:3
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
This is speaking of both Jew and Gentiles who are circumcised without hands.
He actually twists this to its opposite.
He says that when Paul boasts unwillingly in his flesh he is speaking to Gentiles. That is actually absurd. Paul is in reality speaking to and against other Jews who boasted in their flesh.
He is contrasting spiritual circumcision with physical circumcision in the above verse.
He really twists this badly.

Very interesting. I had never thought of the difference of Jews being saved 'out of' faith and Gentiles being saved 'through' faith. Great insight. We often overlook the little prepositions, like 'ek' and 'dia', but they have a lot of weight when translating. (The host is one of the best interviewers I have ever seen. He listened and reasoned and asked targeted questions - questions that were already pointed, but he sharpened the point even more. Really impressive. The interviewer wasn't afraid or intimidated by Joseph Shulam and didn't hesitate to press him to defend his positions. I was as impressed by the host as much as I was by the speaker. That doesn't happen very often.)

It is best to be a gentile Christian than trying to go to the Messianic Synagogues and trying adapt meaning wearing a kipa, thallit trying to perform all the feast. These are commands for Israelites. Paul was so right. Thank you

A lot can be gained by going to Messianic Synagogues. you learn the roots of Christianity in a Hebrew context. it makes many words of Scripture come alive. I never wear a kipa, or thallit. the kipa is saying you adhere to all the 613 commandments. I never felt compelled to keep all the feasts but enjoyed many Pesach (Passover) and a few feast of weeks (Pentecost) and learned a great deal. It all depends on how secure you are in Christ. you do not have to subscribe to everything but it can be a great way to learn more. I particularly like their celebrative Sabbath observance. Jesus is the Rest of God made in human flesh but the book Hebrews points to two things that illustrate the rest of God. entering the promise land with Joshua which David later says many still have not entered in his day and the 7th Day. it is the only commandment of the ten that God said to remember and it seems like many forgot.
@@fleetwd1 I was one of those trying to be super Jew to an extent. I’ve studied Modern and Classical Hebrew and have Rabbah Midrash and all the ArtScroll commentaries, Gematria, Word Play. I so got up in the Rabbinic literature and the reading of the Parashult I took my eyes off the Salvation of Grace not by works. So I guess as a gentile I should try to follow the feast and keep the Sabbath? The one thing that confuses me is Colossians 2:14, 16, 17. Hebrews 4 the Sabbath is for Yeshua. Thank you
@@SkiBroTheHeBro Yes I understand Hebrews is showing the rest of God is found in Jesus. Grace is not contrary to the Law except when Law becomes a method rather than a standard. Jesus is the Truth of all things. Sabbath included. I think Resting in the finished work of God was the meaning behind Sabbath from Creation on. Grace is taught throughout the Torah and Paul's arguments for Grace are Torah based.
I have encountered an extreme element in Messianic Congregations where Gentile participants show a desire to adhere to the Law. the only way to do it entirely is by being content in Christ. Faith establishes the law rather than destroying the Law because in Jesus the promise of God to Abraham comes to completeness not by destroying the Law but by Messiah fulfilling it. Once understood our hearts will be circumcised and we will love it as we love Christ himself since he is a demonstration of what the Law/God's Word/Torah being fulfilled is in human flesh is like in reality. there is nothing wrong with the Law there is something wrong with the human heart that wishes to fulfill the Law to be accepted on our own. "Being ignorant of God's righteousness they sought to establish their own." The Law is a "Standard" not a "Method". Messiah fully measures up to it we do not but by seeing Messiah's demonstration of what a life of fulfillment looks like we should appreciate the Law not through legalism but through grace. Faith in Christ brings a legal standing to those who believe and there is no distinction between Jew or Gentile. we are all Justified by the work of YHWH He promised Abraham He would accomplish for His Name's sake.

