Mark Menzies: is UK politics full of scandal?

  • This week on The Political Fourcast, another scandal hits the Tories - Mark Menzies MP loses the whip as the Conservative Party investigates claims that he misused campaign funds. He allegedly made a late night call to ask for money to pay off "bad people". He disputes the allegations and senior Tory MPs are telling voters not to rush to judgement. With upcoming local elections and a looming general election, the allegations risk damaging the party in government.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
But is today’s story just another example in a long line of MPs from all parties flouting the rules?
Since 2019, there have been at least 10 cases of Conservative MPs that have either been suspended or quit over allegations of misconduct. Similarly, across the same time period, there have been at least four Labour MPs accused of misconduct, along with one from the SNP and one from Plaid Cymru.
This week, we speak to the SNP’s deputy leader in the Commons Mhairi Black, who’s announced she will stand down at the next election. And former Education Secretary Justine Greening, who had the Tory whip withdrawn after opposing Boris Johnson over Brexit in 2019. They talk to us about mistrust in politics, and why this “jaw dropping” scandal could be a “plague” on politics at large, and confirm what voters think of Westminster’s politicians.
Produced by Silvia Maresca, Shaheen Sattar, Rob Thomson, Calum Fraser, Nick Jackson.

I'm not kidding when I say that the market crash and high inflation have me really stressed out and worried about retirement. I can’t focus on the long run when I should be retiring in 3years, you see I’ve got good companies in my portfolio and a good amount invested, but my profit has been stalling, does it mean this recession/unstable market doesn’t provide any calculated risk opportunities to make profit?

Twice, very publicly on Sky News and the BBC, Mark Menzies has been asked what his allegations against Angela Ranger are. On both occasions he blustered and obfuscated and ultimately refused to say what they were, falsely claiming he couldn't due to a 'live police investigation'. The real reason is because he knows his allegations are false and he'd be laying himself wide open to a prosecution for slander by Rayner if he was to state them publicly. Something he cannot afford, particularly as he's going to lose his seat in the upcoming general election.

This, unbelievably, isn’t the worst bit…
A Tory MP was quizzed by police over allegations he got a dog drunk and had a brawl with a friend.
Mark Menzies, who represents the Lancashire constituency of Fylde, was accused of locking himself in his friend’s house, drunkenly feeding the dog alcohol and then starting a booze-fuelled brawl when the friend confronted him about it.
Mr Menzies was interviewed by police but not charged, and strongly denies any wrongdoing.
The incident took place in August 2015, with the homeowner reportedly calling police from a neighbour’s house after the fight spilled out on to the street.
The two men, who according to the Daily Mirror been drinking all day, each told police that the other had attacked them.
Documents seen by the paper show an emergency vet’s bill of nearly £500 for treating the dog for “intoxication” and “poisoning”.
Mr Menzies claims the police dropped their investigation after he showed them pictures of his friend plying the dog with alcoholic drinks.

@@Lynnefromlyn we will never know how many perverts there are/ were in westminster after theresa may deleted the file. fewer wrong doers???? labour actively ignored the many many reports about their child rape squad grooming gang perverts. those hundreds of gang rapists bumps labour right up the SLEAZE indicator, and should we stay quiet about labour having the most MPs sent to prison? the tories are scum, labour are worse.

Jesus wept what a mess, problem is (me speaking as a lifelong Socialist) is terrified of the prospect Starmer represents, a typica; One Nation Conservative by ANY definition offering zero political change and the fact he has been radicalised by Zionism being anywhere Britain's policies for the Middle East. Apart from his still appalling record on Gaza, he is the only Labour leader to suspend Jews who disagree with Netenyahu.

Really? When every action has been covered including his justifications for breaking Party rules. in various media He describes himself as 'A Zionist without Qualification', he refused to release his backers during the election and only revealed afterwards he is supported by backers linked directly to Israeli promotional enterprises, not to mention millionaires who made their wealth under Apartheid South Africa. There are dozens of Court cases still in the offing from suspended left leaning Jews. Scuppering the SNP day motion was one of the lowest acts in recent political history - it would be easy to go on.
Here's a bit of education for your childish accusations. Socialism is a movement, not a product of the Labour Party, sometimes the two align and we have get the post war Labour Government - many times it does not and very feeble brains find that difficult to understand.