A really enlightening talk.
For some years now I have been trying to understand the scriptures by looking at them (as far as is possible) through Jewish eyes.
This talk contributed greatly to that process and confirmed the misgivings I have regarding some of the various Hebrew roots movements, well intentioned though they may be.
I am a wild branch grafted in, I accept that.
But, as the last question/answer confirms I am (in Yeshua) as one with you, my Jewish brothers and sisters.
yes all of those who have no Hebrew bloodline roots are wild branches grafted in. the blessings come through the root of Abrahams seed. Jesus, Yeshua, rightly said apart from me (the root) you can do nothing. He was YHWH's work of salvation represented in many types and shadows in Hebrew Scripture but became the final Word made human flesh. He brings it all together and completes the Jewish expectation including all those of the nations blessed through Abraham..

@@getitinontheroad You don’t understand what Jesus was saying in Matthew. You can still have teachers and preachers, BUUUUT they have to be fully submitted to God and acting as under-shepherds. I haven't read any thing this man has said yet . I only read some of the comments so far. I feel that I am being led to listen to what he says by the Holy Spirit. But I think I am going to be blessed as well as finding that I am about to reap more than I could have guessed...I will comment further about this and I feel that this is a great man for the times that we are in.....

2 Peter 1:20-21 "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of men but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." I respectfully disagree with Mr. Shulam in stating Paul had limited knowledge as he penned the inspired Word of Elohim. The "knowledge that was given him" was inspired and therefore infallible, no less authoritative than the gospels. He yielded himself fully to the Holy Spirit and wrote under inspiration. Peter praised Paul for that reason.
I think the reference to Paul's knowledge is to set the tone about the fact his writings are difficult to understand, as they really are. If we accept Paul wrote under inspiration, we also must accept nothing he wrote can overturn anything Yahshúa said, teached an did. Because: ignorant and unstable people distort (Paul´s writings), as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction
I don't think we ought to confuse the 'scriptures' that Peter is talking about, with letters that were written to congregations.
The scriptures (or prophecies) were written by the established prophets of God that lived in Old Testament times. Those are the scriptures that the New Testament always refers to.
Paul's not arguing and boasting that he is a better jew. He is basically saying I'm a jew like you . In the flesh. But not there is a new program out . It's not about being a jew. Jews rejected Jesus as messiah

Shalom Aleichem, I have enjoyed Joseph's teaching and it may confused people when he talks about the Lamb (Jehoshua) who was prepared from the beginning when you read the story of Abraham in the ommitted books it said that before he sacrificed Isaac he was stopped by the Angel and was showed the Lamb which was held by thicket and it was said this Lamb was prepared before the creation for that purpose and it's a representation of Yehoshua the messiah.Amen but I have enjoyed and now I understand Paul alittle so stay blessed and shalom to you all.
And even before this he had to sacrifice an animal (most likely a lamb) in the garden after Adam and Eve sinned; he clothed them with it.
Why it not mention meshiah in this.. Why it not mention jesus by name. Every verse you bring never mentions messhia or jesus if it did it would be game over but its what you read into it. Why God have to kill an innocent person for forgiveness moreover was messiah God?

Paul's faith was that of Shem, Noah, Abraham, David, Solomon, the prophets , John and Jesus .
The temporary covenant given to Israel at Mt. Sinai was finished at the cross. Upon resurrected, the Lord enacted his new covenant and mediated it himself as promised in the Hebrew scriptures.
The fact that he broke himself into pieces ( as in the covenant he made with Abraham) is an everlasting sacrifice, once and for all people, as promised.

I have always wondered why fellow Christians have not comprehended Pauls writings as authoritative and with power? He saw into Heaven and was commanded not to write or divulge it to others for a time? And HE comes out with the greatest and most elegant writings to sooth fellow believers and give them greater hope and faith in Christ

@@pattyclifton7905 well that is not a Christian idea or sentiment but deviant and anti Christ. He who does not receive Paul does not have or receive Christ or the Father who sent him.
I agree. The very texts Rabbi Shulam is using are texts in which Paul is teaching the *opposite* of what is being put forward here.
In context, "those who boast in the flesh" are identical with, "those who mar the flesh." Paul understands himself to be A) a true Jew as opposed to the general Jewish legalists and also B) an apostle of Christ, and he is speaking primarily to C) Gentile Christians. In that context, who fits the idea of "those" who mar the flesh and rely on bodily obsevances? Gentile Pagans (of which Paul says little), Gentile Christians, Jewish Christians, or Pharisaical Jews? Is the answer not obvious? The Jews were well-known around the entire Mediterranean World and beyond by the distinctive practice of circumcision. Then Paul, speaking to Gentile Christians says that "we" are the "true circumcision," "not made by hands." Clearly Paul puts himself and other messianic Christ-followers along with Gentile Christians in one group and the *other* Jews in a different group who opposes them. This is the sense all the way through Paul's letters.
To make the point, when Paul writes about what it would look like for him to rely on the flesh, he puts forward his fleshly qualifications *as a Jew* ! He is saying, as a Pharisee of Pharisees, he could be be one of those who rely on the flesh even more than anyone, but we are not supposed to do that! Therefore, those who he is describing as those who rely on matters of the flesh are the Pharisaical Jews.
The Rabbi here can only say, essentially, "but Jews are insecure, so Paul must not be talking about them." How silly. Often the most insecure are exactly those most concerned with external matters.
Was not so much of Jesus' discussion with the Jewish leaders about trying to get them to see beyond the fleshly, physical, requirements of the law and the rules they had added to it? Look at His talk with the member of the Council named Nicodemus. The whole talk revolves around Christ trying to get the man to look beyond the fleshly, physical nature of what He was saying. When Christ said, "You must be born again," Nicodemas asked, "Can an old man enter into his mother's womb a second time to be born?" And Jesus explained to Him that he needed to be able to understand the spiritual meaning of what He was teaching, not just its external sense.
Again, so much of what was revolutionary Christ's teaching, and thus what went so much against the understanding of the Jewish leaders, were teachings that flipped the Law on its head to introduce the spiritual requirement that went beyond the fleshly. All of the "You have heard...but I say to you," statements were of this kind. The bulk of Jesus' public ministry came down to an attempt to shake the Jews' fleshly understanding of God's law and turn it on its head in order to raise their perspective to properly understand the Kingdom that was coming into the world.

The discussion here is over *what* Paul is saying, not whether he is right or not. You have to figure out the one before you can decide the other.
Only the Word of Elohim aka the Law & the Prophets is scripture. The NT is not scripture and any teaching thereof must be validated by the Word.

Hebrews 8:7-9 vs. *Jeremiah 31:32*
Most ignorant christians would argue that Paul was using the Septuagint while quoting passages from the Old Testament, thus the authors of the Septuagint are to blame for including mistakes in it, not Paul. Thus, Christians think that they have vindicated Paul.
This response is foolish. First of all, Paul knew how to speak Hebrew. So why didn't he just go to the Hebrew Old Testament writings instead of appealing to fallible translations? Secondly, God supposedly inspired Paul so why didn't God 'inspire' him to avoid these mistakes? One could conclude that Paul either purposely mistranslated the original hebrew text (most likely) or he was an ignoramus who was trying to pose as learned man.

That line in the beginning that "either they are lying or Paul is lying" isn't the only option. Paul clearly states later in the epistles, for example, that the mature don't need to worry about the Sabbath, nor the holidays (namely Passover), nor what to eat etc because those things were shadows of Yeshua. So what he means when he says he hasn't offended against the Law has to be understood in that context. For him, keeping the Law meant living in the reality of Yeshua (who is the Truth) by the Spirit. Thus, the Law is fulfilled.

I mostly liked what he said about the dietary laws. If God has given a law how them do we ask God to bless the same things He has told us not to eat. The veil with the unclean animals makes more sense. It was not about food but about fellow men. It is not as if we have to eat those things that God has declared unclean. If they are unclean to the Jews they are unclean to us too. His statement about the Holy Spirit leading us to understand these things makes more sense than capitulating to our desire to eat unclean foods. If he believes the Bible teaches us not to do it then he should have maintained his stance. May the Lord lead us we seek to overcome our appetites and the stubbornness of our hearts.
i think the reason for unclean verses clean is unclean are not as healthy for you. I remember in public High School class the teacher saying while pork is less expensive it also is not the best quality nutrition. They had no religious bias involved just common sense. Also think how many people get sick from eating shellfish. there are even warnings in certain areas not to eat any from that location. the unclean are mainly scavengers.
Recently seeing how important it factors into archeology determining which locations were Israel settlements and which were their neighbors based on bones of what was eaten could also be a factor in God's instruction. But Scripture tells us not to be judgmental over dietary issues.

First realize the ONLY way to be saved, now, in the Church age (Age of Grace) is:

(We can’t continue in all things of the law (10 commandments), because we have already BROKEN the law and are condemned by the law (trying to live a good life and obey the bible’s commandments to earn salvation is impossible). People trying to be saved by law-keeping will, very sadly, be un-saved for eternity. They are judged by the Ten Commandments and found GUILTY.
Psalm 14:3, “They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, NOT ONE”
Romans 3:23 “For ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God”

The biggest problem that I have with Rabbi Shulam is that he disregards a basic law of the law of Moses when he includes Paul's writings in the New Testament as if they were Scripture. Jesus did not follow any of the words written in the New Testament he had no knowledge of them as they were not written until after his death. He believed in the law of Moses as validated by the prophets and the forgiveness of others, not that God had grace for active sinners.
One of those very basic laws is that the truth is never established through rumor or the uncorroborated testimony either of an eyewitness or a non-eyewitness. Paul is simply not an eyewitness to any of Jesus's life or ministry. Therefore everything he says is rumor and inadmissible in a Jewish court of law. James his brother, Matthew the tax collector, and Peter the fisherman through the hand of Mark all testify as eyewitnesses of Jesus's teaching and ministry and they all corroborate each other.
While John appears to be an eyewitness his testimony is not corroborated by other eyewitnesses and in places contradicts them and under Jewish law that makes his testimony nothing more than rumor as well. You need to ask yourself are you going to base your salvation on nothing but rumor spread by someone that you know never met Jesus in the flesh or are you going to base what happens to your soul after your body dies on corroborated eyewitness accounts the only man in documented history to be publicly executed and be seen days later by numerous people.

Jesus was clearly a Torah observant Jew who did not follow the traditions of the elders and he taught others to do the same. Just as Karaite Jews of today he taught that the only reason to ever deviate from the instructions given to Moses was that two or more prophets said the scribes had changed the instructions. He restated a common theme of the prophets was that God desires mercy not sacrifice. You show mercy when you forgive the sins of those you think have sinned against you.

Yeshua was a Torah observant Jew who followed the prophets not the traditions of the elders. Yeshua did not have any of the books of the New Testament to verify or validate all we can do is use the principles he would've used in determining what is the truth of those books. If we believe Moshe about how to find the truth, as Yeshua did, we discover he has a very simple rule. In order to determine the truth, you must have two or more eyewitnesses whose testimony corroborates each other. In the New Testament, we have five possible eyewitnesses to Yeshua's teaching and/or ministry, but only four of those corroborate the other three.
There is no biblical scholar that I'm aware of today that believes Peter wrote either of the books that bear his name, but most believe he used Mark's hand to write his account of Yeshua's ministry. I also do not believe that first or second Peter were written by Peter. I have come to believe that first Peter was most likely written by Paul as a late response to James's letter and second Peter by somebody, possibly Paul, who wanted to replace Jude's letter.
From what I can determine James, the brother of Yeshua, is most likely the first document God had written in what we call the New Testament. Most Bible scholars believe Galatians is the first letter of Paul's, it looks like a direct response to James's letter. Bible scholars tell us that first and second Corinthians and first and second Thessalonians were the next books written by Paul. Then comes the Gospels of Matthew the tax collector and of Peter through the hand of Mark. This is followed by various writings of Paul and either his friends or others like him. Luke writes two works admitting he has no firsthand knowledge of anything to do with Yeshua or if you read closely even any of the disciples, but he does have firsthand knowledge of the teachings of Paul. He writes Acts of the Apostles to give Paul credibility and in the Gospel of Luke, he adds to Mark and Matthew things that are important to the theology of Paul, but were never taught by Yeshua.
Jude another one of Yeshua's brother's writes to warn people of the false teachings in his brother's name. Second Peter looks like it is designed to fool people into thinking it is Jude's letter but that it comes from Peter and therefore would be the "gospel truth." Finally, after everyone else is dead John writes five books including the revelation. Growing up a Torah observant Jew and walking with Yeshua for three years John knew that in order for his works to be accepted by the Jewish community he would have to corroborate the testimony of Matthew and Peter through Mark but he does not.
I believe that God used Paul and John for his purposes even if he did not speak through them, just as he uses Job's friends to bring us important messages about what he is not. I recognize without the teachings of Paul and John the teachings of Yeshua would have been lost in the second or third century at the latest. Paul and John are the primary teachers in any Christian denomination and without their teachings, the teachings of James, Matthew, Mark, and Jude would have been lost to history as would my access to the Torah which is what Yeshua believed in.

When we married Jesus by being water baptised in his name Jesus, we joined into the tribe of Judah and are grafted into new covenant Israel, we are the true Jews of this time, the door through old covenant Judaism ended with the death of Jesus, now only the new covenant, Jeremiah 31:31-34 talks about that is only for Judah, because all must enter into the tribe of Judah to be new covenant Israel. Acts 2:38.
God said he would make a new covenant with both Israel and Judah. Even Paul said "hath God cast away His own people? God forbid". You are not the only branch.
The first fruits are holy, don't boast yourself against the branches because if God cut them off because of unbelief, God is able to graft them in again. The very chapter he was reading from still says explicitly that you are a wild branch grafted in if you continue in His goodness, because He will also cut you off.
You were grafted into Israel, you didn't replace the branches because the branches are still holy. Be not highminded.
I like this guy's teaching, but I disagree with his views that physical circumcision is only for the Jews.

Paul never said he was a christian but a prisoner of Christ. He has done nothing wrong but the program changed to a mystery program
Peter isn’t saying Paul’s wisdom is limited. The fact that unlearned people had a hard time with Paul is because Paul spoke far more wisdom than the others. It is shown through the amount of writings he contributed. In word. But the other 12 apostles were the ones who were called to hold up the burden of the church. It’s one thing to contribute in words of wisdom, but it’s another thing to be bearers of the responsibility of all the peoples of the world. That’s the difference between Paul and Peter. Paul understood scripture much deeper than even Peter, to rebuke Peter in his walk as a believer that it was not aligned to the truth.
There is a crossover between the 12 apostles and the apostle Paul the apostles were still following the Jewish law to a point but they also understood that Jesus was the true Messiah that was their mission to teach the Jews that they had killed their Messiah that they needed to repent and they would go into the kingdom of heaven the apostle Paul who was personally taught by Jesus himself was to teach the gentiles but they were not to get all caught up into Jewish law the law was dead at that point when Jesus died all those 613 laws died there was not to be continuing in a temple they did not need to do animal sacrifices anymore Jesus said it when he was on the cross it's finished he was the final sacrifice they just didn't recognize it there's even a quote when Peter and it might be in 2nd Peter where Peter finally has to defend Paul when they are accusing him of of not teaching Jewish law to the gentiles Peter is reminded by the Lord that 12 years earlier that the Lord have him go to the house of Cornelius they were all saved they ate not kosher and the holy Spirit came upon all of them that was a teaching moment for Peter but he did not know it until this confrontation with Paul and he ends up that Paul is right that the gentiles are not to be mixed in with Jewish rituals that that was over with so I'm a little confused when the speaker says that Paul was still doing kosher food and all that confuses me but the point is you have to separate the 12 apostles teaching because Paul has a new message the message of the age of Grace and in the age of Grace we do not have to follow all these rules that the Jews did Jesus was trying to get that through to the Jewish people that he was a sacrifice that they did not need Temple worship anymore but they didn't believe that and they didn't understand it so that was an opportunity for the Lord to come to the gentiles otherwise we would have been totally lost also so we can praise God he chose to be sacrificed on that cross and resurrected from the dead otherwise I eternity would be and hell forever

I do agree with your sentiment that the Jew should be responsible for the conversion of fellow Jews to bring the understanding of the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and his sacrifice for our sins. The Messianic Jews who are very involved in this work are in the organization One For Israel. I invite your listeners to google the organization and pray for their outreach ministry.
Great info, but it’s pretty preposterous to say that Paul was not a Christian, or literally defined, “Christ one”. Paul penned Christianity. Also termed “those of the way”, Christians learned everything they know about “The Way” from Paul. Yes he was a Jew, but that was not his way post Christ-appearing to him. But if only things were as simple as Shulman puts it with the we/you = Jews/Gentiles dichotomy (it's helpful to be aware that sometimes this is the case, but other times its clear Paul is saying we as in 'you and I together' and Paul switches even within the same book/chapter) and the by/through dichotomy (e.g. if it's this simplistic, then Romans 5:1 is about Jews). It's useful but not as clear cut as Shulman makes it seem. That's my general comment on Shulman's whole thesis, is that I don't think Paul uniformly has the same opponents or that he is uniformly addressing the same issue at all times. It seems to be a simplistic solution that obscures some things as much as it clarifies others. A helpful perspective, but only a perspective nonetheless and not an absolute hermeneutical eye-opener (at least, not for me). Nonetheless I certainly would agree with the general vibe on this video/comments that Gentile believers are grafted into Israel, and not some generic Christian space or a replacement of some sort.
thank you for sharing your thoughts. I will have to remember to keep it in mind when i get a chance to revisit the lecture. I do not remember this issue in relation to Paul's writings but it has been a while ago since I listened to it. perhaps if you gave me a time stamp to help me find it. My memory goes back to Luke writing in Acts and "they" was when Luke was not with them and "we" was when he was with them. However, like I say, it has been years since i heard this fully. You may have caught something worth consideration.

Joseph Shulam as a gentile this lesson has been a blessing for me and i thankyou for it. I feel i have had to come back to the basics of understanding God through the Bible and understanding many things of scripture wording and meanings.
Does the Jew and convert to jew also refer to " They who say they are Jews but are not"? I have heard a couple of theories regarding, one is spiritual replacement theology aka God done away with the Jew and replaced gentiles as spiritual Jews, Which i am totally against that teaching. The other being Jew means Judah, those who say they are Jews (Judah) are not. It makes more sence it would mean those who say they are Jews (gentile Converts, circumcised in flesh etc) or is there another meaning.
I tried to write the lesson you gave out but it was to difficult with phone data stopping and starting, is their a hand out or PDF on this lesson as i would like to learn it better. Thankyou.

Paul did convert because he believed in Christ Jesus as the Son of God.
True he did not convert he became a completed Jew..
The only thing I disagree with is "salvation it is a process" because Grace is upon us by faith in Jesus Christ period!
Let us be clear. while sanctification is "a process" of a lifetime, justification is not. it is the finished work of Christ. Gary your concern is warranted. it is important to keep the two distinct from one another. blending the two ruins confidence and is biblically inaccurate. God's work for you is primary where as God's work in you is secondary and is a result from the first. the first is the root the second is the fruit. Jesus said, "you can do nothing unless you abide in me" we abide in Him by faith alone. we grow by faith which is active by love..in justification we have no part. in sanctification we have a cooperators part. we cooperate with the Spirit in sanctification but we are never accepted on the basis of sanctification.

...concerning the "we" and the "you", the line isn't really about Jews in contrast to the gentiles...but rather the mature in contrast to the young in faith. Paul was mainly interested in spiritual lines and only referred to ethnicity when resolving misunderstanding based on ethnicity.
Otherwise I am most grateful whenever I find a jew that believes in Jesus Christ. After which they're a brother in Christ.

Paul was never an "Christian" but was a follower of Yeshua Ha Mashiach. Christianity, was founded by a pagan Roman conqueror who never had a relationship with Yeshua ha mashiach. He was not a SABBATH KEEPER and I am referring to Emperor Constantine.of 321 A.D.

You said before Abraham there were no gentiles, however, surely since the beginning of time, mankind were all gentiles until God chose His people through Jacob?
My opinion they were all gentiles until the Lord shows Abraham for a separate race the Jewish race through whom He would come as their and ours Messiah!
Circumcision is still important. But the way to understand it is, Jews were circumcised in the flesh on the 8th day. But believers in the messiah all die in the flesh. That means the flesh has nothing to do with it but that once dead in the flesh you are raised to life in the spirit and circumcision is in the heart, in the spirit and not in the flesh. That means everyone that is now under the new Covenant whether Jew or gentile have been circumcised in the spirit. The flesh is dead. So it’s not that God put away the circumcision, but that it’s not in the flesh anymore but it is of the spirit.
I always said Paul was picked as the 12th apostle by CHRIST... Just as he picked the first 12... Although the remaining 11 apostles voted on their own to replace the betrayer...ultimately Christ picked all his apostles. If not for Paul i would be lost...!!!

@@davegreene1198 did you read what i said... Jesus picked the first 12 and although Judas Iscariot died and the apostles threw lots for their 12th pick he still was not chosen by CHRIST period... The word is very specific and nuanced and it takes discernment and meditation/revelation to open up said nuances... The apostles cast lots lol... I would humbly suggest that we consider lots to mean they really had no IDEA whom to chose and thusly they CAST LOTS... Jesus picked Saul to replace Judas and took him on a 3 year journey/discipleship just like the others...

If it were not for Christ choosing the apostle Paul we would be lost we owe him a great deal of love and understanding so many Christians think he's not worthy or even believe what he says they don't even think he should be in the Bible which is ridiculous he had a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ then even the 12 apostles think about that he was one on one with Christ for 3 years in the desert that's amazing how how intimate is that!!
Thank you for pointing out that subtle distinction. Jesus does not talk about the grace of God ever! He talks about mercy and that God will show mercy to those that show mercy to the living portion of his creation including fellow humans and follow the instructions God gave through Moses as validated by the prophets.
Jesus is bumper sticker was "repent for the kingdom of heaven is near." Meaning stop sinning, God is very close! In modern English, he might say "God doesn't care what you did yesterday he only cares about what you intend to do today and tomorrow." Jesus is pretty clear God does not want or need you to sacrifice anything including an animal or human being in order to gain salvation. For Jesus tells us the path to salvation is easy to find but hard to follow. The first step is to follow the instructions of Moses that are not invalidated by the teachings of any two or more of the prophets to the letter. The second step is to forgive each and every person that God sends to teach you a hard lesson or to test your faith in God.
While the path is narrow if you take these two steps your soul will find itself at the right door to God's throne room when your body dies, the one that leads to eternal life. Any step to the left or the right will take you to a different door which does not take anyone's soul to hell only to death.
